Lotsa stuff going on for me, I'll try and get a signup organized in the next few days.

So I had an idea last night for a soldier Spydie passaround... it would be a knife (folder I guess, seems a bit more universally useful) designed specifically for the things soldiers would use a knife for. I'm sure you could find numerous Spydie/knife fans who are actively serving in Iraq and other places, and that way the knife could see real use in the hands of many.

Just think how much the knife would be worth after it was done with it's tour (well, it would certainly have sentimental value)!

My thoughts would be: 4 inch blade and I guess a 5 inch or so handle, since they probably wear gloves a lot, a chinook style opening... "tab", that also serves as a wave, since for them if they should ever have to draw the knife, it should be drawn open, ya know what I mean? It could have a Superhawk type blade -- it should have a bit more penetrating power, I.E. a straighter tip -- because I would imagine they cut a lot of things like cloth and rope, and the blade steel would need to be something that would not rust, because in war I think it's bound to get wet and put away wet... specially for marines/navy, handle material would probably be best as G10 for weight and cost reasons... I don't know much about carbon fiber, but for some reason I think G10 would be a better choice. Maybe throw a nice lanyard on it that wouldn't get it the way too much, but would prevent it from being lost too easily.

Oh, and if it were serrated you could throw in a small sharpener, that way the blade could be kept sharp (a small crock stick type thing would be easier for people who don't know how to sharpen with a stone or anything...). Maybe even pass a PE around in such a way that you get people who can sharpen it every couple of... well, people.

I don't know if this has ever been done before, but I thought it was a cool idea, and something that would certainly bring a smile to any Spydie or knife fan involved (and it's a great way for us all to show gratitude).

Anyways, just something to think about Sal (and DaveH too, this is something that would be better orchestrated in your hands)!

I had some more thoughts about this... I don't have experience with waves, but I don't know that they would open too well if you were crouching...

A hand guard would be good too:

Probably not as easily implemented as:

And a good curve at the bottom of the handle like the full-size Manix would be useful.
