Sebenza 31 Lock Rock?!

Howdy all, first time posting and first time CRK owner. I have a Sebenza 31 on order with black micarta... Have I made a mistake? Should I switch the order to the 21?

I've watched several YouTube unboxings and reviews and this doesn't seem to be a huge issue for them, but I'm unsure after seeing this thread.

I'd cancel the order and get a 21 while you still can if it was me. You can get a 31 later on if you want to.

Cancel and get a 21. Nobody needs that kind of stress and worry in their life right now. The 21 is a proven design, the 31 thus far is not.

CRK Newbie here. I got a small Sebenza 31 last week and loved it. So, ordered a Macassar Large 31.

In reading thru the majority of posts on this thread, I tried to see if i have any movement in these two knives. I can’t feel any movement. The small has a birthdate at the end of April and the L31 has May 12th as the birthdate.

In my terminology, i am not seeing/hearing any side to side movement or vertical movement by putting pressure on the spine. Either I am really lucky or I don’t know how to check. But right now, I’m very happy. The lock up on the L31 is about 66-75%. Lock up on the small is quite a bit less.

Both are somewhat stiff to open. I took down the small today and cleaned and re-lubed it. It is a easier to open, definitely not flip-able. I saw no evidence of any loctite or teflon tape in the small. Will probably tear down the large tomorrow or most likely on Friday.

I need to create a imgur account and post photo’s. But if anyone wants me to check anything, let me know.

I would guess that most of the 31’s wont have side/side. :) Im pretty sure my micarta was overlooked in that department.
Glad you are happy! :)

As an absolute knife newbie, I have gravitated towards CRK. CRK seems to have made his name through legendary tolerances. Its fascinating to see this Sebenza 31 lock rock thing play out in the CRK community this past few months. Has this ever happened before with some of his prior knife releases? Or is this just a 2020 kind of thing?

What concerns me a bit is that there doesn't seem to be a lot of consistency. Some have a little, some a lot, some none. They seem to be all over the place. If it is normal, it should be the same on all but the defective knives. Do those with none have a defective knife :).

I wanted to pick up a large insingo and had decided to be patient and wait for the 31's to drop later this year but ended up changing my mind and got a 21 instead. My large drop point 21 is just flawless and rock solid and honestly I think canting the clip on it would create a major hot spot for me.

I think I will grab a small 31 insingo once they fix this issue and make the switch to s45vn. I'm sure there will still be some flex there just due to the nature of the ceramic ball creating a pivot point on the tang of the blade but I think there should be less noticeable flex on the small due to the shorter lockbar, plus they should hopefully work out the kinks by the time they are manufacturing the small insingos.

Also, I think the small sebenza benefits more from the canted clip than the large. The clip location on the small 21 is closer to the edge of the handle than it is on the large 21, creating more of a hot spot (like it did on the 25, which has the clip closer to the edge of the handle than the 21).

Got my Sebenza (the 31 that got cancelled and turned in to 21) today and I did't believe they can be sooo smooth out of the box. Zero play when open and allmost free dropping when lockbar tension is relieved. You can allso open it the way you are not supposed to open Sebenza .The lock up is pretty early... about 50%. So happy that I got one before they are gone. Maybe 31 later if they get them consistently right.

After this entire tread and all everyone has said, it really surprises me that CRK hasn’t come out and said anything else about this other than the initial Instagram post....

maybe they will never try to change this because they aren’t interested or it would be too costly and not a big enough issue.

The lack of consistency in the test results is because of the lack of consistency in the testers and the test protocol.
^^^. Exactly. It’s like asking “how blue is the sky?”

We see a variety of “issues”, because people have a variety of opinions, and a variety of expectations.

My best guess at this point, is that in CRK’s mind, the knife is suitable for its intended uses, and they can’t make everyone happy all the time. I still doubt we’ll see any changes.

Are they aware of this thread? Management hasn't been on in some time-maybe back to Idaho Made. Some of the workers were members, but that too has passed.

Actually the last time may have been after Chris's departure. Not to announce it, but a reorganization in the customer service dept. It was very nice back in the day when they regularly participated, but we all know they are busy. So it was perfectly acceptable that they only jumped in when needed. I think this would qualify. Give their opinion and the reason why. At least in the past they had no problem justifying their actions.

I have had my 31 for two weeks now, I have had zero issues with it. I don’t know if that helps. Came out smooth, unlike some of my 21s that were a little stiff at first. Love it would recommend getting it.

I actually think they should be removed from the Manufacturer's Forums.

Isn't there rules to the manufacturer so that they have to somewhat interact on the forums?

I don't know. I know they have to supply the moderator. I hope they don't close the forum. It would be better with them, but I enjoy it as it is, and can still gain a lot of knowledge.

Yeah, I don't want it closed either and as there is no other place to put it. I guess it should stay where it is.

I actually thought there was a subforum here for manufaturers that were completely unhosted, but there isn't.
