Request for newbie primer and recommendations.

Oh, for G-d's sake. Fine. I'll order the darned thing and eat bread and water for the next three months. Jaxx, I hold you responsible. You and the rest of these filthy pigs. At least this way, I can cross it off the list.

;) No worries, many here hold me responsible, so I'm cool with that. Welcome to the madness! :D ...Oh yeah... Not pigs. HOGS!! :p:)

Done and done. You horrible people. I'm going to bed. I have to fly tomorrow.

Have a safe trip, and I hope your flight is smooth.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the ASH-1. Seems like it fits the desired specs pretty well.

Here's a Custom shop version:

He pulled the trigger on a SAR-8, so sure, let's show him all the other Busse's he should have!!

Black paper SAR-8, eh?

Man, it would have been tough to forego the blue/black (my fav) scales, but man, the red/black look great, too.

It's true, I'm not going to be buying another Busse any time soon, unless it should happen that I'm totally disappointed in my purchase (Likely?). However, further recommendations are all well and good, so that I'm prepared when that time comes. A few years down the road, I'll know my final flight kit limitations, and I'll probably buy a knife for that, too. And maybe a light/heavy pair for a dedicated "long walk" kit. In other words, while I only buy one item per slot, as life goes on, new slots appear, and if this Busse thing proves to be all it's cracked up to be, then I'll know exactly where to go to fill those slots.

I'm a student Naval aviator. In training, our gear is provided for us per our training aircraft, and there's no point in customizing it, because we'll just be in a new aircraft a year later as we advance through stages of training. When we get to the "fleet," though, and get into our final aircraft for real and true, then it's worthwhile to replace some of the stock, issue bits with sturdier, hand-picked stuff. For instance, right now our survival gear has a very beefy Gerber spring-open folding "tanto." It's great for training flights over the Texas coast, but over Afghanistan, with a true extended survival situation waiting for me below if something goes wrong, I'd rather have a fixed blade survival knife. They'll likely issue me one, but it likely won't be anything like a Busse. It won't be until then, though, that I know what the acceptable weight and dimensions are for a replacement knife. In the meantime, I'm just shopping for a personal hunting/backpacking/oh-crap-stuck-on-a-mountain-and-my-truck-died knife.

Well, if that SAR-8 isn't quite to your liking, then there's always the tried & true SFNO (SFNO LE shown in Guyon's post further down the thread).
...
The ASH-1 is another good choice and it was produced in various thicknesses from the Skinny version @ .187" thick to the CG version @ .32" thick, with the LE version falling in between @ .22" thick...
CG ASH-1's shown in Jungle green with black G-10 & black/tan G-10 handles

Here's a size comparison pic of a few mentioned on this thread:

From left to right...
a stripped CG Satin Jack TAC
a Satin Jack TAC, LE version
a full height ground SFNO
ASH-1 CG
and a Fusion Battle Mistress LE version (not the Bushwhacker)

...But I still think that you'll like that SAR-8. It's a whole lotta knife for its size & weight. :)

SAR-8 LE (same specs as your SAR-8 w/BP micarta):

Yeah, barring the unexpected, the SAR-8's gonna be perfect for my size and temperament. But the shorter blades like the Satin Jack and Natural Outlaw will probably be perfect for a flight survival knife, come the day. I'm looking forward to receiving the SAR-8 and seeing what all the Busse commotion is about.

If it turns out you like the feel of the SAR-8, and want a shorter version for your flight kit, you can always consider the SAR-4. Some of which also came in black paper.

They did??? How did I miss that? :grumpy: Anyone got a pic of a SAR-4 in BP?

Since you are in the service, you might consider calling the Shop and talking with Jerry or Garth. They make many knives for service units, designs that are seldom even shown to the public. Who knows, maybe they have already designed a knife for your need.

Thank you for the tip, Resin. Maybe once I'm further along. In the meantime, this does touch on another questin which has been brewing: is there a map somewhere of all the names, the people, associated with Mr. Busse and his knives, and their jobs? Someone draw me a diagram!
