Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

Whetrock, I have a couple of their yellow synthetic handled knives, and I prefer the "milky" more faded look to the yellow.
I have carried and used both with great satisfaction.

I like the yellow myself, but I have noticed some cracking at the centre pins on some. It may have been there from the start or developed more, not sure.

Well I guess I've pulled the trigger on a Toad Sticker. I can't lie it was the name that sold me (as well as the price). It should prove to be a fine citrus or sausage knife at the least. The blue celluloid handle is killer as well and very becoming as well. All in all I'll find some use for it.

Anyone know if that whittler I am showing comes in other colors/handle materials. I am having a hard time finding any other versions. Let alone the proper name of the knife. Rough Rider has several "whittlers"

It comes in a few variations , if you google "Rough Rider boxcar whittler" you should find a few.

panzertroop, that Whittler is a fine specimen. For some reason in particular it's got a slightly different ring to it than most Rough Riders I've seen. The Spearpoint blade really looks grand. The appearance and even the name seem kinda GEC-esque to me.

I have one of the black ones, and this even knife is bigger and huskier than one might think. One seller calls it the "Old" Whittler. Box Car Whittler seems appropriate. Might be good fot whittling hiking sticks, but not one for doing any detail work.

Kind of similar to their Gunstock pattern which also has a nice Spear blade with matchstriker pulls.

Love that Boxcar Whittler! It seems that shipping is as much as the knife, though. Why does it cost $9,00 to mail a pocketknife?

scattershot where are you ordering from? I got mine on[the web for cheap] and change shipped!

Hey folks. Let's keep the discussion about the knives, not how much they cost or where we got them. Thanks in advance.

Got this micarta model stockman and it sat for quite some time and was looking a little rough so I cleaned it up, reprofiled the edges and sanded the whole thing down with wet and dry 1000 grit. Will give this some pocket time.

Just bought a Marbles Workman series in a scout knife pattern that SMKW said is made in their RR factory. Nice knife and has G-10 handles.

I bought the large yellow composition handled trapper a couple of days ago. So far no complaints, it was hair popping sharp out of the box and no indications of the blades rubbing against the liner. Overall the fit and finish were good with no gaps or blade play. The only negative was sharp corners on the composition handles nothing some carry time or a quick pass with a buffer won't fix.

The shop owner had similar model Case and Buck trappers for comparison, the Rough Rider seemed to be as well made as either of the others. The Case had more blade play than the Rough Rider other than that there was no real difference except price. The owner claimed that the Buck imports and Rough riders are made in the same factory, does anyone here know if that is true?

So far I have no complaints about a knife that I paid $17 for to use as a worker. I may have to go get one of the canoe models before long.

I am a fan of Case knives but I have to say I've had more blade-play issues with my Case knives than with my Rough Riders. That said I would say that two of my RRs were among the worst pieces of junk I have ever had the misfortune to own. Any issues I have had with Case were sent back to Bradford and resolved perfectly. The bad RR's ended up in the garbage.

Same except I dont like case knives, every single one i've owned has had blade play which is my main deal breaker...he'll I have gotten rid of 4 old US made schrades because blade play in them is virtually impossible to fix right.

If RR ever make a carbon line, my pocket will be sore after I buy them all.

I don't know when (if ever) RR will produce carbon steel slip joints. If they do, however I feel that it would be some even more healthy competition for the US traditional knife world and maybe they'd get their act together and really tighten down on QC. All in all I love Rough Riders and feel they offer great knives that feature to work of competent craftsman. If a 10 dollar Rough Rider feature fit and finish comparable (to a certain extent) to say a Case or Buck Slipjoint imagine what they could churn out for say 25 or 30 dollars. All in all I hope to see the market and production of these inexpensive asian knives develop and compete with the rest of the knife world. I'd love to see Rough Rider come out with a "higher end" brand of a sort.
