Recon 1, in MagnaCut

Finally, a Recon 1 with an uncoated blade. Almost my ideal Recon 1. I'm already curious to hear some initial reviews.
I got the coated version. good knife. can't imagine this will be much different other than missing the coating.....

Got one finally. I was waiting for a better price and hoping on spear point but got tired of waiting. Paid $160 from the outdoors site that takes 45 days to ship. At double the price of the Taiwanese version it still isn't close to worth it, but realistically it's not a bad knife or horrible price if you ignore the comparison.

The coating isn't Taiwan dlc level but certainly better than the paint that would flake off looking at it like the older Cold Steels had (though those were nice to strip as a result). Definitely rougher action as well (I have the Taiwan one on pb washers also).

The clip is set just off the g10 and that's been enough that it works in every pair of pants or shorts I've tried without needing to adjust the tension, so that's nicer.

The blade stop pin I think has a collar on it, and that rattles when closed. It's just a little bit, but it's pretty annoying still. Looks like it's a bit too short. I haven't taken it apart yet or tried playing with the pivot, so maybe just pressing it tighter will do the trick. Anyone else have this and fixed it? Figure if pressing the scales tighter ruins the action I'll just throw some goopy lube on it instead.

Overall not bad. Probably pick up a spear point still if that ever comes out.

Rainy day so the dog won't get out of bed and I get to play dog bed, so here's the pic tax plus dog and feet pics as a bonus

Nice looking dogs . All three ! ;)

If I ever do get a Magnacut version , probably opt for uncoated . Have to really drop in price .

We're out!

You can see the coating wearing already just from the g10. Taiwan would never

I got fooled a few times by markings on the old type DLC .

What I thought was wear , was really just softer material deposited on the coating .

Came off with proper cleaning .

IDK about this newer coating .

blade stop pin rattling around, in the past it was suggested ya take it apart and put some grease in there..not gobs, but just enough to not let it rattle back and forth. I've near tried anything else but I imagine with some creativity you could figure out something. bit of teflon tape or something like that would work also. Just make sure the pin is seated in both scales whatever ya use.

Gave it a scrub just to be sure but yeah the g10 wore away the coating there.

The tang is also quite worn from opening it maybe a hundred or two times, not a ridiculous amount but also certainly more than a handful.

I have Recon1 tanto in S35VN and I use it.
I lost it... so I bought S35VN Recon1 spear point.
I found the tanto 2 days later...

For some reason I wanted yet another Recon1. And I did see clip point Recon M1 (MagnaCut) at the store. It costs around 260€ and I wasn't impressed at all.

Magnacut version had these issues:
1. Gritty opening
2. Offcentered blade
3. Offcentered lockbar (gap on one side)
3. Uneven grinds (primary and secondary)

It was by no means worth the price.

So I found new old stock of XHP model and got it for less than half the price.

I like that Cold Steel utilized MagnaCut .

Not happy at all with downgraded coating .

I don't mind a good durable DLC , but most others look bad with much use . Just as soon have no coating .
I wonder if they needed a lower temperature coating so as to not damage the heat treat? Or maybe the factory just can't do a proper DLC coating?

It's not DLC. It's a(nother) type of PVD coating

Edit: I might have misunderstood you if you were asking about why they aren't using dlc. I don't think I've seen an Italian knife with dlc, not sure why

Yep, not DLC. I knew that, but didn't make myself clear. The more I think about it, the more I think the Italians just don't do DLC.

May have found the reason for gritty action E EatingSarma

Popped mine open today figuring it would be broken in enough that I'd take a loaded felt wheel to polish up all the contact points and get it loctited back together, and it'd been good to go.

Well, I couldn't see them looking in that there are actually Teflon washers in there. Being a CS I should've expected I guess, but I really couldn't see them. One side had a Teflon washer and two paper thin pb washers, while the other side only had the Teflon and a single pb. The pb ones are crazy thin, dished, scratched, and you can see they got pinched by the pivot being put together. The Teflon aren't in much better shape; one the center had totally ripped off, and it's outer edge had partially frayed. Overall...not very pretty. The one good thing I'll say is it's nice they use a wide radius washer so the blade rides on more material.

I replaced them with the spares I put in all my CSes (dimensions in one of the pics). Feels a million times better even not broken in, but to be fair I also cleaned it so who knows.

Washers it came with, how they look first opening (and by the way I had to break the loctited to open it, so it was exactly at factory tightness):

Another where you can see the piece of Teflon washer that separated and stayed on the pivot:

With the replacements, only need one per side (and the missing Teflon washer center taken off the pivot):

Curiously only one of three clip screws had loctite. It was the lowest, so maybe there's a reason:

Shot of the inside of the handles, for reference:

Another thing, it wasn't the stop pin rattling. That is stepped and doesn't have a separate collar as I thought. Both pins were stuck in there pretty tight so it must not have been those rattling. I'm guessing it's one of the other smaller body pins. Lazily I just threw grease on the ends of everything, and it seems okay.

Great work man! But the thing is - I don't want to pay a fortune for a knife in which I have to invest that much effort to make it work properly...

three folks here have reported on them so far that I remember. all three were gritty. think TheFactor TheFactor took his apart and cleaned. maybe polished washers and he lubed it, solved it. ill let him tell it properly. as im going by memory.

I just oiled mine..still tad gritty, but I didn't care enough to take apart and work on it. you solved yours replacing washers.

the Taiwan made ones just seem better overall, so far anyways.
