Seller and Buyers - Read This

I've run Internet Explorer and Google Chrome, and never seen a problem with VM. Strange.

However, that's my suggestion, not Spark's. He put email in the rules: sellers have to enable it. Frankly, if people won't use a commonly available tool like email, I lose sympathy.

fixer, can you see any of your VMs? I can read them.

Personally, I hate PMs and wish people would use email in writing to me. PMs have Inbox and Sent instead of coherent conversations like VMs. VMs drawback is that, like forum threads, anyone can read them, so we need something else if it's private information. Email.

ok, my fault... i was trying to get there by clicking on User CP, and not by clicking on my name. mea culpa. just seems like a strange way to get there.

what can i say? this is the only place i've seen the VM system, everywhere else (at least the places i've been) gives everyone access to PM.

and, unfortunately, not all sellers have email turned on. doesn't make any sense to me, but... not all do. i can't even remember who it was that i was trying to contact that didn't have it on.

oh, IE doesn't work on Linux, and on a Mac you have to go back to IE 5.2.3. (which means no tabs)

Firefox runs on Win, Mac and Linux, and so apparently does Chrome.

buuut, it was a pilot error problem, not a browser one, and i can admit that.

yes, i FINALLY figured out my problem. i was looking for them under User CP, not by clicking on my name in a post.

Thank you moderators! I wondered how long it was going to take to address the clutter that has developed here lately. I have seen postings slip away to page 2 and 3 much too quickly and wondered if they ever got looked at. It seemed that a competition has developed to see who could keep their postings on top, especially on week-ends. As a grateful seller here for the past 5 years I am glad you addressed this problem.

On the topic of deleting the price after a sale, I know it is frustrating to buyers, but I think it is a legitimate thing for sellers to do. Otherwise, if they post another knife six months later with a price bump, maybe to reflect their increased skill level and/or cred, or if they have had to offer a big price drop to move a piece, they don't want to have to be chiseled by people saying "Hey, you sold this same knife six months ago for $50 less! I want that deal, too!"

you are so right!!!! Since they are putting sellers down to 2 posts on a page!

I thought this forum for to benefit sellers and buyers in the "For Sale" portion of this forum??????????

As a seller I find that a lot of the rules applying to that particular section are ridicilous. Also expecting a buyer to PAY for a membership to have permission to send a Private Message to sellers is assinine That the same as Paying for the priviledge of buying??? Gimme a break!
Not being able to post positive comments about a knife for sale does nothing but hurt the seller. Comments help the buyer decide . If a knife for sale has no comments from other craftsmen or potential customers a buyer tends to be leery. It appear nobody likes the craftman's work and nobody thinks the kinfe is good enough to comment about! Not allowing a seller to put up more than two posts per page is stupidly limiting. It's supposed to be a SELLING thread so sellers shgould be able to post whatever they have for sale, not limited by a specified number of postings per page
I do agree with the 72hr bump rule.
I sure appears that the owners and moderators of this forum DO NOT want this to be a place to benefit the craftsmen or their customers!!! This is my opinion and I believe it to be very true based on the rules about the Selling thread!!

And guess what? Sometimes sales come to me when I post "this is a great knife" on a knife previously sold and the maker of that knife makes another one some time later and contacts me directly.
I've had a similar experience. I commented on a sold knife saying how I'd like one if the maker did any more. The maker then contacted me and I not only ended up with a knife like the one that I missed, but got to pick my own handle materials.

I understand the desire to avoid the sort of posts that just say "nice knife" but I do think both sellers and buyers can benefit from a bit more communication than just "I'll buy it".

Still, I'll try to bide by the forum rules as intended by the admins and mods until/unless they decide differently.

I disagree with the rule of not allowing the seller to post the answer to a question immediately. Often the question is on the minds of more than the person who posted question. A PM to the question poster doesn't answer to the other potential buyers at large. Having to wait 72 hours to post the answer to the public after PM-ing the answer privately to the question poster is just an awkward way of going about it. It also looks, to people who are only buyers and not sellers and therefore are less likely to read the rules, as if the seller is avoiding the question. As a buyer I'd like to see questions answered in public.

You do not have to pay to use email. (You may mean PM? Private Message.)

I understand this is a problem, especially given the forum tradition. But we are trying to sell, not advertise a business. We have already suggested getting a forum OR posting a knife for discussion in the Gallery.

Not allowing a seller to put up more than two posts per page is stupidly limiting.

This is to give other sellers equal access to the first page. More than one knife can and should go in each of those posts.

I sure apears that the owners and moderators of this forum DO NOT want this to be a place to benefit the craftsmen or their customers!!!

You know that's not true.

We have the same situation on the Himalayan Imports forum, where Yangdu puts up the Deal of the Day, and members try to be first to email her to win one of them.

But if you don't get it, often she will email you back to say she has another she'll sell you at the same price. I got a beautiful Sgian Dubh that way, myself.

No, we don't want you putting it in the thread, but you could always email the maker yourself.

Good point, that's why we say the seller should answer all questions immediately -- by editing the answers into the original post.

That way, all the updated information, answers to questions, new pictures, and lowered prices will all be in one post, right on top for everyone coming to the thread to find, instead of having to scan down to see what's up.

It seems to me that there's a clear voice in this thread saying that the rules changes are generally fine except for the one disallowing discussion of the knives.Pposter after poster has come on to request that discussion remain open between makers and collectors.

I don't think it's too much to ask here. Discussion has always remained civil. It is a part of the makers sale area and should continue be allowed. The general populace seem to be very much in favor of keeping that part open.

So you're removing forum clutter by telling makers to start two threads, one in the gallery and a sale thread here?

That doesn't make any sense at all.

People, they are serious about the "COMPLIMENT" type posts.
I was given an Infration for posting a "Compliment" on a seller's
For sale post. I wondered to myself "WTF did I do wrong?" I can
Understand the whole clutter thing but come on. The same day I got
The infraction, I saw "compliments" a plenty as well as "WARNINGS"
A plenty from the mods. I'll be the example, it doesn't bother me, but
be consistent.. I just send my compliments via pm now!:D

here is a new thought I have on this issue . Eliminate the auto bump feature that comes with a post reply . Put the responsibility and the ability on the seller to bump the thread after the 72 hour period . It would be easy for the Mods. to monitor any abuse to the bumping rules just by checking the dates of the post on top of page 1 .

Great Idea Jack!! It should be up to the sellers to bump their own items.
Maybe the powers that be can visit that idea.
