Rick Hinderer XM-18..Looking for a Review

You know I think those Sebenza vs. whatever thread could be annoying, but I would like to know the fit and finish of the XM-18 compared to the Sebbie. Everyone compares top knives the the Sebbie for a reason I guess.

If Ricks Firetacs are any indication then the F/F is about the same. As in excellent.

Thanks for the helpful hints on quotes! Dont know why I didnt just try that before:thumbup:....hmmm still dosnt look like it worked for me though.

I'm considering going with a flipper. I definately like the looks of them and like the functionality of easy opening and as a finger guard, but I havent decided on that one yet. I still have some time to think about it and Rick assured me I could change my mind about any design features before the knife was completed. Is that cool or what:D

Thanks all

I think while deleting parts of the quote you also deleted the word quote which is in brackets. Hit any quote button and you'll see the word "quote" in brackets before and after the phrase to be quoted. You don't want to delete these tags. This sounds as clear as mud, just hit quote on this post and you'll see. You can preview your posts prior to submitting also.

The flipper vs a wave vs something else is my main issue. Do you know if his flipper opens the blade 100% or is it an assist. I worry that the flipper will get hung up in my pocket plus I don't really like the look. If it opens it 100% then I might consider a flipper. I hope to get to BLADE mainly to talk to him and handle one of his knives.

Ahhh...Now I get it. Thanks

I actually did ask Rick about the flipper. I have been considering it but I not sure about it for many of the reasons you pointed out. I too was worried about it getting hung up in my pocket. No, it does not deploy the blade 100%,
there are no springs or any assist in Ricks knives, the flipper is simply a means to help in opening the knife faster. I'm still debating on the flipper, I suspect I will probably go without it, I like the looks of it, but dont really think its necessary to my needs(superfast opening)

Thanks

I have two of his Flames and both are flippers...Yes his flippers open the knife 100% But it is still a manual operation in a sense that you are manipulating the flipper (with you index finger etc.) and not the action of pulling it out of your pocket like a waved blade. They are two different things. Ricks flippers are very smooth and fast, once you know how to use them properly (which is easy) it is second nature.

I can see how the flipper may get in the way while in the pocket, but this has not been a problem for me. But then again I don't ever put anything else in the pocket I carry my knife in, so I am never fishing around for anything in that pocket. When I do get an XM-18 it will be hard to decide if it will be a flipper or not...most likely not as both my Flames are flippers and the XM-18 is for the most part a beefed up heavy duty Flame.

Rick's knives just rock! It will be a bit of time before I save up the money for one, but I can't wait til the day comes. Awesome!

Crashlander,

Thanks for that picture......Oh man, I cant wait till I get my order I placed with Rick! I chose the tumbled handle and satin blade as well so this pic should be pretty close to what I'm getting.  :D

I just placed on order for an XM-18. Rick is a great guy. Even with Blade approaching, he answered an email and took the time to speak with me on the phone. I ordered the green handle, for now, but would love to see it first. If anyone has an XM-18, in any color, lets post um!!!

It looks like I will be picking up a 3 1/2 inch bladed, orange handled XM-18 at Blade. I STILL want a lime green, 3 inch bladed XM-18.

Congrats, Thats gonna be one sweet knife, I really like the orange color g-10. I ordered the black g-10, but thinking I may change it to the blue/black as I am liking that to. Does it have a flipper, blade shape, whats the finish on the blade and Ti Lock side? PLEASE post some pics and give us a review after you get home with it as it will still be some time after Blade until I get my order and I need more pics of these to drool over.:D Have fun at Blade!

TKC you say the blade is 3 1/2 inches on the orange XM-18 your buying, does he offer a 3 inch blade or is this just wishful thinking for now?

Congrats:thumbup: I cant wait to get mine! I would like to see the green g-10 as well, I went with black. I am still debating on what g-10 color I will end up finally choosing though as Rick said I still have time to think about it before he gets started on my order. Is that cool or what!

I dunno anything about my XM-18, as I am picking it up at Blade. All I know is that it has 3 1/2 inch blade and has orange G-10.

What do you mean by blue/black. Is that an inlay as he has shown with the flame gen knives OR something else?

Something else, I believe the first pick of the XM-18, with the combo blade, on Ricks website has the blue/black g-10. I asked him about it because I wondered also. Rick said the blue/black g-10 as well as the green/black is alternating layers of g-10 colors, thin line of blue, thin line of black, and so on. So as Rick puts the texture in the g-10 you get some of the blue showing and some of the black showing. If you look real close at the photo on the website of that first pic, you can see the alternating colors in the g-10 in the edge of the g-10. Pretty cool huh!

TKC, I'm sure no matter what blade style, finish etc. that orange handled XM-18 has it will be one sweet knife!

Offhand does anyone know if Rick changes the size of the handles if you get a smaller blade (like a 3" vs 3.5")? Or is the handle the same size and just the blade is different. Also, how long is the handle on any of these??

Going from Rick's posts on his forum on another site. He is currently working on a batch of 3 inch XM-18's and also some XM-18's with his Helfire blade (tanto). He may even have some with a with a 4 inch blade in the works.

Well that didn’t occur to me nor did I notice it.

It would be interesting to see him do a knife similar to D. B. Fraley with the torched titanium on one side and the G10 on the other.
