those spots do not look 'normal' to me and neither does the edge. Did you get the knife new or used?

Agreed, that Chi looks like it's been whored-around a little bit. If it's used, you should ask for your money back or take it around the block a few more times and live with it:D

Used.

Yeah, the more I closely inspect it, the more I'm considering that. Alternatively, maybe I'll send it to Japan.

I'm not sure at this point.

The more I look at that picture, the more I cringe. The sharpening job looks terrible!

Why does the secondary bevel look smaller towards the tip:confused:

That edge was touched up, no doubt. Wonder if the seller made that clear? if not send it back and get a refund.

Sending it to Japan is going to cost you money for sharpening and for postage...... if you add that up to the cost of the knife - a brand new one would be near the price. I am making assumptions about the price, unless you got it for a song and dance.

You can try Flitz or another metal polish on the denim strop that Rockstead recommends. It's usually abrasive enough to cut through mineral deposits and won't scratch the finish of the blade.

Although I have to admit, I've never seen something like those spots appear on my unclad ZDP Chi. Wonder if it was some slurry/swarf from that (not pretty) sharpening job. I'm glad to see another Rockstead getting used, but hope it wasn't misrepresented in your deal.

Unfortunately, the only thing the seller mentioned were the spots (which I figured I could deal with).

I'm not going to dump anymore in this thread, though. Thanks for the advice.

Honestly, if the seller truly didn't mention this to you, you should definately ask for a refund and return the knife to him/her. I've sharpened my Chi countless times, and the edge still looks great. That is an amateur hack-job at best; probably thought they knew what they were doing, but didn't.

If the seller gives you problems, tell us here and also let the GBU subforum know. I'm sorry that someone had the guts to send you a Rockstead in such poor condition. Absolutely unacceptable IMO...

Get your money back, spend a few more bucks, and get a brand new one. There's nothing like that new Rockstead smell:D

I have spoken to the seller and he is willing to refund, although he already spent the funds on a grail so it will be a couple weeks -- I'm just thankful he is willing to refund.

I wish I could find one for sale with a wait time shorter than 2-4 months! Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough?

Thanks for your input, Blues. It is much appreciated.

Today I learned how duralumin holds up against impact.

I was carrying my Chi at work today (as usual) and I was about 12-15' high on a scissor lift. My impact driver has a "pocket clip" that allows it to hang off your pocket/belt while you're not using it, and I had my Chi in my right pocket and the driver clipped next to it. I went to use the driver and somehow my Chi got caught on it and fell off of the side of the lift, banging straight onto a concrete slab. I didn't think much of it, and just put the knife back into my pocket after I retrieved it.

Later on, I was about to strip some wire with the Chi and I noticed that the blade wouldn't open up fully; only 1/4 of the way. The duralumin was "mushroomed" on a corner, and was in the way of the blades travel path. I had 2 options: send it to Japan, or fix it myself. I took the path-less-traveled and used a steel file to grind down the mushroomed section.

I've had my Sebenza suffer much higher falls, and I've never noticed the titanium "mushrooming" like the duralumin did. I still love my Chi, but I really wish that Rockstead would offer more titanium models with pocket clips. If they offered a YXR7 Chi w/ DLC coated titanium scales, I'd probably never carry another knife. The duralumin Chi will have to do for now, but I'll keep dreaming for a Ti Chi to happen:D

Nontheless, it is still my favorite knife currently, and I won't let this ruin the great experience I've had with said knife. However, if you carry a duralumin Rocky, be careful not to drop it or else the scales may suffer quite some damage. It's pretty safe to assume that titanium would be "tougher" than duralumin, but this just confirmed my theory.

Anyways, I hope you guys are all enjoying you Rockys:)

The "left" corner is where the mushroomed part was, and this pic was taken after I filed it down. The right corner shows some signs of impact too.

Yikes! I can't say I'm entirely surprised, I accidentally dropped a titanium handled knife onto a Lionsteel SR-1A from probably only 8 inches above the Lionsteel and it dented the aluminum more than I expected. I am pleased with how the coating has held up on the aluminum of my Higo, but luckily it has not been dropped.

Yea, I wasn't really surprised either. I've dropped my Chi a few times, but the falls only resulted in some damage to the black coating. That's interesting to hear about the SR-1A too!

I actually like how duralumin wears in over time. The dents/scratches I've acquired on my Chi act like "jimping" and help rid of the slick feeling when brand new:D But I think the lack of impact resistance leaves more to be desired (titanium).

I can't help but wonder how much of a price increase we'd see from a titanium Chi, Higo, Shin, etc.. Their other Ti models are typically $1,500+ so I wonder if their use of duralumin helps keep the cost down due to the intricate machining patterns they use.

Sorry about the scar on your knife Blues. That duralumin is quite 'soft' and I noticed when I took my knife apart. I had to 'pry' it open after removing the screws.

Good thing that you had the knife closed and the blade did not get damaged. Keeping it as is is better as it shows character. Post a pick of what it looks like.

I wonder if you did send it Japan what it would cost to replace the scales?

Wow, sorry to hear that Blues. Glad top hear you wear able to make the necessary adjustments. I wonder what Rockstead would have charged for a replacement handle.

The scar from the fall is just one of many. So far, I feel that the coating on the duralumin is ok. It doesn't peel, but can wear off fairly easily from what I consider normal daily use.

Looking at the "show" side, you can clearly see wear marks, but nothing that makes the knife appear neglected.

A peek at the spine shows some heavy wear where my tape measure or other tools bump against the Chi. Please excuse the grip tape, it helps me get a better grip:)

The blade also has a few spots where the dlc coating has worn off. It's pretty amazing that something as hard as the dlc coating comes off near the edge, but the edge itself shows no signs of damage. I don't know what wore the dlc off, but it was definately something very abrasive and hard!

Overall, I really like how it's broken in for me. It's pretty much the only knife Ive been carrying for quite a while.
