Scout knife callout!

I'm getting yet another turn in my collecting towards scouts.Never really collected specific patterns. If it's old it's for me, but I wouldn't mind collecting scouts.

Charlie - That Abercrombie & Fitch knife strikes me as a bit odd. The main blade tang stamp supposedly was last used in 1941, but the can opener is the design from Imperial that was patented in 1944, IIRC. Do you think it was made from old blade stock in the Ulster factory? Or was something replaced on this one, either the blade or the can opener?

Good question:eek:! Supposedly, the majority of Ulster stock was purchased in 1941, and the name was changed shortly after. As things lead into WWII, certainly no-one was throwing any steel away. Blade stocks were not likely wasted, I would wager. But you got me looking closely at this knife, and I don't see anything that tells me it has had a replacement blade; good job if it was done!?!
I think I will ask Dennis Ellingsen at OKCA. He could be the top utility knife guy! He's written can opener articles, and has a huge collection.

I wish now I had gotten the traditional knife, but as a teenager this buck was way too cool to pass up.

That one with the philips-driver Waynorth posted is great. I bet it's a very handy placement of the driver. This thread makes me wish I'd bought some of the gorgeous scout knives I've seen at garage sales and bargain bins. Sure they usually had worn/broken/useless blades but but I already have a knife anyways. I'm gonna keep my eye open and try and make a collection of beautiful bottle openers toplay with.

Why not collect bottle openers, neitron? Can openers might be even more interesting though. There's one below that kind of scares me a bit. I think I see a blood stain. . . .never mind:eek:! Odd blades can reveal a lot of history.
I collect punches (and knives with 'em of course). Could be interesting!
Here are the three knives I managed to find on my trip through New Mexico. Not spectacular, but interesting. All scouts, or scout types.

I suspect the Kent was made by Camillus, as the Can opener (shudder) matches Eric's!

Waynorth, that right-most knife looks like the offspring of a Camillus and a douk douk! :D

MG, it is quite a simple knife. The folded steel handle "torques" or twists as you open it, providing the spring to hold it open and closed.

I became a Boy Scout in 1954. glennbad's third-pictured, Imperial BSA Model 1996, was the the-current offical knife, and I soon had one hanging from my belt (I quickly learned how impractical that method of carry was.).

I few years later, the official knife changed to your 3 O'Clock, glennbad's fourth-pictured (same BSA model No.), so I had to have one of those. My paperboy money bagged one for Christmas 1958.

I held on to those first two somehow. I have dozens now, but have never managed to get a New York Knife Company example. All I see are rough or go for mucho, mucho $$$$.

It is stunning how greatly the pre-WWII models exceed the post WWII models in quality, which reached an alltime low with the Ulster USA models of the 70's and 80's -- sloppy fit, soft steel, weak snap.

Found this one at a flea market in Wabasha Minnesota, Home of Grumpy Old Men

Nice one Tracker!! Don't see many of those in pearl, in fact I've been on the lookout for one of those. Great to see this thread revived, here's another seldom seen one, an Ulster Sea Scout:

This one was done by Schrade to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee, Ulster tang stamped:

Ain't that somthing !!! I've been looking for a sea scout for years. since I collect riggers. Maybe we could get them cloned and trade.

Great thread! I'm just staring to pick up a few slippies again and had decided to collect some scout knives. One I really want was a basic scout design with jigged black synthetic scales. I believe it was marketed as an Eagle Scout knife, though it only had a BSA emblem on the side. BSA logo and whatnot on the blade. I would imagine it was a Camillus, but I don't believe it had a bail. I got it as a cub scout as my prize for selling Christmas wreaths back in the late 80's or very early 90's. I'd REALLY like to have tis exact knife again.

Camillus made two "Deluxe" models without a bail and with a plastic handle that looked like jigged bone. They both had five tools - a Phillips SD being the one added to the customary four. They both were BSA Model 1046. The one for 86-91 had carbon steel tools. The one for 92-07 had SS tools. All Camillus four-blade standard Boy Scout utility knives seem to have had bails. Both show up on eBay.
