RTAK Type knife

How are you going to break a knife using stupidity?
Shoot if you're that stupid the knife will probably break itself.

Well, someone did send a RC-6 into Jeff to be fixed/replaced. Turns out he broke the tip off by prying bricks out of his driveway.

who is this noss you speak of?

rc-12? do they name their knives by the number of inches they have? i guess it might be so, but what happens when they have two 5-inchers?

EDIT: SPOKE TOO SOON!!! haha was he really using his rc-6 to pry out bricks? what a joker!

Noss is a fellow forum member who likes to do "knife reviews".

Most RC knives are named by size, but they are not exactly 3, 4, 5, or 6 inches. The RC-4 is around 4.5 I think. Also the Izula's name comes from an ant.

I watched the Noss videos, and to be honest, I appreciate what he does. I do not treat my tools that way, but its reassuring to know that a certain knife can exceed some standards. For example, If you were dangling from a repelling line and the tensile strength was 250 lbs. wouldn't it be reassuring to know that it actually broke at 400lbs, and not 251 lbs., especially if had that third donut in the morning instead of the usual one?
Just because he hits the knife blade with a sledge hammer does not mean that is the intended use. Its is certainly nice to know that a blade could take 2 or 20 licks with the hammer before it failed.

make it come out near Christmas, so i won't have to pay for it

BLASPHEMY, :grumpy: That’s too long away. You can always hide it away, unwrap & play with it when no one is looking, and still get it on Christmas.

Keep this thread alive, Who wants a RC Chopper ?

I love the RTAK knife! I ooogled that pattern many times Mike. What's not to like about a simple hard worker :)

I'd like to see a slight recurve like a moderate kukri that actually takes some of the weight off while maintaining a straight top edge for battoning. Lighten it up as much as possible-- I think most people want some decent chopping power but still have a packable knife. Doesn't need to be as thick as a Battle Mistress if you have a saw with you ( and I think most people's systems in a survival setup are using the knife primarily for battoning ). Oh yeah, some jimping on the top that could be used while you're choked up on a choil. Convex please!!
my 2 centavos...

I have both, an original Livesay RTAK and the Ontario RTAK. I've used the hell out of the Ontario. The problem I've found with the Ontario was the handle shape. To wide top to bottom. I reprofiled it on the grinder making a custom fit to my hand. The flat grind works great even though I refer a flat/convex grind. I convexed the edge and it cuts even better then the original V-bevel.
I'm with texastonydobbs with going with the original Livesay RTAK design. That is one hell of a chopper. When I first got it it didn't chop well, once I convexed the edge, the wood chips flew. :D
I'd like to see a 10" blade, 5 1/2" handle, blade forward weight. As for thickness, 3/16" is ideal with a 1 3/4" to 2" width. Handle scales contoured (figure eight contour) Also, a forward lanyard hole will be an absolute plus.
