GSOM, I'm sure I'd love D, but can't buy it in a store. I've only seen it in a line-up once.

Yeah, but it's Surgical Stainless, for surgeries and stuff.

Yes. Always use stainless maple syrup for surgeries.

Jim - they're teasing about the stainless, you can go back to your happy place now.
repeat after me: Goose-frah-bah.......
OTOH, grade d maple syrup sounds good.

D is cooking grade, I think-got a gallon of that two years ago. Good stuff. We used to do our own each spring (not a lot, but enough for the family) but it just got silly after a while.

yeah - I helped a buddy make maple syrup in his kitchen one year in a big roaster pan. every time it got low we'd add more sap.
house smelled awesome, but it took 3 days to make 1/2 gallon of syrup.

In defense of 440A, Kabar/Cutco's 440A is pretty darn stellar. Kinda brittle, but does take and keep a pretty excellent edge.

Agree,

my son has been whittling with the BK13 Ethan gave me. Its been a few months and gone through quite a few sticks and still has a wicked sharp edge.

I thought the BK-21 was gonna be quenched in Maple Syrup during the heat treat process?

indeed, I believe we confirmed that earlier. The important detail is that the more concentrated grades of Maple Syrup must be pre-heated to achieve the right thermal viscosity. You can quench in 'A' without pre-heat, but don't expect a hamon.

Yeah-no problem with it for smaller stuff-especially neckers. I hafta send neck knives out to be cerakoted-just don't want to deal with ht'ing stainless.

I left a pot of sap boiling on the porch and forgot about it-had to bead blast the inside of the pot to get the crud out.
That would be a combination quench/traction coating lol

I hear that in the northeast all you guys have to do is tap on any tree and maple syrup comes out. Where I live in Texas, when you tap on a tree all that comes out is bees and fire ants.

I remember a guy using a fire ant nest for cover at JRTC lol.
Last night it was cold enough that I could hear trees exploding up in the woods, so no sap-just "sapnel"
