Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

A little later to the party, but here is a side by side comparison of case vs. Rough Rider yellow. Not too much difference, maybe a little lighter on the RR.

I went out with my daughter, wife and my daughters boyfriend to the antiques stores in my daughters home town. I saw what looked like a Rough Rider Elephant Toe w/cream scales for 32.00. I was just wondering if the Rough Rider knives were a good bargin? I did not have the owner of the store take the knife out of the case - she was no where to be found until we were leaving, but am thinking that I may have to go back depending on what you learned gentlemen in the Traditional forum can tell me. I have a handful of Schrade stockmans which is the extent of my traditional knives but have always admired elephant toes - I don't know much about Rough Riders and would appreciate anything you can tell me about the brand. Thanks, Steve

They are good inexpensive knives, made in China, with good quality control. I have several, and they give good service. The knife you saw can be bought brand new for less than half that amount. Look around. There's also,a thread on Rough Rider knives on this forum, too.

Happy hunting!

Thanks for the info - didn't know anything about the brand - should have looked it up. Think I will pass on this one.

Big news! Rough Rider just announced a new line of carbon steel knives.

Kind of ironic they announce that when I actually contacted corporate for RR knives asking if they had plans, they told me they appreciated my message and that they would be discussing it further.

Great news!!!

I don't understand the excitement around CV steel blades. Whatever stainless RR is using, the blades take a very sharp edge and hold it well. Do you expect a CV steel to perform even better ? I doubt it, unless they'll be using D2 or some other steel i'm not up on.
I like 1095 a lot, but i don't see it preforming much better than the current RR blades.
So, fill me in, what's the 'buzz' all about ?

Stainless is cold and lifeless? us folksy kind don't just buy slipjoints to cut something and evaluate performance. :)

I wonder if they think knife junkies might add to their bottom line by buying more knives, even duplicates of ones they already own in stainless steel?

Anyone have experience of Colt knives? They are twice the cost of RR's here, and I wondered if they were worth it.
