Or just stick the spile in and threaten it with an RBK. Last year the our kids' grade school had a "sap drive" - they asked every one with a maple tree in their yard to let them tap it, in return for which they'd get paid back in a percentage of the syrup produced. The result was that all over town there were 5 gallon Homer buckets sitting next to a LOT of the city's maples. The kids collected the sap, boiled it down, paid back the tree owners and sold the rest for $ for school. Granite state fundraising at it's finest.
 
Awesome. Depending on the conditions and species, it takes about 40 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup. I sometimes use the sap in my meadmaking (instead of water).
 
I have used it for brewing beer-really good with stouts and brown ales.
Didn't hafta add much barley malt for keg conditioning.

I've been meaning to. Hopefully this year will be the year. I actually sent a bottle of mead to one of those gatherings with dresnor a year or two ago....

That's what happens when you're standing in the lobby waiting. The talk naturally turns to maple syrup. This thread is like the waiting room. Like OKB just invited us in here and said "wait here just a minute" and for the last hour we've been talking about maple syrup and suddenly I realize that I'm still waiting.......and I'm starting to feel like that "minute" is going to turn into months, but I am keeping my place in line even if we have to talk about every damn detail of maple syrup and making maple syrup and the minutiae of good spile placement.

Does anyone actually OWN one of these things yet?

Please........someone....anyone...for the love of God, just post up a picture!

That's what kool-aid does/did to me, too. Seriously, what were we supposed to think? A giant glass pitcher with legs smashing through walls to bring kids his refreshing, artificially fruit flavored beverages? It's like adults wanted us to be tripping. No wonder I never trusted Goofy Grape.....

Don't even get me started on Pixi-Stix. That's like crack Kool-Aid.

I heard that the boat from China with the sheaths that we are going to throw away anyways ran out of gas or got hijacked by Somali pirates or something like that.

I think the Somalis jacked the boat and then it ran out of gas while they were joyriding it. And also, aliens.
