S!K 4.7 Sample Blade Reviews

So awesome! Way to go! Does this make me the only Wisconsinite here without an SK 4.7?????

If I was in a buying position I totally would have snatched up one of those surprise treats. Does this mean the buyers will have them before the 30 mystery testers? Makes sense since you paid for yours :)

Wife is gonna be pissed though but at least I have this SK coming my way😀

This is gonna sound crazy nerdy... But I feel like Han Solo being thawed from carbonite and having so much to catch up on!!! So exciting!!!

OMG you are such a nerd.

Anyways, to save you the tedium of having to read through all the posts from today, here is a quick recap:

I'll get to participate in this thread now since I was lucky enough to pick one up today.
Can't wait for this one to arrive!

You lucky bastard!! That's what I get for not paying attention to the website.

Another quick note on the coating.
I had an EDC 4 with cerakote and that stuff is almost indestructible. Yeah it shows wear, but it takes a hell of a lot to scratch it.

Woo Hoo!! We scored a 4.1 sample!!

Oh man I'm glad some of us got them!! I fixated on the 5.1 firsts and by the time I was done refreshing and realized there would be no firsts, the samples were long gone. Oh well, I scored two 5.1 seconds, so I'll have a couple happy buddies here before long :) (Being selfish really, one of them is liable to pack off my presale 5.1 if something doesn't give :D )

I just sat down 10-15 min before the sale. Didn't really think much of the sale because when I checked last they only had the 5.1. The iPad was still on the production page so I refreshed it and my jaw dropped when I saw that 4.7 sample. I'll take lucky anytime.

Not to be a show off, but I've had uncommonly good luck lately. I just added these beauties to my cart, to see if I could. I'm hoping my luck continues when I'm actually ready to buy something!!!!!

The DLC coatings were not actually very protective as far as corrosion resistance goes. I believe he had some troubles with a Cerakote applicator many years ago, where the paint came off easily. He has since been very critical of Cerakote applicators and will only work with someone who is listed on the Cerakote website. These are being Cerakoted by a local company we found through the Cerakote website.

Since it is a paint, rather than bonded like a DLC coating, it can get scuff marks and eventually wear off. Though I have to say, I'm pretty impressed that it didn't come off with all your efforts to clean up the scuffs...
It's amazing how much you learn here - Thanks Ellie!

Haha my jaw dropped when I read your post about them! I'm glad you picked one up!

Not ready for a full on review yet, but here is a schematic I made of the geometry of the SK-4.7 (and I assume GSO-4.7) against a few other knives (ESEE-6 not included, I traded it for the BOB+cash).
I was planning to get a TOPS Hog 4.5 for this as well, but in terms of testing the steel this gives me 420HC + 1095 + 1095CV + CPM-3V + SR101. I also have the older SK-4 with S7 steel, geometry similar to the RMD shown. Oh, and i have a Mora Robust to add... The trick with all of these is getting the right geometries to compare, but there's also something to be said for the manufacturer choosing the right geometry to optimize the tool for what they intended. I am impressed by the thinness of the BK-16, although it is a stripped user I purchased here so may not represent factory performance (I'm guessing it performs even better, but I've never had a new one, and this model benefits from the FFG whereas others are saber-grind like the SK).

Uses: slicing cardboard, carving wood (and batonning), cutting carpet and plastic and metal, digging in the sand/dirt. Select knives (including the SK-4.7) will be thrown.

I think you are going to like the new Black Scout Survival video!

Who knows how to do the fancy video showy thing?

It's great to hear how comfortable the 4.7 is and the mention of the deeper index finger pocket was awesome.
