6^^ DLC coating coming off is not surprising to me. If I remember correctly this happens with DLC coated watches. In fact this is one of those things that makes a DLC coated watch less attractive to me.

I like how you call it broken in, thats the way it needs to be - used as a tool. I bet some time at the spa in Japan and it will be sharp and ready for many more years of service. How long have you had your Chi?

In the case of the Chi, the DLC actually has helped hide a lot of wear marks. My other non-coated user blades show a lot of wear from a similar amount of use. In the right lighting, the blade doesn't even look like it's been used.

I'd imagine a watch gets bumped and banged around a lot more than a blade though, my Laco (cheap watch) shows some nasty scars around the bezel.

I've had it since last November and have never sent it to Japan, I do my own sharpening on it. Words can't express how much I love this knife. I don't know if I'd be able to send it to Japan because I wouldn't want to be without it!:)

Hey rockstead guys. I managed to do something dumb and stripped a screw on my Ryo-h. I don't plan on disassembling it anymore obv, but is there anything I can do about this? Kinda annoying to look at. I contacted rockstead, but I imagine I'll get told to send it in

Wait for a response or send it in. It's that simple.

What type of drivers are you using?

Wiha, which is what concerned me. I purchased a new set of them after this. I'll wait and see what they charge me and probably send it in. Just frustrated that I tried more than anything

I noticed that my Wiha drivers "skip" over the threads on my Chi if I don't apply adequate downward pressure. Additionally, the screws are very small, thus stripping easily:(

If you told Rockstead that you disassembled it (or tried) you
may have voided your warranty.

Yeah I was worried about this, I took a stone to my t5 to make it fit better too, it still stripped.

I'm not worried about the warranty, I am confident that I can maintain the edge. Most likely it will never be resharpened, this is more of a sentimental piece than anything else. I just want it to be smooth and look pretty on the occasion I have it open and using it, and I'll pay whatever fee it is to have it back to that.

To update on my case, Rockstead replied to me stating my warranty is still intact despite my attempt at disassembly, and are okay to do the repair free of charge. Very cool of them! Would you all recommend waiting to get it sharpened as well, or just do it now?

I noticed that my wiha drivers are a touch loose in the Ryo. I suspect the screws may be titanium (soft) and that they used some kind of thread locker. It gave a touch of torque after hitting it with some heat but didn't feel any movement and backed off. I suspect it needs some serious heat to break the threadlock.

There likely is some in there, and titanium seems to be what it is. I recommend not trying to disassemble after this experience. Acetone followed by a quick rinse is enough for me. Then some fluorinated grease and it's glassy smooth. I don't k

If you've used it a lot and its edge isn't able to be restored by denim/compound then it'd be a good idea to have them sharpen it as well (provided you don't want to try yourself, Blues has been successful).

A tip to break the thread locker with heat - try using a soldering iron on the head of the screw to apply heat.

I have not used it much at all, probably unnecessary right now. I'll probably send it anyway. And that's a great idea with the soldering iron! I'll do that next time (but not on this knife)

Couldn't stand it any longer. [emoji16] Just picked up a new Rockstead Chi with YXR blade and DLC coating. Tanto blade looks killer, will post up some pics when it arrives. [emoji846]

Nice!! You are going to love it. Post it when you get it.

A couple of initial (crappy) pics. I'm very happy with the initial level of sharpness and overall feel.

^very nice! I have had this exact knife on the brain for the last month or so. It looks dark in the pics you took. A lot of pictures don't even look like a dlc blade.

It's hard to photograph a Rocky. Typically, the pictures either make the bevel look too dark or it looks like a chrome mirror polish. In person, the DLC's look like a tinted piece of glass but mirror polished.

See? Looks like a "regular" mirror in these pics.
