Just a quick shout out to all those who are in the path of this terrible storm that is bearing down on the east coast of the USA. We hope it all works out ok for you all and you're all safe and sound.

Thoughts and all things positive from us in Oz.

We're ready.

Today I cleaned out the gutters, filled our vehicles' tanks, tested one of my smaller generators, stocked up on 50gal. of gas, charged a battery, went grocery shopping, stacked about 2 weeks worth of firewood for our wood stove under our lower porch.

Unless a tree falls on our home, mother nature ain't got nuthin on me. ;)

Prepped my RV, fueled, propaned, water, packed it with food...

oh, wait, i'm in Arizona.

That was for the Zombie apocalypse, or the upcoming election, or whatever.

Not making light of the storm, really, have some people on the coast, and we will be praying for EVERYONE in her path, and i hope most have the common sense of emt to be prepared.

i suspect most who frequent this forum, will.

I ALMOST fell out of my chair there...

...common sense and my name don't often find themselves in the same sentence like that! :D

But yeah, we are getting the worst and almost immediate direct hit as soon as this thing hits land (eastern PA).

I also checked my roof, organized my freezer (to minimize temp. loss if having to snatch something out of it real fast if keeping the food frozen for a day or two with minimal power), and did a bunch of other last minute checks.

We are supposed to start seeing wind pickup and rain in a couple hours. It'll only get worse from there. My station has extra crews on standby because we know it could get very VERY ugly. But my first priority is my family. If they are safe I'll lend a hand.

Thanks

I spent 14 hours today getting around 200,000 lbs worth of generators moving up to about 80 different places from Maryland to Maine, and almost as much yesterday. Its starting to flood out here only a few feet above sea level but the farmland has fantastic drainage.

Hang in there brother

Thanks, Rob & gang!

I'm not looking forward to it, but I'm as ready as I'm gonna be...so bring it. Anyone got any D-cell batteries? LOL. ;) Apparently, a lot of folks have bought D-cell Mag lights since Irene. :D

Hang tight, folks! See ya on the other side. :)

Well I just got back from picking up a few odds and ends (luxuries).

Just because I was curious and it didn't cost more than a buck or two for the gas...I drove around to a few grocery stores and a wal-mart.

The grocery stores were pretty bare when it came to the staples (butter, bread, milk, etc). However, at Wal-Mart, I thought people we going to start brawling in the isles!! You could feel the tension everyone was experiencing. The water was gone. Candles were gone. And the line at the ONE register they had open was into the second set of isles deep. You'd think they'd open another register...wait...nevermind, I forgot we were talking Wal-Mart here...

I'm glad I have my own preps and a water filter that'll let us turn rain, river, or pretty much any water into drinking water...for TEN YEARS! That and my wood stove (heat, light, cooking) may come in VERY handy in the next week or two.

I experienced that at the Wegmans on Friday. I knew that I wasn't the early bird or anything, but I was surprised that folks were actually taking this seriously enough to be already crowding that store. Still fairly decent stocked shelves, but all the favorites gone and no D-cell batts. I got what I thought I'd need and split for the gas station.

Today I had to run out and pick up my new glasses. Figured while I was out, I should beat the rush for ice after power goes out and cram a 16 lb. bag in the freezer now, just in case. Stopped first to top off the gas tank and waited 3 deep in a Wawa gas line. Luckily I didn't need much. Went for ice and C-cells (after remembering that I had a Mag light that took 'em) and surprisingly, the local Giant was still fairly well stocked so I grabbed a basket and snagged some more stuff, including the last 4 pack of C's (Glad I also have a few Surefires and a decent supply of CR123's on hand). The store was loaded with people. Drove past it at 9:30 tonight and it's still loaded. Bet they're pretty wiped out by now and the folks much more tense. I don't do the case of water thing either. Got a simple brita pitcher, a pack of filters and a BUNCH of tough water jugs... Filter & fill, filter & fill. ;):D

What kind of water filter do you have? I do want a better one for the "rougher" water and could use a tip on something reliable like yours for future situations. :)

I mobilize out of my home in NE Ga tomorrow for Baltimore.

I am a Senior Project Director for a National Disaster Recovery/ Emergency Services Firm.

This storm looks to be as serious as they are warning, so I hope those that plan to do very little are quite prepared for the ramifications.

I will most likely to be up in the region with a very large convoy and operational command to include alot of the most widely needed supplies.

Should anyone need anything, even simply advise or consultation, please shoot me an email. Kbrown@interstaterestoration.com.

Be safe, smart and solid.

Klark

Stay safe, stay smart and all my best to positive outcome to any and all in the storm's reach.

Wait...Wegman's, Wawa, and Giant? Where are you?? Because it is sounding an awful lot like you are in my area (ABE/LV).

As for the filter, it is the Katadyn Pocket. The Brita will do fine for sediment in already filtered water. But if the SHTF and you are dealing with potentially infected (bacteria-wise) water...ceramic laced with silver is the way to go. They have MUCH cheaper ones but I wanted the aluminum body because I tend to be rough with things. Sort of like paying for Busse's or Cold Steel when a wal-mart cheapie would do.

EDIT: Here is a cheaper model that'll filter out the main things to worry about...

If you head up the road to Cabelas they may still have them. I wouldn't bother calling as I'm sure they are more swamped than right after Obama got elected and the gun counter looked like the floor at the stock exchange...

I'm south of you. Exton, Chester Co. :) Cool & thanks! I'll add that Katadyne Pocket to my prep needs list. I definitely hear ya about the limitations of the Brita. I fill up what I can before storms/ heavy rains have a chance to foul up tap water since I'm hooked in. LOL, that's what I'm doing now while watching a little NCIS. Since it's just me and a few cats, even 20gal of drinking water will get me through all but the worst for at least 7-10 days assuming 2+ gal. a day without rationing down further. The bathtub will get filled tomorrow before things get nasty for all other non drinking tasks...washing, use for flushing a toilet, etc. Got a shower stall in the other bathroom so I can bring a bucket in there for washing, so I can hold the tub's worth almost indefinitely without mucking it up. Of course, since it is tap water, I could drink it, but I'd rather the portable filtered 20gal. So far, I've never had to take it that far, but no point not preparing when all I have to do is pull the plug to release it. ;)

10-4 on the location.

As for the water, I was going to suggest the same thing with the tub. Personally, I'm regretting not getting my water collection barrel(s) connected over the summer. This would have been the PERFECT time to see how things work. But I suppose I can always remove part of the spout and use a garbage can for now. Crude, but with the pocket filter it'll still give us drinking water if worst came to worst.

Another cool thing about my wood stove is that if the water lines are screwed up, we can still heat water up and then use the cheap $10 camping shower bag we bought to shower off.

But again, we'll see what this storm brings us before considering luxuries.
