Or, if you want something more slim, with good reach, look for a Satin Jack. It is my favorite Busse ever..

They also have the red and black G10 back in stock, I see. That begs another question. How do the various handle materials compare, in terms of feel and durability? G10, paper micarta, canvas micarta, linen micarta...

P.S., in a six inch blade, the Satin Jack is absolutely slick.

IMHO, canvas micarta feels the best, and is the best blend of durability-to-weight. G10 is very durable, but heavy. Paper micarta is pretty, but I had some (non-Busse) paper micarta 1911 grips that weren't durable enough for me. (They deformed at the grip screw holes.)

Well, this is definitely a duty knife, a survival knife. Meant to be, anyway. Anyone else have an opinion on the matter? The more I think about it, the more the SAR-8 seems like the one I want more than any other. Red or Black. Red G10 or Black Paper. I don't mind it being pretty (hell, love it pretty) but I want a knife I never have to worry about breaking. Ever.

Ok, I don't mean to be a thread bumper, but you people need to help me out here. Note the time stamps and understand that I've spent the entire interim flipping between the black paper SAR-8, the G10 editions, and gnuCash (my financial tracker), and freaking out. You all are responsible for this; you need to help me make a decision here. Am I missing out on durability with the black paper micarta? How likely am I to find these knives in a few months time? Is it likely that even more favorable combinations will be forthcoming in the future?

This is making me miserable.

You will not regret getting the satin and black paper!! The full convex is highly worth it.

If these are anything like the Game Wardens were (but better) they will be scarce, especially once the SEs are all gone and only CGs are available.

just a thought, you can get a bwbm and a boss street for about a 100. more than what a sar8 will cost you and that is two knives for the price of one and you would be hard pressed to find something that either of the two could not handle easily.

Thank you, Strick. I appreciate a voice of sanity every now and again. That said, I'm pretty certain of my desire for the SAR-8. Similar to how I felt when I laid eyes on the Emerson CQC-11 (another knife design for which I seem to be the only one with an appreciation). I'm convinced this is the right one. I just want to know if I would be sacrificing significant reliability with the paper handles.

In the future, if I get multiple Busses (which I may, when I have the resources to store and transport multiples of things) I will probably add a pair similar to your description. Maybe a Steel Heart and a Satin Jack.

For now, though, this is the one I want. It's dead on. And given its scarcity, I'll probably go ahead and bite the bullet. I just have to make the handle decision.

man, i would not be terribly concerned with handles, you can't always go by looks when you are using the knife, the black paper is a little more grippy than the g10 to me. but that is just me and it boils down to personal touch and feel, you will not be sorry at all, for either choice that you make.

the sar8 is an excellent knife and i would love to have one, but it is a little rich for the blood at the moment, that is the reason why several of us are screaming for a cg version, and i am holding out for the bwbm as well, i want one of them thin ones!!!

Here is my opinion on handle material for what it's worth. I have a g-10 version and love it. I had an LE SAR8 but traded it because I really don't care if it has a number or not. Black paper is a perfect blend of comfort and durability IMO. It does chip but that's only if you hit the handle, and I don't do that . . . ever. You also save $20 getting black paper and it looks sooooo nice. That's my vote. You don't sacrifice enough in durability from g-10 to be worth the sacrifice in comfort and price. Go for it you will love it.:D:thumbup:

Buy it! You know you want to! :D

See? We are here to help. :D

btw, don't stress over the scale material. If you ever managed to damage it, Busse will cover it, no question.

ancient, ahhh yes the cqc11, utcom at its best, go the super commander now--man you neeeeeeeeeeeeed to go to blade all the happys of the happiest of the blade world are there, got to meet a bunch of the knife company owners there, it is seaworld, epcot disney world and a partridge in a pear tree to us---knife enthusiasts.

back on topic---what rg,oeser and i said-----have a big time and enjoy your busse

Woo! Saved! The black paper edition sold out while I was at my movie, saving me the trouble of purchasing it. Thank you, though, I've gotten some good information out of this. Now I have a good sense of what I want. I'll be able to jump on it when my bank account is ready.

Ancient, I'm gonna give you a good piece of advice while no one's listening...

RUN!!!! And don't look back!! :D

I wandered in here looking for the same type of knife as you described in Post#1 back in '06. Now, a little over 3 years & 3 months later, I'm still here, still buying Busse's... Of all sizes!! They are addictive, low maintenance, and a heckuva lot of fun to use...but they WILL drain your wallet and YOU TOO will become another Kool-Aid drinkin' HOG like the rest of us! ;)

Because, for all you know, in about 3 years you might be saying the very same thing in a new thread similar to this one! ...Oh yeah, Get the Bushwhacker Mistress & SAR-8 while the gettin' is good. :) What can I say...I'm an enabler!!:p

...Now I'm not sayin' that this is a trap; These knives live up to any hype that ya may have heard about 'em, But don't say you weren't warned!

Good Hunting! :D

Yes, I can see how it could easily get to that point, Jaxx. I'm not worried, though, as my shopping list is extremely specific. For now, there are only a finite number of slots, and only one item fits in each slot. Survival knife (SAR-8 SE), big game rifle (CZ 550, .375 H&H Magnum), carbine (Remington ACR), new computer (*classified*), new trailer to store it all in... One thing at a time, one item per role. Once the list is completely filledd, then I can come back around and buy Bonus Busses--if they can fit in alongside all the other bonus items I'll have built up a desire for by then.

For now, I am content to lie in wait for another black-scaled SAR-8 SE. That's the one, methinks. That's the one.

Hmmm, well, we've had SAR-8's offered in black G-10, black canvas micarta and black paper micarta already...I think that's it for black.

(Don't look now, but...there's a black paper micarta SAR-8 calling your name over at the Store right now! ;) ...No, seriously...there's one or two back in stock. :))

Whichever Busse you do grab, I think that you'll really like it!

Oh, for G-d's sake. Fine. I'll order the darned thing and eat bread and water for the next three months. Jaxx, I hold you responsible. You and the rest of these filthy pigs. At least this way, I can cross it off the list.
