Saw the Ti Millitary at the Blade show today.

I agree 100% with what you said, if they wanted these knives secret, why take them to Blade to a Public event! Just does not make sense to me.

RickJ

That question has already been answered. Because of Spyderco's design philosophy, a lot of their knives have to be held to be appreciated. Looking at the picture isn't a good indicator.

I don't buy it, I usually buy my knives online, because well most sporting goods stores don't carry the full spyderco line so well I don't buy that you have to have it in your hand, for example the Tero tuf Millie, handle shape is the same just a different material as far as I can see.

This is my thoughts, spyderco has the right to have a concept model and decide at a later date to produce it or not, Why not use blade as a way to get customer feedback on a knife to include via the internet wether it is a person taking shots or TazKristi doing a video with Doug Ritter like she did, I think last year, so we can get a look and give our thoughts on new knives or possible knives. I used the Detroit Auto show for an example, how many concept cars are put out there each year to get consumer feedback on! before even thinking about making it!

Let's compare cars to knives!

OK, let's not. I hope knives don't flame out the way the auto makers have. Maybe their business model isn't such a good idea to emulate. In any case, concept cars are never meant to be built, they aren't test beds as much as advertising for certain elements that may be integrated into later models.

The Spyderco knives at Blade are going to be built, but with changes based in part on handling. Over-publicizing through a partially successful medium like internet pictures is just not helpful, from their own experience. Too many questions about elements that the actual handling may have already eliminated.

Not the same at all as buying online. By the time they hit the internet stores, you can see many pictures, read reviews here, ask the reviewers questions. Spyderco is not looking for months of desultory comments on a model they can refine in a couple of days on hands-on feedback.

Esav,

Good points. One more point, if lots of pictures and information about prototypes or pilot models becomes available online, suddenly it is much easier for rip-off companies to copy the designs and produce them.

How happy is Spyderco going to be if some mystery made-in-China company starts producing some of their prototypes months before they make the decision to produce them.

Given all the problems with clones and rip-offs these days, people need to respect Spyderco's decision to preview the designs for a limited audience. They want feedback, sure, but they don't want universal exposure.

I will continue to buy Spyderco Knives and enjoy their new models no matter what! And I don't mind if I don't see or handle a knife until well, I see it! you can only see it when you see it! One last point, I am fixing to buy both the T2 and the RockLobster, I have not put them in my hand, why, well because most sporting goods stores don't carry them or at least the full line. I could travel several hours to a knife store I guess but with my work just not going to happen, so well I purchase online from what I like the looks of, I guess what I am trying to say is yes pictures online help spyderco sales. In fact I purchased 95% of my Spyderco knives online.

I'm in the same bind. We don't have stores around here and even the 2 New York knife shows don't have Spyderco or any production knives, strictly custom. :thumbdn:

Without Bladeforums, the temptation level would be way down!.

You can always return a knife bought from a reputable online dealer, if it doesn't work for you. The cost would be the postage both ways at most. I've never done it with a perfect knife (only those with some cosmetic issue) but all most any dealer will allow you to return for a full refund or exchange.

We don't have an ETA at this time. Sorry.

Kristi

Kristi I'm warning you. Every month it's delayed I'll put another one on preorder. :D

Or you could order from dealers that examine the knife by hand to avoid those issues. ;)

Wow i am going to have to get one, already have some Carbon fiber for the non lock side. :D

I would love to see a ti paramilitary as well. The Ti Military looked real sweet, can't wait!

so, why were the pics of the Ti Millie removed?

you know, the one already announced
the one using the exact same blade and handle shape
the one using the twenty year old lock/handle design of a Ti framelock
the one that looks almost exactly like someone took a pic of a regular Millie and changed the color of the handle to gray, and added a little different jimping to the lock release.

what are we worried about being stolen from those pics?

Had the pictures remained, you wouldn't have 5 pages of subsequent discussion. Hype is all part of the game.

"Ooooh folks, guess what I saw at blade?"

I think the pics being removed has a bit more to do with the priciple of not having asked for permission to show them.

Having seen the pics before they were removed I can tell you the Ti Military looked just like a Military  shocking stuff, I know.

Spyderco is not into it. I just checked out their home forums and it's a wasteland as far as Blade show goes. Here's a Blade thread over there and the naughty pix here are commented on.

If you want to see pictures of Blade, the Busse Combat forum has quite a few pix.

I highly recommend the Rat Cutlery Blade thread too. ;)

I love seeing possible future Spydercos as much as the next guy but I have a hard time wrapping my head around this disbelief some folks have as to why the pics were pulled.

1) Someone took the pictures.
2) A Spyderco representative has said the understanding was they would not be put out for public view.
3) That understanding was, for whatever reason, not respected.
4) Spyderco then moderated the thread, in their forum, so as to remedy the problem.

Whether what's in the pictures is super sensitive secret material or not is kinda beside the point when they shouldn't have shown up here in the first place. We can always wait to see what appears at the next IWA show, where some pictures are allowed and then posted for all to see. The wait won't kill ya. In the meantime, folks who were there can talk about what they saw to keep the discussions going.
