Sandy

I just cleaned out the leaves from the gutter on my neighbor's porch - I live in a rowhouse and get problems with water in my basement from run-off from the front of my neighbors' houses. The result is that the water is now running through the downspout, rather then spilling out of the front of the gutter, but in the process I've discovered that the neighbor also has a leak in the downspout pipe and so the water is now being delivered even closer to my basement

Oh well, only two more days of rain to go.

Central CT here checking in... Governor closed highways to trucks at 11:00 and to all traffic at 1:00. I'm still at work, but we're told to head on home now. There is concern about very large storm surge in western Long Island Sound.

Baton down the hatches guys. She's a big storm and the pressure dropped another 3 MB down to 943. Lowest pressure on record to hit this far noth and expected to stregthen a little more before landfall.

THe back end is going to get one heck of a blizzard which in itself is another hazard all together.

Be safe.

Smoke and prayers for all imacted by this storm.

Checking in from SE PA. So far so good...but this isn't close to what's expected tonight. Stay safe, everyone! :)

Thanks Rob and everyone for your thoughts! I am in a mandatory evacuation zone; about 100 yards from a tributary of the raritan river in central New Jersey. Even though it's low tide the water is several feet above full moon high tide mark.
I am gonna ride it out. My power doesn't go out (in the 4 years i've been here). Suezq and my cars are on higher ground only about 150' away, and i have scads of supplies. (handle of Tito's and papers)
Wish me luck!

stay safe you guys and gals.

Still just windy in NYC. AMC Fearfest is where it's at right now. "Flight of the Living Dead: Outbreak On A Plane" is so awesome!

Beer stockpile is solid and groceries are stocked. So far, so good

You're in NYC now??? Till when?

Hey hey, Gary. Yeah, trip was just gonna be a couple of days but flight was delayed from Monday to Thursday. I'll pm you.

The World Meteorological Organization really dropped the ball when they failed to name the largest tropical storm/hurricane to hit us in decades, which also happens to land on the letter "S"...... SLAYER..... instead of Sandy.

Oh well... I say bring it. Living in the mountains and driving a 4x4 has its perks. :D Thanks for your thoughts Rob. I too hope all the silly lowlanders around me fair well through all this.

After this storm is over, Pennswoods is being renamed Pennsbush & Shrub. :D

In the Western NC mountains, it's just been blowing snow all day. Not much accumulation yet, but are supposed to get a good bit by Wednesday or Thursday.

Just the opposite aaaa. The lower the pressure in the "eye", the stronger the circulation and winds.

Aye, the lower the air pressure, the stronger the winds since the air molecules will be blown around instead of "weighing down" on the earth

Also, the lower the pressure, the greater the storm surge as the lessened pressure allows the ocean to bubble up under the storm
