Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

"Glennbad RR GAW I'm in"

That is, indeed a beautiful knife. I've only recently started collecting, and I've been focusing on whittling friendly blades and patterns. I've been thinking that a Muskrat and/or Trapper would probably be one of the last patterns I collect because of the redundant blades, but the Wharncliffe/Clip combination on this one makes it a real winner.
I went to their official site and couldn't find anything that mentioned a warranty, but I've found people on other forums and blogs saying that they helped them repair or replace pretty much no questions asked even when they let RR know that they didn't have a receipt or they weren't the original purchaser.

Nice!

Could you point me in the direction of those posts?

I'm interested to know how they went about getting RR to repair/replace the knives.

The reason I ask is that I have the large red bone stockman like the one a few posts back, and one of the backsprings broke.

I know that this is a rare occurrence and can happen with any brand, so it hasn't put me off RR (just bought a couple more actually).

The spring didn't break during use, it happened in my pocket - I reached in and felt that the sheepsfoot blade was open.
Luckily the sheepsfoot is my most used blade and was in dire need of a sharpening, so I didn't cut myself.

RR Big Daddy,RR work knife, Bear &Sons lockback soddie. Really liking the Rough Rider knives, superb quality I think, especially for the price. The Bear&Sons is a great working knife, takes a wicked edge. However has a bit of side to side play, and a bit in the lock up. I've read their QC is hit and miss. I got the barlow mostly because I have a 1979 case(came out same year as me lol) the same style and size with brown bone scales.however its in storage at my sisters 3 hrs away.

Well ... I decided to give my 301 a vacation starting today.
Put my Rough Rider 898 Ol' Yellah' Stockman in my pocket, instead.
Six blades are more versatile than three, right? :)

Blades are:
Long Clip
Short Clip
Short Spear Point (AKA: "Pen blade")
Long Spear Point
Sheepsfoot
Spey/Budding

That is one hell of a knife. A pic would be good. I have the same thing in Armor Hide. I couldn’t carry it. “Is that a great big fat folder in your pocket or are you glad to see me?”

I emailed them today and they told me that RR have a lifetime warranty!

I don't know how they manage to do that at this price, but the knives are well made so I guess they don't get too many returns.

They don't have the exact model in stock, but they said I can choose another one of the same value.

I have to call them tomorrow and set it up.

Aww come on, Henry Beige Henry Beige .
It's only a 4 layer, about 1/16 inch wider than a 3 layer 301 and the same width as a SAK Huntsman, which pocket carries quite nicely. :)

Unfortunately, no lady has ever used that line on the rare occasion one speaks to me.
They are generally more concerned about not not puking when they see me, and getting me out of their sight as quickly as possible. (Yes. I am that ugly.)

Great snap and the f&f is great for a knife at this price.

I stoned the main blade and it is starting to take on a good patina.
So far the steel is holding a good edge but I haven’t tried any rough stuff yet.

Glad to see some reporting on the RR carbon whittler. I love the design, but haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. I sort of dislike ordering from them as the shipping is about 50%+ more plus the cost of the knife. Guess I'm going to have to just bite the bullet and pay their $8 shipping fees :-( unless you have a better source. $8 shipping for a $12 knife just isn't going to happen!

I really wish they would make a barlow in this series. Love barlows.

Congrats on the carbon steel whittler, willc willc ; that looks superb!:cool::cool::thumbsup:
I've seen some of Rough Rider's carbon steel models, but not that wharncliffe whittler. What's the model number? Thanks.

5K Qs 5K Qs The carbon whittler is RR1741.
The springs are split back and pretty tight and flush.

It really is a nice pattern I just wish one of the small blades was a wharncliff or sheepsfoot.
I may just grind one of the pens down.

Modifying one of the secondary blades sounds like it would make the knife more versatile.:cool: Or how about a coping blade? Sometimes that's even called a "cut-off pen" and seems like it should be a pretty easy mod giving you a straight-edged blade.
(Because of a poorly planned handle mod I did on an Opinel, I was forced to turn the Opinel's blade into a spearpoint to keep the tip inside the handle, and it turned out quite well. If I can do that, anybody can!)

Galeo-

Is that a standard or granddaddy barlow?
Rich
I'm not galeo, but it looks like the micro (peanut next to it?).

I would say a regular one or small, mine is a grand daddy barlow,

It is the small, single bladed barlow with amber colored, jigged bone scales. I like it a lot but as I said, the finish is a tad better on the peanut. The peanut and a large trapper I have, as well as two barlow are by far the best.
I have a whittle that absolutely blows... Holes in the bolsters and such, no idea where those came from.
