Scenario-Based Training: Commercial Plane Crash

I missed the obvious, shelter. Im sure there would be an abundance of great materials for shelter building.

You have to be very carefull when approaching a type A controll freak. Grease thir ego, and word your concerns so that they come off as thier ideas and make them still keep up the image they want. And if that doesnt work, hostile takeover lord of the flies style!!!:p

JW, good stuff. Let's assess as amny items as we can, to maximize our knowledge.

Also, the skin of the plane is aluminum, and the hydraulic lines are aluminum tubing...

Aluminum, when ground into a powder, ignites at 5000 deg F (like magnesium), and is stronger than steel pound for pound.

Fortunately, jet fuel is hard to ignite. Yay for that.

Okay, get everyone who will listen to move some 100 yard or so away, finding a good clump of trees with adequate drainage. Tell whoever will listen to move anyone who can't move themselves.

I'm going to ignore the type A assholes for the moment unless they are deliberately hindering anything I do. If they are, I'll figure out something. Go fiind food, look for a road, whatever. There's any number of ways to do this, but it's doable. Hell, I organize 300 odd hippies once a year to put on a festival, and I'm the only non "hippie" organized person to handle the logistics.

*someone* on the survivor list will have at least a first aid course, and probably more. Whoever it is does triage. Any adult or older children who can are going to be assigned nursery. (Having something todo is important) Anyone willing to do so is going to go with me at that point and find 1: lighter 2: cutting tools 3: shelter pieces. Anyone else who isn't finding themselves a job is policing the campground and making bedding piles of needles or whatnot.

1: something will turn up. If nothing else, one of the crew will have matches. Heaven forbid, but I can do the bow drill if it needs doing. My luggage will have a firesteel and a decent knife or three anyhow.

2: axe in cockpit, knives in luggage. this is going to be important, I' not just feeding the forum topicality. There's a lot fo shelter to build and so on.

3: wreckage, baggage covers, whatever. Not the lifeboats, they have another use.

Once I get fire going, everyone is going to get that animalistic feel better going on. Then it's water. - lifeboats are the collection devices of choice.

By this time the plane would either have burned big (unlikely, actually), or it's going to be safe to comb the wreckage. But I also assume it's dark. Raid the galley. no sense rationing food, get everyone anything they can eat now.

type A assholes are going to be dealt with at this time. Compromise is preferable, but I'll do what I need to get through, including lie about background. (E5? try O3. Whatever it takes to back them down). When possible, I'll enlist them to Do Something.

Explain and get concensus on the first rules: 1: no negatives. This is not the time to dis, gripe, moan, or backstab anybody. NO NEGATIVE TALK about ANYONE. 2: Doing anything is going to be better than doing nothing or arguing, so we all need to DO. 3: explain basic foragables and food sources, water collection, instill some confidence. 4: explain the huddle- sleeping in groups makes it really hard to freeze if you get all your clothing and fabrics and brush together and stay close. 5: fire watch. This first night, just keep it going and keep it big. Drying wood needs to be cycled.

Most metals with an um on the end are flamable. That being said there are titanium parts also.

You could use sugar from the galley for wound treatment, as an emergancy fix for bleeding controll. However if diabetics are around it might be best to save it for them. Rubber from the tires would make a MEAN signal fire. You could use the alluminum to reflect heat to melt large quanities of snow for water, and fashion some sort of cooking gear.

Has to be some nondairy creamer on board. I would much rather use it for calories , but suspended in air it burns like grain dust. At night time it could be used as a signal .

Hmmm. I just read that a plane holds 30 gallons of potable water in the rear cargo hold. Good stuff!!

Koyote, I like how you think and agree with you.. I dont fly much at all so i forgot that i did see some Axes on a planes before... Do they still allow them... with some vesel to hold fuel you can make lanterns to help heat what ever shelter you build...carry some fuel in a bottle to always help start a fire or a signling fire...

Yeah, I wouldve never thought about the axe. Good stuff!

You could also use sheets of alluminum to build a fire reflector to reflect some of the lost heat.

What voltage does a plane use ??? is it 12-24-48???? There must be some light bulbs left that still work... A few of them at night time would be a great signel for miles... and they should also help working on dismantling the plane as long as possible with the cold

Christof,
Outstanding post!

This is a great thread - thank you for all the amazing contributions!

Keep 'em coming!

enough seat cushings and you got a very comfy bed for the cold... There should be plenty of blankets and cloths to keep everyone warm...
Im getting to like this thread alot now

keeping busy in days after that first night is important. with 30+ adults, a longhouse lodge isn't going to be out of the question. There's at least one axe on the plane, if I'm lucky there's someone like me packing a hatchet in luggage. (gotta figure out why I'd be flying, and a knife or survival related event is about the only thing I can think of. Family is all within west coast driving except my mother, but that would involve me doing demo of my work, too.)

Even with rain, wood is going to be fine for fuel, you can dry wood near the fire, split and keep a main fire going constantly.

I didn't mean to pass over the triage and medical care lightly, i'm just trying to limit response space.

Food becomes a problem early on, all I can say is that the likelyhood of an available firearm helps, I *can* make serviceable bows, and I've made and hunted with slingshots.

fall is going to be a less than ideal time for foraging, but should be doable. chokecherries and currants and whatnot are going to be crappy, but you may find some late ones. Juniper, mushrooms. Man, you picked a rough time of year for a non specialist. I'd be in heaven out here in the seirra or foothills.

superglue- incidentally, that's way up high on the list for medical use. As is clean clothing and tape.

Electric light should last days, maybe even weeks. Electricity is electricity, if you have the know how (I do, yay) just about anything will power flashlights for a while. laptops are really easy to cannibalize since they have the voltage conversion electronics needed for powering most any light bulb or LED you'll find.

If we're stuck for a month, I have to assume my HT and the plane's radios are irreparable. But in a general case I'd get an antenna WAY up and start boradcasting on 2m. I *do* travel with a portable directional loop, I should put the satellite data into my notebook so I can use that.

wait dont some pilots can \ do carry a firearm??? Now the only thing that would prevent rescue for a month is some realy bad weather.. so i guess that would be the main thing to worry about and its weather.....
