Rockstead Knowledge Thread

Received additional hi red pictures from the seller, the knife requires extensive works to bring it back to factory condition.

Scratch marks, some in a dark red hue. Chipped edge visible on the photo, the seller was not very forth coming on how he managed to chip the blade.

I'm based in South Africa, it's not advisable to send a knife via mail, and there is the possibility of it been confiscated on the way back. Plus the additional sharpening costs, just can't be bothered.

Too bad we actually worked out a pretty good trade deal, my Canon L lens plus cash for the knife.

You guys think I should still get it? If I offer him lens and no cash?

PS Had a chat with the seller, and it seems he is not really a knife guy, he just love collecting oriental stuffs, that explain the lack of maintenence on the knife.

Don't touch that thing with a 10' pole:)

Like I mentioned before condition is King when buying used. Of course it's your decision but it also depends on your expectations as well. I purchased a new one and just received it today. My expectations where that it would be new and without faults. That's the way I received it and my expectations have been met. You've mentioned that you knew this thing had faults and it sounds like you expect that Rockstead will be able to fix it. Actually this may or may not be the case. I'm glad you received pictures first but it sounds like it may even be in worse condition that what you anticipated. If it were me I wouldn't purchase it as I said previously. But what I might advise you to do is to ask the seller if he wouldn't mind you sending the pictures to Rockstead to get an evaluation from them first. Couldn't hurt they might be able to give you an estimate and tell you what they may and may not be able to fix and how much it would cost you. This way at least you'll have a clearer idea as to what your reasonable expectations could be if you went ahead and purchased the knife. Even if they could restore it they will have to remove metal to do it. Depending on how deep the scratches are will depend on how much metal they will have to remove. That is if they will even do it and its very possible you might be stuck with that other persons patina.

Per your recent information regarding the knife, I would definitely NOT trade/buy it no matter how good the deal may be!

One other thought. There's a difference between use and abuse, and in this case is sounds more like abuse. I wouldn't touch this thing. Who knows what else maybe wrong with this knife.

I really appreciate everyone's input on this, when I first post this I was on the fence whether or not to flight down to Cape Town to meet the seller (I'm from Johannesburg, a near 2 hour flight)

Now after I saw the photos and spoke to the seller(he also mentioned if you run your nail along the curved belly section of the blade you'll feel some unevenness, which I take it as additional chippings) , my second thoughts had turn into a case of FOMO:-)
You just don't get Rockstead in South Africa, the highest end knife you can get here is probably CRKs, and South African customs (and the top guys don't take orders, you just have to try find them at the knife shows, or they are too busy doing orders for overseas clients, )

Based on everyone's opinions and knowing I have to send it to Japan to get the blade refinished (I still have ZT parts that are stuck in transit for over 3 months now, no way I'm taking that chance with a Rockstead), I'll have to let this one pass, but rest assured I'll have one eventually :-)

Again thank you all for your comments, really looking forward to getting a Rockstead in the (hopefully not too distant) future.

Wow I guess I didn't understand how hard it might be for you to even expect to get a knife. However I still believe the knife you described would be a mistake. Good luck and I hope you get the right knife in not to distant future.

II received this yesterday but unfortunately photobucket was down at the time. The blade on this is just stunning.

Dddrees, nice looking blade.

Talked to the seller and explain to him why I'm not going to buy the knife , but if he can send the knife to Japan and get it fixed, I'll still be interested, who knows I might still get it.

And it turn out he use it to hack bamboo! I think he might have watched one too many of those rockstead demo videos 😂

Going on day 5 of US Customs purgatory for my Higo. I'm pretty surprised how it's faster to ship something from China to here than it is from the UK to here.

Is that a single bevel (as in zero grind - forget the Japanese term) Chi?

I'm curious too. I don't think it has a Shinogizukuri grind. Reason being, that since you can't see the sharp line that separates the tanto point, the Shinogi probably isn't showing either. In other words, I think it's just an illusion from the lighting.

Stay strong! I'm sure the anticipation is killing you:D

Congrats Dddrees! It's a beauty

The paperwork claims its a Shinogizukuri grind, but unfortunately I'm a bit new at this so you got me. Its probably my picture that makes it look a bit off or at least that would be my guess.

It has to be Shinogizukuri, here's a pic to see the differences. I mis-spoke earlier, yours is supposed to be Shinogizukuri.

Notice how the one on the left has 2 different bevels and the one on their right has one bevel.
