Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

Hmm sounds like they let one slip by quality control, I only have 2 at the moment, both pictured on this thread. The barlow is great overall, the work knife(sodbuster) I had to bend the lock bar a bit with needle nose pliers a tad to get a good engagement. I also filed the lock down a bit, the stock shape had kinda a peak to it I found uncomfortable. But other than that it quickly became one of my favorites Edit: you can compare my modified lock from my above post to the coal miner in Stormdrane's nicer pic

Glad to see some reporting on the RR carbon whittler. I love the design, but haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. I sort of dislike ordering from them as the shipping is about 50%+ more plus the cost of the knife. Guess I'm going to have to just bite the bullet and pay their $8 shipping fees :-( unless you have a better source. $8 shipping for a $12 knife just isn't going to happen!

I really wish they would make a barlow in this series. Love barlows.
Rich
Just consider it a $20 knife and you're good!

I would say a regular one or small, mine is a grand daddy barlow,

I wish they still made the grand daddy barlow in smooth white bone. Their undyed bone looks great. I had one and gifted it I think.

I picked this one up at a local sports shop. Kinda a local but high toned place. I can't afford most of their stuff. But th Rough Riders was at a decent price. $14 for the barlow, and I think the same for the sodbuster pattern. Just to give an example of their normal pricing on everything in the place, a Gerber strongarm is like 54 bucks at Wal-Mart, they have 75 bucks on theirs. I really like the white smooth bone, I think its a classy look'n barlow.

A 3-1/2" Gunstock. The pull is strong and it snaps like a gator. Fit and finish is above average with well centered blades.
...
Good-looking gunstock, John!:thumbsup::thumbsup: Are the handles amber jigged bone?
Here's my first gunstock, also a Rough Rider, that I received recently (thanks, Barrett). Smooth bone handles, but I'm not sure what RR calls them - appaloosa??

JohnDF JohnDF , Yes I think it turned out nice, I forgot to mention and my pic is a bit fuzzy to tell, but I did polish the bone. Used my dremel and some green compound. I left the bolsters with the 1200 grit finish, there smooth but with a bit of a matte look.

Hi guys

I was wondering if anyone knows if Rough Rider or anyone else have any current 6 blade stockman models? I snapped a main blade on the only one I have at the moment and I'm kinda bummed about it, I know it's a little on the big side but I've found the extra width to be useful for heavy, repetitive use.

check your pm.

Other than lacking the Acorn shield, it looks like their "Smooth Tobacco Bone".
I can see what you mean, but I think the gunstock bone is more red, and less brown, than my smooth tobacco bone knives. And the way the mark side dye is really "weak" near the pivot bolster seems intentional, and is thus less uniform than my smooth tobacco bone knives. (That kind of "mottled" look is why I guessed it might be some kind of appaloosa, but I don't know if that's even a name RR uses for handles.)

Yes, Amber Jigged Bone.
I like the rifle shield on yours, gives it a very rustic look.
Thanks for the confirmation on your handles, John, and for the shield compliment.:)

I would like to say a public thank you to Alain for his help, while the store he pm'd me about turned out to be out of stock it was the best lead I've had on any 6 blade stockman.

Could you point me in the direction of those posts?

I'm interested to know how they went about getting RR to repair/replace the knives.

The reason I ask is that I have the large red bone stockman like the one a few posts back, and one of the backsprings broke.

I know that this is a rare occurrence and can happen with any brand, so it hasn't put me off RR (just bought a couple more actually).

The spring didn't break during use, it happened in my pocket - I reached in and felt that the sheepsfoot blade was open.
Luckily the sheepsfoot is my most used blade and was in dire need of a sharpening, so I didn't cut myself.

I recently used the warranty to replace a copper series fishing knife. I called SMKW, they didnt have my order in their system, but they told me to send it to them. It had blade play. So I sent it in, and about a week later, I got back.......a tiny lady's leg knife... I was not happy.... so I called them and they fixed it. Soneone had misread the model number of the knife. So, they rushed me a new fishing knife. They told me to keep the lady leg, and they apologized. Great customer service. Both knives are brand new. So, just give SMKW a call and ask about Rough Rider repair and replacement.

I would like to add a "related slipjoint" to the thread, and a short story. I am into traditional archery. My friend Mike is also. He and his family invited me to an archery show, a traditional archery rendevous thing. I was going to go, but my aunt suddenly had a heart attack (in her early forties!). So, I had to cancel our plans and go to Georgia, as she was on life support. Well, the day after we left she passed away. When I got back, I went fishing with Mike. He surprised me with a small tin box he had bought from the archery rendevous. The box was blue, with a horse on it and "Colt" in big letters. Inside, there was a brand new Bonestag Colt folding hunter 175th anniversary edition! The knife is drop dead gorgeous! Two razor sharp blades, stout pulls, incredible fit and finish, and the bonestag is really nice. I actually couldnt tell if it was bone or stag for a while, since it looks so realistic. It also has a reverse frosted blade etch on the secondary blade (almost a fillet style blade, but thicker, the main blade is a big clip point), its also done nicely. The knife has a sturdy feel, and I carry it even though the Colt knives are not in production anymore. Its a very nice knife, from a great friend. I have always liked that pattern, and this year, I will use it out hunting. With some luck, I can bag a deer with a longbow, either the selfbow I just made, or a longbow I have on loan from Mikes dad. This would be my first deer with traditional gear, and I want to skin it with the Colt knife.

Would love to get my hands on that particular model. It's one of two I have, as yet, been unable to acquire here in England, that and the small Copperhead. Nice looking knife sir.

Thanks Blake. It is my favorite of the four RR knives I own. I hadn't seen it around either but was lucky to spot one on The Bay. If your lucky enough to find one, it has the strongest pull/snap of any of the RR knives I've owned.
