SAK Mods! Post your pics, questions and ideas

I was digging around in a bin trying to find my old SwissChamp (didn’t find it), and found an old promotional Rover, that has the older 58 mm combo tool with the flat end instead of the Phillips, and the pointed nail file instead of the SD file. That will make a good donor for a nice custom piece someday.

I think ideally, for civilisation carry, I'd want the Pioneer X, but replace the reamer with the small blade from the Pioneer Settler, and replace the can opener with the small Electrician's blade. And then for wilderness carry, the Farmer X, but replace the can opener with the small Electrician's blade.

I don't need a saw or an awl in the city, and I don't need a can opener, ever. Cans of food are too damned heavy to carry into the wilderness.

Because the Pioneer Settler existed, I know that the small blade will fit in the same layer as the large blade. And because the Electrician exists, I know the small Electrician's blade will fit where the can opener normally is.

And I'd like a Rambler Alox to replace my Rambler. The tweezers are terrible, and I can live without the toothpick.
I like the way you think!

I’ve settled on what I want to make. After doing lots of thinking and lots of research, I’ve decided to build two custom 93 mm Alox knives, one for everyday in-town carry, the other to supplement the first when in the woods.

I’ve realised that I really have no need for the wood saw or reamer in town, and no need ever for the can opener. If I am in town or at home, I have access to better can openers, and if I am in the woods, I won’t be bringing any canned foods. Nor, come to think of it, do I really have a need for the large blade in town, what I really need on a daily basis in town is:

1. The scissors
2. The bottle opener
3. a small knife blade
4. a Phillips driver.

And that leaves me with this fantastic piece made by Robert Lessard:

Only when I go into the woods do I really need the large blade, the reamer, and the wood saw, and that configuration was previously available as the Victorinox Bushcrafter, a dealer exclusive limited edition made for SwissBianco. But again, here’s Robert Lessard with a custom (albeit locking blade) version:

I don’t need a locking blade on a SAK. To fit the inline Phillips from a 91 mm Officer’s knife, Robert used two 93 mm opener layer backsprings, and a couple of spacers to center the Phillips driver between them. You can see that here:

I managed to score some extra 93 mm silver Alox scales, liners, and backsprings from someone who disassembled an Electrician.

If I get myself a Farmer X, that will provide me with all the parts I need save for the small Electrician’s blade, but I’ll just use the can opener as a placeholder for the time being. I just need to secure a 91 mm inline Phillips and some 3 mm and 2.5 mm threaded pivot barrels from DECustomForge in Moscow, and some screws for the pivots.

I’ve put out the word to friends that if they have any disused or broken donor knives I could cannibalise, to send them to me, in order to help me save money. Ordering the pivots isn’t going to be cheap. They are custom machined, and I will need at least three sets, two to use, and one to assemble leftover parts into a third knife. That’s 9 pivots, minimum, and I should probably get another set as spares in case I lose one.

Thanks man! I’m on the home stretch! Can’t wait to get caught up and put some of my new stuff out there! Ano equipment brings a whole new level of fun 😆
Wait, are you doing your own anodizing? It looks amazing! I particularly like the look of the black with red shield.
