REK Ember fixed blade discussion thread

Thanks for following along guys!

Next up I finished out the grind, flats, and edge 100% so I can get it taped off before glue up

What I do next is tape the blade, then install the scales and trim the tape right where everything connects... makes any epoxy removal WAY easier after it's dry

Next I tape off the blade w/ some blasting mask and blast the tang for proper adhesion

Then comes the time to permanently attach

Thanks letting us follow along! I'm learning a lot from your posts. Can I ask how you scribe your grind height line?? Also, is that just 3M blue painters tape on the blade? It's so smooth it almost looks like teflon tape.

Sure! I always following other knife maker's WIP work so figured why not?!

I use a height gage scribe that has a carbide tip... I got mine from grizzly years ago but they don't sell it any more so you would have to look elsewhere.

The tape is amazing, it doesn't leave hardly any residue and is super easy to cut. I get it from the company who sells Cerakote, but it is expensive!

Hmmm…. I have a height gauge (from Grizzly actually, lol) that I use for scribing the centerline on blades and scales…. But I’m having trouble picturing how you use it to scribe the grind height. Does it have a tip that you can point downwards so you can follow the curve of the blade?

I’m going to have to look into that tape! I left some painters tape on a blank for about six hours and ended up with a little discoloration.

Ahh sorry I misread your post! For the grind height I've got a carbide scribe that has a roller in one side (looks almost like calipers). I'll email you a link if I can find it, was cheap on Amazon

Hey Josh, are you still thinking about doing scale liners or thicker scales for the large Embers?
If so I'm in.
