Request for newbie primer and recommendations.

double cut or DC is a bead blast finish, 'double' because it is blasted twice with two different sizes of media.

Sar 8's have only been released as Limited and Special editions. Many have been waiting for a Combat Grade CG with a reduced cost coated blade. Awesome knife though, just beat on it some to take the shiny down a notch. :D

Double cut is a bead blasted finish - it's blasted with two different types of media, hence double cut. It's nonreflective but still bare metal.

Unfortunately, there have been no coated versions of the SAR8. Many of us have been asking Jerry to produce a coated combat grade SAR8, but so far he has not answered our call. Considering the fact there was no CG version of the knife's smaller 4" brother, I am doubtful that he will ever produce a CG version, which is a shame.

Thank you, Viking. The SAR-8 really does have a special appeal to me as an all-purpose knife and as a "looker." The red handle is particularly pretty; I can see why it's sold out at the Company Store.

Speaking of which: what is the difference between the BusseCombat website and the BusseCompanyStore website? Why do they list different models, with no overlap?

Bussecombat.com has knives available for order. They are produced to order, so there is a wait time of several weeks to a month or so to get your knife.

The Company Store has fixed stock of knives that were already produced. The store is run separately from the main Busse company, so it's sort of like the official dealer for Busse knives. The company store ships knives much faster, since they are already on hand, and it often ends up with special runs of knives that aren't available anywhere else.

Aaaah, I see. So what knives are currently available for individual order direction from BusseCombat? Only those pictured on that site? Has the SAR-8 come and gone, as far as active production goes?

The direct offers from bussecombat are only the two on that site - the bwbm and boss street. The sar 8 never saw sales through the bussecombat.com site - batches of various handle materials have been produced and sent to the company store with little warning until they are offered for sale. No one except the Busse crew know whether there will be any more, and they rarely let us in on the secret. You just have to wait and see.

Well that's just cruel. But duly noted. It's an interesting strategy.

I think I just about have my questions answered at this point. Thanks to everyone who contributed. Oh, one last one! What is meant by the term "magnum handle?"

The secondary market seems to be where you'll find the best selection of knives for your ideal configuration.

You might be in luck due to the economic standstill right now, there are many affordable opportunities floating around on new, unused Busses.

Just do a little homework before commiting to any of the exchange offerings and you will be very pleased once you find the right one:thumbup:

Thank you, Strabs. There's one of the red-handled SAR-8s in a thread in this same forum. Very jealousy-inducing. I'm getting more interested in that knife by the minute.

Mag handles are thicker slabs and sometimes more sculpted. Since my first mags, that's all I want, but it's personal preference. Some blades have the option, some just have one or the other.

And the term "mags" is poorly defined - for example, the handles on the Bushwacker are called "mags", but in hand they feel thinner than some "standard" handles on other knives I own. So it's hard to judge until you actually have them in hand.

if you can find one the 3b2 ia a great all arounder. solid grip, nice size blade for some chopping, baton's well, and is fast in the hand. it's light enogh to be carried all day, but will still take a serious beating.

That is very nice. I wonder what the significance of the name is. "3b2."

i don't know what it mean's. some have said it is the acronym for the group that ordered the batch of knives, that's all i know.

sar8+boss street. the sar8 is really good for battoning and it does better as a "machete" then the ultra-heavy choppers in the same length. You'd have to have the custom shop square off the pommel to use it for hammering (never understood having such a massively wide *rounded* pommel). the boss street is an almost sheeple friendly compact knife package that will do everything you need without having a GIANT choil to hang up on stuff. more expensive then a one knife does all, but you'll get more out of a 2 knife package if you do a lot of wood work or camping.

I could be full of hooey though :foot:

That's a good point, Canary. Ultimately, a two-knife solution will be best. I like your recommendation, there. One knife at a time, though, and I have some passable small blades to accompany the big one. I just don't have the big one...

If you're carrying a big blade as a tank of a beater, I would also consider going smaller, lighter, and thinner than the BOSS street for your belt knife, for better slicing and detail work. The thin versions of the Active Duty, Meaner Street, etc are reasonably easily available, as is the High Street, which is a pretty handy small knife... also consider stuff like the cultellus, game warden, etc...

After you've got your chopper, that is  :D

what am I talking about.... TANK BUSTER!!!

next to a batac (badger attach w/ tactical handle) and to the right a nmsfno (nuclear meltdown (treatment) fusion handled natural outlaw)

the tank buster in these photo's has these options:
jungle green coat
standard black micarta scales
no choil
no swedge

i don't know if it 's been said, but for the price the bwbm is a awesome chopper and is fast. if you back it up with a cuti or bad, you have a very nice survival combo.

(those two type faster than i do.)
