I got potentially scammed by Rekrapmij Rekrapmij

Here is what happened. I will be concise but do not hesitate to ask for clarification or proofs. I have screenshots of everything.

I was looking for a Busse knife and I found the one I wanted on eBay (https://ebay.us/m/kPfkHs) for 280$. I contacted the seller to negotiate. His account on eBay Cloudie2 has been active for years and the reviews are great. He tells me to go on Blade forum and gives me his account name.

His account on blade forum has great reviews like on eBay. The same knife is for sale on blade forum. We negotiate publically. We agree to 230$ via F&F. We exchange email and I send him the money via PayPal. He acknowledges having the money and a day after sends me a legitimate tracking number with USPS 9500114864706037765067

I received the "package" today but it is an empty envelope.

I know that the community discourages F&F but I have done it hundreds of times on Facebook without any issues.

PayPal won't cancel the transaction (obviously).

If anyone knows the guy I would like you to contact him. Maybe he has issues lately. I don't want to make drame. I'll just be happy to get my money back.

Thanks in advance for your help and don't hesitate if you need proofs or screenshots. I have everything from PayPal, Gmail, eBay and blade forum. He hasn't deleted anything either.

I note that his screen name spelled backwards is "Jim Parker". Does that ring a bell with anyone? S SimonLG , was that the seller's name?

ETA, I just found mention of a Jim Parker in a thread post from 2019 in which he was called a scammer. I wonder if it's the same guy. Or maybe this seller has a demented sense of humor.

He’s a Jim Parker. He puts it on his compliance notes

The famous Jim Parker died some years ago. He once owned WR Case, started what is now Bear and Sons, had his own brand of knives made in Japan, and had a colorful and storied career as a knife trader. There were stories about his horse trading deals for knives.

Here is a thread in which Bernard Levine discusses Jim Parker.

A coincidence then I guess. Thanks for the info.

His name on PayPal and Gmail was James "Jim" Parker. It seems like I was legitimately scammed....

Or you got screwed by USPS. It does happen.
I must admit that it is not 100% impossible. Maybe someone opened the envelope and taped it shut afterwards? It didn't look obviously tempered with though.

If it is a scam it is quite the elaborate one. He still sent an envelope with his PoBox address. Maybe it would be just to gain time? But why not erasing the thread?

A photo of the packaging, showing the address, postage paid, and condition would be helpful.

And let's give the seller a chance to respond before assuming "scammer".

And... what condition was it in? Ripped at all?
There was some transparent tape at the opening side so tempering cannot be 100% ruled out but I would think that it is improbable. The envelope was still in pretty good shape.

I have pictures and videos of all of that. Should I rename my thread? What would be appropriate? Alleged scammer?
