In the Spyderco 2016 Mid-Year Product Guide the scales are referred to as "textured carbon fiber/G-10 laminate handle scales". So, they're not solid carbon fiber as in the Positron or the usual G-10/CF laminate with a smooth surface as in Sage 1 both from Taichung. Also, they don't seem to be as rough as the Golden peel-ply CF.

I like the compression lock but I have larger hands and it can be some what awkward compared to the PM2. Really wish I had brought my KW M4 PM2 with me but the scales are similar but like you said they are not as rough, smoother but still nothing like the CF on the Sage 1, lol sorry hard to describe. I don't really plan on using this knife much just add it to the rest of the sages in the collection, the only Sage I really carry is the Sage 2. I was surprised to come across these today at the outlet store. They must be about ready to drop on the major websites.

I can relate to your explanation and like you I'm just adding it to my Sage collection (homage to folder locks) and Sage 5 will make 6!

Can one order from the outlet store(s)? I honestly didn't even know they had outlet store(s)? Is it just one store located at the factory? How does that work?

Yes it's the Spyderco Factory Outlet aka SFO. You can generally order any of their products through the SFO but I don't know if they're taking orders for the Sage 5. I would assume so if they're selling them in the store but you'd need to call to confirm. Keep in mind that you're gonna pay more buying through the SFO then through a dealer. The dealers should have these any day so, personally, I'd prefer to wait and save some money.

Unless you're desperate to get one pronto at full MSRP+ I'd just wait until dealers have them in stock next week or so. Granted, that these may perhaps be very popular at the beginning and thus open to temporary extinction.

Like others have said, you can get them but they cost more. I think if you order them online Spyderco will charge full MSRP but I could be wrong. At the store they sell them below MSRP but above what you could get them for from BladeHQ etc. Their explanation for this is that they do not want to undercut their dealers which makes sense. It's just hard when you are in the store with knife in hand, all monetary rationality goes out the window in favor of "I want this now" lol.

BladeHQ has them in stock now as well. Order just placed. Funny though - as usual my in stock notification email has not yet arrived. This is how I always miss the new releases.

Yep, same here. No BHQ notification for me either. Missed out on these first arrivals. I'll keep an eye out now, though, and on the Exchange too.
 
Seems all the dealers are getting them now.....except for the dealer that has my pre-order! Just my luck.

Yeah, one of the dealers had a 20% off sale last weekend so I went ahead and pre-ordered the S5. I figure it's going to be awhile before I see it. No worries!

Well, yesterday, I did get an order confirmation from KC indicating that it was in stock. However, today they said my order got bumped to back order due to some pre-existing pre-orders. I wish they had advised of this sooner since I had the opportunity to get it elsewhere yesterday. Back on the hunt. Cancelled my KC back order.
