The compressor is the big item. You need a lot of air to run a blaster.

Small pieces are really hard to work on!!

Small pieces are indeed a pain at times.... Being small, its easier on me hand filing the bevels... But everything else is more of a pain.

Yea needing the compressor is the only real reason i havent jumped on that cabinet already. I was looking at the blast cabinets at HF and read they require at least a 1HP air compressor... But all the other reading i did elsewhere says more like 5-7.5HP. Im not sure if the people saying 5-7.5HP are using much larger cabinets or if HF is just crazy LMAO

for your small stuff, a small compressor might do. the problem is the CFM required to operate a blaster with a given media. If you need to do anything of size, you'll need a lot of air continuously with a motor/compressor that can keep up with you draining the reservoir.

Not to rain on your parade but there are a couple things you should consider... first, ask around a LOT before buying the HF blasting cabinet. I don't know anyone who has one that's happy with it... apparently they're not very well-made and tend to leak media all over the shop.

More importantly... what types of steels do you plan on working with most? Blasting carbon-steel blades is a very bad idea (unless you're going to have them coated, in which case whoever does the coating will blast them to prep the steel). It looks cheap in my opinion but moreso, there's just too much surface area for moisture and gunk. Even stainless and tool-steel blades will rust a lot quicker (sometimes if you just look at them funny) after being blasted. How bad the problem is depends on the media you use, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it for anything like O1, 52100, 1095 etc that will be left bare. You might consider tumbling/stonewashing instead if you want a nice even non-directional finish.

Oh snap!

Two of my little un's are sick. Got to spend the entire day snuggling my littlest guy. I think this is the longest I've gotten him all to myself for. :D

No response. Goes orange, instant big dog, and forgets about the little people. :D

LMAO!!

Sorry about that bud, it wasnt intentional i just missed the posts somehow.

I appreciate it man!!

Wait till he turns red someday. Those guys are total dicks and won't listen to anyone

I know thats right LMAO -snark

I kind of want my own subforum.... Not because im doing a whole lot or anything, it would be pretty dead in there actually lmao, But i have no idea where to post some WIP pictures on the little hawks and info about the stuff im making and ideas i have... In the custom knife section in my WIP thread i posted a picture of my hex hawks and Ray commented about wanting one and i said one could be his, he said "i'll take it" and i got a couple "reminders" from 2 different mods saying not to turn it into a sales thread... But i wasnt TRYING to sell anything there... I didnt mention price or even say i was selling them in that subforum. I was just showing what i was working on... I know i should of just said "send me a PM" or something like that.... so it was my fault... But yea, i cant keep posting new ideas and projects in the same WIP thread and have no idea where to post them. Little hawks are not really knives, so even the custom knife section doesnt seem like a good place.

Lost is me LMAO

Sweet deal. I got my 4 from Dex as well. You gonna mod it, or leave it as is?

Prolly leave it alone, for a while anyways. I want to get some of the becker micarta for it though.

I'll probably end up stripping mine one of these days. I like the used looks of it for now anywhos.

Yea they look good stripped too. But i normally wait till i wear out the coating a little first.

Id like to stonewash it... But then again id hate to have to put an entire new edge on it afterwards LOL

I think i figured up something for stonewashing large knives last night. It would be a bit tiring and time consuming though. But it wouldnt take up any space.

Involves a large PVC pipe with a handle at one side to turn it, built into the side of a work table...

This should go in the 'Head Makers thread, but I'll say this: low speed stepper motor.

For the purpose of keeping this off-topic thread on topic, I don't see where you would light it....or why you'd want to hand crank a pipe, anyway.
