SDFK is Glorious

IMO it feels more like a short chopper than a large knife, especially when you choke back on the handle.

I recall a tip from years ago in the Busseverse to aid in chopping when choking back on a shorter blade. Tie a short lanyard from the end of the handle ending with a ball or fat knot or rubber stopper. You can get two or three fingers on the handle with your pinky backstopped for support.

What is the balance like ? Seems some prefer the basic to the signature series with skeletonized handles and blade swedge. Trying to decide with version to get . Leaning towards the heavier basic model

It's balanced like a knife and less like a chopper, in my humble opinion. Mine balances just a HAIR north (*blade-side) of where the index finger sits when the knife is gripped properly. "Perfect", in my very humble opinion.

It's very coincidental that you posted, as I almost posted this, this morning...

I missed the first offering of the SDFK, as my "work" schedule is all over the place and I was asleep when they went dropped. Man, I was fuming. I've wanted a Carothers' for a long time. However, I have so many fixies that a UF2 woulda' been horribly redundant. So, when I found that there was going to be a second drop, I knew I was going to do everything in my power to get one. (*I am also blessed enough to have many large/hard-use blades. But, honestly, I could never have enough, and there is no such thing as "redundant" in that genre)

When the second drop was announced, I noted that there were going to be five "Signature" SDFKs. The smug braggart in me craved the signature version, but I knew that my chances (*35 vs five) were better on the "Basic". I knew what the basic looked like, but had no idea what the signature model looked like when I took part in the sale.

After the 20-second sale, I knew what both looked like. And man, I can tell you, BEYOND THE SHADOW OF A DOUBT, that I am so happy I wound-up with a "Basic". I woulda' been elated with either, but the basic is more my style. For my uses, it is PERFECT. I love the fact that the thickness runs almost completely from bow to stern. (*with the small exception of the tip) Again, "PERFECT".

Your mileage may vary. Happy hunting.

*I love having duplicates. And, if by some miracle I ever get the chance to buy another, I'll try to buy TWO more. I'm hoping that Nathan and Jo will offer a "pre-order" on these at some point.

My hanging loop throws balance off a tad but it only weighs a few grams. This will give you a visual idea. Alone Alone nailed it, my finger is on the forward most mounting screw and would be a touch more forward without my loop.

I believe that TGULB has a 7 3/4” blade. Looks like the SDFK might have more cutting edge though due to the Busse’s massive choil. I no longer have a TGULB for comparison. I think they are close in weight also.

Thank you for your response ! I have the behemother, my first CPK knife and became a instant fan of their work . I got a Aaron Gough resolute knife attached to its sheath . Makes a great combination. Anyway , once I saw pictures of the super duty I knew I had to get one . Working on it. I'm going for the Basic

Just compared: cutting edges are within 32nd of being the same. TGULB is about 1-1/8" longer OAL. Balance point on the TGULB is right at the front of the scale. The CPK is about 1.5 oz heavier but when you consider it is .25 thick vs .20 thick on the TGULB, the specs are admirable.

I took a size comparison pic of it the other night, but wasn't sure anyone would be interested. Anyhoo, here is the SDFK with my favorite and most trusted knife...

I know the top knife is "just a run-of-the-mill 1095 TOPS" and that guys who buy Carothers probably love knives that are much more prestigious. Despite that, my 107s have seen me through every rough or bad night I've ever had outdoors. I've used (*and beaten) them relentlessly and never had any issues. They've always been there for me, from the time I've left the house until the time I've safely returned.

I tried to line-up the edges so that the size comparison was immediately evident/obvious. I think it may show why I gravitated to the "Basic" SDFK so quickly.

Not me, I like TOPS knives a lot. Had an operator 7 and it was amazing, except for the insane Busse like thickness. If they made it in 1/4 stock, I’d never would’ve gotten rid of it. Got the Prather War Bowie and it’s a great production knife.

Made in America by a proudly patriotic company, what's not to like. Not that all their designs are up my alley but this rides in my field bag and has served me well..
