Rick Hinderer XM-18..Looking for a Review

Thanks for the measurements rosconey2 and congrats on your purchase...I tried to get an email in on that one, I wanted it as well but you were up much to early that day for me to get in on that one before you did:D Well, thats what I get for being lazy:yawn: :D

Anybody got a phone number for Rick? He rarely answers emails so I don't know if I've got an order in or not and he doesn't list a phone number on his site. This has caused me to give up on him in the past.

Going from Rick's posts on his forum on another site. He is currently working on a batch of 3 inch XM-18's and also some XM-18's with his Helfire blade (tanto). He may even have some with a with a 4 inch blade in the works.

Where does he host his own forum? I'd like to visit it. Thanks.

I love his work he just needs to work on his communication skills before he alienates his customers. It sucks to not know if you've even got an order in or not. And no phone number listed on the website would usually be a sign to steer clear of them. Especially when they don't answer the only form of communication they have listed. (email)

Most likely the green forum. Which severly limits his exposure.

Oops, sorry guys!...the past few weeks have been very hectic with Blade.the past week its been dealing with the bad midwest storms and no power....with the emails piling up it has been taking me awhile to respond. But please, if I dont email you back please email me again.I have been getting on average 15 20 emails a day,and with my bad typing skills it takes forever to get everyone responded too. haha...
I also have a forum at the ck&g forum...I try to balance my time on the computer with actually making knives in my shop..sometimes it can be tough!..But, thanks guys for having patiance with me!

Rick

Rick

Which forum is that as I'm unfamiliar with the initials? Thanks for the reply Rick, like I said, your stuff is top notch you're just a hard guy to get ahold of. Please notice I changed my order to an XM-18 but would like to see what shade of green G10 you're offering.

Thanks Rick,

Greg McKean

Rick is a "newer" maker.

He is beloved on the "Green Forum"

He makes, IMHO, a very highly upgraded version of the Strider framelock knives, and is to be commended for the creation of the Hinderer Stabilizer. How ANY of you can accept G10 on one side of a knife, and slab titanium on the other for love of God or country is beyond me.

KnifeCollector, Lime Green is for Jello, not knives, maybe you should change your BF name to JelloLover.:D

1. It is up to YOU all to keep the pressure on Rick. If you let him slide on communications or delivery times NOW, think of how bad it can be years from now, and you will have no one to blame but yourselves.

2. If anyone has experiences with Rick not keeping his word, you should be sharing it with eachother, and making sure he is accountable for it.

Rick could have a great, and prolific career ahead of him, or he could be the next Brad Duncan, and the collector's and users of his work will play a great factor in how it all turns out.

Best Regards,

STeven,
Don't hold back -- let us know how you really feel. ;)

Some folks seem to like that combination of G10 on one side and slab Ti on the other. :D Then again, some people like G10 on both sides and some others like Ti on both sides. Heck, there's one or two folks running around these forums that even like animal parts on both sides.

I don't think anyone has ever had trust issues with Rick, I know I haven't. And I always looked at his work like upgraded Sebenzas personally.

Yeah, really let us know how you feel about G10 and Ti. I happen to like the combination as it is, at least for me, easier to hold on to. I really don't think Rick is that bad at communication. I have had E-Mail conversations with a number of other custom builders in the past and he is at least in the middle of the pack. I do like his designs and he is pretty good to work with. I believe he is to a certain extent a victim of his success. Taht said I believe my next folder will be one of his. Steven

1. Sebenza has better blade-to-handle ratio
2. Onlayed Sebenzas have more highly evolved blade finish.
3. Onlayed Sebenzas put the onlays on both sides.
4. Sebenzas use an allen screw for pivot pin, Rick uses slotted screw

If you see upgraded Sebenza, cool! Like I said, I see upgraded Striders.

I'm not a real big fan of G10 on one side/Ti on the other, but if that's how it's made, it won't stop me from making the purchase.

From this post it seems to me you have not handled many or any of Rick's knives. From the comment about the slotted screw pivot alone, it sounds like you have only ever looked at pics of the XM-18, which IIRC is the only knife of his that does use the slotted screw. And that was a design feature so something as simple as a coin could be used to adjust it in the field.

Hell, I have one of Rick's Flames that does have G10 onlays/overlays on both sides right here in my pocket. And look, it also has a torx head pivot screw.

1. Have handled about 12 of Rick's knives.
2. The original review request was about the XM-18, so that was what I gave my observations on
3. Two Flames that I saw did not have the onlay on both sides, but I could have my models mixed up. I am not a huge devotee of Rick's knives, but I do love his modular kubaton:D

Have an extra special day, and remember to hug yourself, and floss after eating.

It makes sense, if you think about it: Titanium on the lock side for frame-lock strength (as opposed to a liner lock), and textured G-10 on the side where your fingers go for better retention and comfort (titanium gets c-c-cold!).

Don't forget that the G-10 side has a nested liner, too, which is an improvement over the Strider folders IMHO.

Sorry if I was assuming you where speaking to Rick's knives in general and not just the XM-18.

The XM-18 is definately the "hard use" knife of his line and is bound to draw some comparisons to Striders given it's single sided G10 and Ti.....but thats about as close as they come IMO anyway.

Honestly I don't know how many overlayed Flames rick has made. Maybe you are thinking of his inlayed Flame? they are single sided only.

Yes his Kubatons are sweet.

My day will be extra special in few more mins when I leave work....:)
