Sebenza Spydie Hole Mod

@rexromic

First off, im a huge CRK fan...as you probably already know. I respect and have found a lot if your posts very helpful. I actually own a Ti-lock you previously owned. Lol.
I have to disagree and say that i don't disapprove of CRK mods. They must be well done. There are so many CRK's out there now, and personalizing one is in my humble opinion, ok. After all, i work hard for my money, bought a sebenza, and moded it to my preferences. :) hope we can still be friends. :)
20+ CRK's, 2 moded, and all the rest original BNIB!!
No disrespect intended!! :D

And on topic...i like the hole, looks well done, and gets rid of the thumbstud. Id do it. No stud in the way of my cutting chores.

I thought I was the only one who wanted to do this. I’ve grown to despise thumb studs.

Now, if only there was a guy out there who was willing and able to wave mod one.

You have to send the knife in for a blade change. I’d bet they wouldn’t touch it. They’ve turned away mods made on the slabs.

I don't think they would have a problem re-blading it as long as it is just the hole and no modification to the lockup. I don't see how it differs from screwing up the blade sharpening or snapping a tip prying, but of course they get the final say and the only way to be 100% sure is to ask them. Smartest way to go about it would be to get the 2nd blade fitted before the project IMO.
You also probably could send it in without any blade at all.
They might not work on other features of the knife , with that blade on it. That starts to fall in to a legal hassles of sending knives out that aren't up to their specs.

REK Knives REK Knives could make a killing here.
I'm considering trying .. Its an expensive mod for me to mess up bit wise though, as it's almost $80 for the drill bit and I would need to probably mill a flat spot first .I do like the looks and function though... There are other options as well other than those little needle tipped things they put on at the factory :)

I can see it being the case if there is a lock up issue after some dunce threw the lock scale in a tumbler or some heavy acid wash for example that might have screwed with the lock face. But if hole in the blade voids the entire warranty (and factory spa/sharpening for the matter) they should be ashamed.
Thats akin to your car losing warranty for different rims or new seats.
They can be very precise about their warranty/spa coverage. I sent them my 21 on which the frames had been Scotch-Brited. I wanted them to blast the frames back to normal, which is a usual part of their spa treatment. They refused because the frames had been "modified outside their shop." They sharpened the blade, though.

I had to laugh and shake my head. That seemed a bit pitiful. :p

They started refusing those a few years ago. Previously they would do them. I am not sure but I believe it creates some sort of problem specific to their spraying operation. Has to do with the rounding of the edges.
Either that or they just got tired of people scotch briting knives and asking them to fix it.:)

Will you change the thumbstud on customers knives?

I have a feeling this was it. :)

Actually, I don't really believe that it is either of those explanations but this is not really the place for me to spout my CRK conspiracy theories. :D

I am getting off topic, but I did a little research
Supposedly 2 reasons for them not to re-blast some scotch brite mods.
1. it can create rounded edges that don't fit their machinery well
2. it is out of spec and they can't create the crisp edge it originally had. Some buyer down the line may think it came out of the factory like that.
Now back to the original subject of Spydie Holes

If you have the equipment to do it correctly and it’s your knife, why not?

We had a member here who bought a brand new large Sebenza and put a bottle opener on it which coincidentally looked and operated similarly to an Emerson Wave. ;) Then he had the gall to give it away on BFC.

He did a poll first to see if the masses wanted him to leave it alone or give it a bottle opener. The fanboys dogpiled on that one.

I have a lot of respect for him havin’ the cajones to touch a near $500 knife.

I tried to win the Sebemerson but alas I didn’t. Still I can carry my Birthday ‘Benza with the Diamond Plate CGG and today that’s just what I did :).

Did you do the work yourself?
I did not. I sent it to a buddy from IG. He has done a small 21, a 25, and my large 21. They all look amazing. Unfortunately, he isn't doing anymore high end hole mods because it's too stressful. I don't blame him. I wouldn't want to be responsible for potentially screwing up $400+ knives either.

Sure, that is a semi simple mod - although if it's a double lug then the factory studs will have to be destroyed to remove. The ones in the pics above are Ti though and can be re-anodized blue if one would wish.

Nice! CRK mods...CRK prices...

CRK's are spot on from the factory in almost every area so I actually haven't done a ton of modding to them. I have reground some over the years, switched out thumb studs, and have some now that I will be sculpting the forward half of the scales.

For a thumb stud swap it would depend if single or double lug, you can email for a price/details if you wish I don't like to post prices publicly if I can help it =)
