Sage 5!!! Update thread

VERY disappointed that the Sage 5 is G-10/CF Laminate! I hope that somehow it is peel ply when it is released.

I thought peel ply refers the outer layer installed on g-10. Like the Sage 1 and gb1?

Nope, here's a quote from another thread, "carbon fiber is a laminate of woven fibers and resin. Instead of finishing with a smooth layer of resin impregnated fiber, a textured plastic film is used. Instead of being left there, that layer is peeled off, leaving behind the surface texture".

You think KC would take a PM3 preorder? haha

Haha, I'm sure they'd accept a cc #.

What steel you thinking? S110V?

No. Not thinking S110V at all, even though I know many others are.

Yup, any time you have cf looking scale and not smooth it's laminate

This does not compute.

Peel ply only refers to the consistent familiar G10 like surface texture. It could essential be done to pure carbon fiber, or a laminate, or probably even wood, even though that is not the case on an Spyderco models.

The only cf models I've had are a caly 3, sage1, gb1 and a domino blue cf. I don't think I've had a "peel ply" version then.

the caly does have solid CF no? I must admit that solid CF feels much better then the fake laminate over G10. I'd rather have simple G10 then a sticker of CF over G10.

It can be sanded off. Some people have done this to the GB2, Domino, etc...

I personally don't know why it bothers people so deeply, lol. People ask for cost savings without sacrificing function.

ah I didn't know that. It's not that it bothers so much, I just fail to see the point of having a super thing layer of CF over G10. It's not CF and makes the G10 slippery. Me personally, I prefer Spyderco's g10 texturing. It is just right I'd say. I'll have to check around to see the results of that sanding off of the laminate cf layer. I could do it for my Galebradley 1

If you prefer the G10 like texturing, then the peel ply will be right up your alley. With eyes closed it will feel nearly identical.

User DigDug72 on spyderco forum has sanded several of the laminate scales. Can't remember his username here...?

Since when is CF not CF? Last time I checked, CF was CF.

yes, but how thick of CF you get in that laminate layer? It's G10 more then anything else. Real slick G10. I have a ZT0770CF which is made of true CF. a couple of nanometers of CF over G10 vs actual CF scales are worlds apart.

I truly fail to see why anyone would want laminated g10/cf over simple solid CF.

Just because the CF layer on top of the G10 is thin doesn't mean it isn't "true."

It just means it's thin.

It costs less.

I've a sage 1 and a chaparral. I really like the CF scale material, laminated or not. It's nice. One thing to note is its not like there is a definite line on the laminate, my knives just look like one layer of material. If no one told me it might as well be all CF.

Yes, the Caly has full cf scales. What I was trying to say was that I haven't had the peel ply thats on some of the sprints. I'm ok with the layer on top of g10 as well. Works great and takes a beating without looking beat!

I was quickly corrected in another thread about CF laminate being on the GB1 after incorrectly stating it was peel-ply. All part of our edge-u-cation I think.

Anyway, I've come to like the CF laminate, as that's really all I've got. True, not true CF, really, to me, it makes no difference. I love the texture and the look.

I'd love my Sage 1 and GB1 even if they were straight up just G10 like on the PM2 methinks also.

So, as I read this thread more, I noticed the Sage 5 blade is going to be....or at least the prototype blade is/was longer than on the other Sages? Is this correct, or do I need some more edge-u-cation? lol

Speedholes.....you wouldn't be thinking of XHP? Certainly not ELMAX.......oh oh, wait...how bout INFI? doh! haha....actually I'd like to see some 3V. Love me some 3V.

Hey FFG you suck!

I watched it right to the end to see if you could spidey flick it but they didn't show it.
