I had this nutso idea a while back, but I've refined it so I thought I'd present it and see what you all thought.

The goal of this, just because I think it would be cool, is send a particular Spyderco knife around the world and pole to pole. Hopefully we can get reports and pix as it goes, kinda like when those garden gnomes are kidnapped and their travels are put up on web pages.

To accomodate that I think there needs to be a bit of supporting structure in place, as well as some planning. So point wise the plan would look like:

1) Acquire a suitable (non illegal in most countries) Spyderco knife.

2) Have the knife engraved with "Spyderco Around the World Project" as well as an email address and perhaps the url of the forums. That way in case it gets to someone who doesn't knwo what it is, they'll email.

3) Start planning the route and persons, I imagine we can get pretty much everywhere based on participants of this forum. Antartica might be a little difficult. Maybe we try to hit all continents.

4) Send it off and encourage participants to share their pix along the way. Monitor the email address.

5) When it gets back do something cool with it.

Thoughts?

I think that would be great but what about customs? Are you thinking a knife like the UK pen knife?

When it gets back we could have a lottery for it.

I bet most people could be convinced to take pictures of the knife with local attractions. For instance, someone in my home town of San Antonio could take a pic of the knife in front of the Alamo.

That's a great idea- count me in for a west aussie leg of the tour.

Reminds me of a great story. On an oil rig I visited once I saw a photo of a bloke wearing a Collingwood Football Club cap, standing in front of the pyramids in Egypt. It was taped upside down to the roof of the bunk I was sharing (hot bedding with the bloke on night shift).

The story goes that this fellow was a mad Collingwood fan and had travelled all the way to Melbourne to get their star player, Nathan Buckley, to sign the cap - he then proudly wore this at work for the next few weeks.

The cap was stolen and taken hostage and has since been doing a tour of the world. It's handed from friend to friend and has it's photo taken in front of the eiffel tower, golden gate bridge, Ha Long Bay etc. Whenever the boys on the rig get a new photo they tape it to his bunk so it's the last thing he looks at when he goes to sleep. The game has been going on for two years now.

I like it.
We have very knife tolerant laws here in Russia. You can send almost any folder providing its guardless.

Maybbe this will come together. Anyone know anyone near the artic and antartic?

If it's going to Australia, it may as well come to New Zealand!

Possibly could find a way to get it to Antarctica (seriously!)

I know there aare research stations on the south pole, I was hopihn that someone knew someone that worked on the resupply mission from Chile.

I'll email Spyderco and see what they think of the idea.

Anybody have a lead on a DK? Let me know, thanks.

This sound like a really cool idea, I am in.

I have heard of mountainers that go and look after scientists at the South Pole, I thing they would be willing to take a knife with them :D

Sounds like an intersting idea to me, mainly to see how & what for different people use the knife in different parts of the planet.

That is a great idea! Something simple and universally legal like the DKPK would be great. Or, if someone could get their hands on a Pride with all the right flags, the current holder of the knife could take a picture with the flag of her/his country next to a well known landmark.
