Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

have the RR work knife/sodbuster in amber bone. Have carried a few times and it is big...practice to see if the GEC Texas camp knife will be doable. the RR has a good pull of 7 which is good as the lockback doesn't engage. the seller never contacted me so the big retailer-Am gave me a credit which I used to order another canoe.:D

the work knife is otherwise solid, really good snap, centered and no wobble. it has found a home on my small FAK that I keep in my work duffle.
my larger FAK in the car will need one now...or a large camp knife.

Those certainly ARE a large knife, which is why I much prefer the Jr. version. The Texas will be bigger still... By the way, don't you mean liner-lock? This is not a lock-back knife. If the liner doesn't engage, it might just be filth or metal shavings in there, a good clean out should sort it. You are right, they have a good strong slipjoint backspring anyway.

Regards, Will

I bought one because I really like the double end jack and am sick of the nearly ubiquitous pen blade, and thinking that I would pay the asking price for just the sheath. And am glad I bought mine happy with getting the sheath for that price. Mine has gaps, blade wobble, wonky shield, the small blade is a nail breaker, the large is almost floppy and didn't come all that sharp. And the bolsters are really yellow, and the shield is proud and wonky. And both blades aren't parallel to the spine, need to file the kicks.
The clip sheath holds my Camillus #67 really well, though.

No denying, you got a bad one, I'd look into exchanging it. Blade wobble and nail-breaker blades call for a return. However, a few of the things you mentioned, you will find on any replacement you get. The yellowish bolsters seem to be common. I think the Chinese manufacture their nickel steel with more brass than some others. Also, on a two blade, single spring pattern the blades are usually crinked to fit, and aren't meant to be parallel to the backspring.

Here's a Buck canoe and stockman from this Christmas with a RR Camp knife.
Think they're made in the same factory?
I threw in the fixed blade but it was made in USA

Will...yes I meant the liner-lock, which is just a <1mm too long. I have to figure out a way to file it down. It's still a lot of metal to file down in such a small space. I tried a toothpick sized piece of a nail file...it would take forever even on brass. I did try cleaning it out also, thanks.
It is big! and I am glad that it has SS blades so that it can be tucked away without maintenance issues.

There is a burr on one side of the kick on both blades that needs to go- I understand it won't sit flush on a table but its not even close on this knife. Oddly, I'm not talking.a little yellow on the bolsters but it looks more brass than silver in strong sunlight.
This one has become a test mule for me. Sharpened way thin, to see how it holds up (pretty well) used a C clamp to crush out the gaps (worked well of bolsters, helped with the wobble) still gappy on the back spring. The 440a takes a hell of an edge even if the factory edge was ehh. I will check out more RRs, would like to see more with extras like what came with the Dogbone.

Here you go. :)

While I'm taking pictures: I got this RR Dogbone Jack some time back. Under $10 and comes with a clipped sheath and very shrill whistle!

I love the Dog Bone Jacks. I bought one, liked it so much, I immediately ordered a few more for gifts. They're an instant hit with dog people, but double so for dog people that also like knives.

the RR tortoise canoe arrived and looks real good, very good fnf. The tortoise really shines with the brass liners.
The white bone canoe I got recently got some uneven stains at the pins and bolster from some work in the garage ( even with after a mineral oil coating)...so I will tea stain it, and post some pictures once it gets as much tea as it can pick up. Great experiment knives.
The white bone barlow had much better black specks and has not stained any with use.

here with the Buck.

These new Colt Wharncliffe knives have an interesting handle shape. I can't decide if I like it or not.

Interesting shape. Kind of a Copperhead Coffin Jack. Looks like it might be comfortable to use.

Yes, very unusual, have to look out for one of those

I've been enjoying this thread so I thought I'd show my newest Rough Rider, the Turkey Hunter Trapper with a choke tube wrench.

Now if they just made it in single blade as well....Maybe a Wharny?....I like the shape...

I like the clip blade it's my favorite shape overall. A wharncliff would be nice too, you can still dress a turkey with it!

Very cool knife. For the price I just have to get one.

Picked up two new Rough Riders lately, both in Amber Jigged Bone. First one is this Camp/Scout knife:

Second is this 4-Blade Stockman. I like the idea of a traditional stockman blade configuration with a cap lifter added; I only wish they had used the longer style cap lifter that's on the Camp knife.
