Or just stick the spile in and threaten it with an RBK. Last year the our kids' grade school had a "sap drive" - they asked every one with a maple tree in their yard to let them tap it, in return for which they'd get paid back in a percentage of the syrup produced. The result was that all over town there were 5 gallon Homer buckets sitting next to a LOT of the city's maples. The kids collected the sap, boiled it down, paid back the tree owners and sold the rest for $ for school. Granite state fundraising at it's finest.That stuff is hideous even if your only option is the questionably-organic stuff from Safeway. But every once in a while I get a small bottle imported from the NE from a local gourmet market, just because it's so much better. The bottles are so small I only need a home-depot-bucket full of cash!
Don't suck it out of the trees - just squeeze 'em real hard!
