seriously... knife bubble?

I paid 2000$ for a 6-700$ custom knife. I do not regret it at all. Waiting time on this maker is over 10 years, and the model I got is very very rare. If I keep the knife for 20 years that is 100$ a year. Is a 100$ a year so expensive? Not at all to me. I just sold all my knives and had over 2000$ so I didn`t loose any money. Bought knives, used them sold them and bought my absolute grail. Less is more for me. That way I can enjoy the tool to the fullest without being distracted by my other knives. That said the only bubble I can see is the Shirogorov one. One dealer has the monopoly on them and markeds them up like crazy.

I don't understand people getting upset over the prices of knives. If you won't pay it, don't pay it. Someone else might however. If you are talking Hinderer, Shirogorov, etc., they sell for what the market will buy them for. A year or so ago a 3.5" XM18 production spanto couldn't be had for less than $850.00. Since production has picked up a bit, you will be hard pressed to see them sell for more than $650.00 now (Stock).

I personally think the Hinderer bubble has burst. Just go look at the exchange. However, it's their money. Not mine. I'm content with my CQC-13, SnG, Swayback Jack and one off custom.

It's the Federal Reserve dagnabit: overinflating the money supply, creating a High End knife bubble just like they're creating a stock market bubble. Both bubbles will pop at the same time. So don't be caught with your pants down--if you've a mind to sell, do so while you can still get the high prices. :D

People pay a lot of money for certain stamps, comics, and dolls. At least a knife can be used if it's no longer considered "collectable". With that being said, every time I see a knife over $1000, I think of what kind of 1911 I could buy.

I forgot about the overpriced sprint run spyderco's.Once again ridiculous prices on production knives.

For me, this thread is the difference between an investor and a collector.

I never sell any of my knives. Price fluctuation is of no importance because I buy what I like to
either use or collect without being concerned about eventual worth as I have no interest in selling
anything. Some of my collection has appreciated in value, some has remained constant, some has
gone down. I simply don't care; I'm not getting rid of anything.

If you are looking at knives as investment I think there a lot of better things to throw your cash at.
Bubbles are only bubbles if they burst? Try telling that to a realtor.

$180 Spyderco PM2s being flipped for $800

$500 ZT 0888 being flipped for $1000+

$700 RJ Martin being flipped for $2200

$1000+ Mayo/Southard/Rexford etc being flipped for $3000+

It's at every level at this point. It's unsustainable, hence the bubble. A lot of people who are paying the inflated prices are going to be taking a serious hit soon.

If you are fortunate enough to win a lottery or go to a show and pick something up and decide to sell it later, there's no problem for making a small premium for your work or giving someone instant access to a knife.

Having sat through the smelly insanity of a Hinderer lottery, I'd be fine paying <$500 for a $385 knife, not $650+ just to not have to go through it again.

Where can I sell my PM2 for $800?

IKBS must be worth at least.... $200 extra! I'm sure it takes much longer to install :) And as for "tight tolerances" on overall fit, we know that is worth at least $400-$800... Then add in a "special clip" for say... $100-$200... Hell the markup shouldn't be any less than 500-1000% on any part or pieces, I mean this IS rocket science...

...and people are buying bling for their knives, wth??

But "seriously"... I know why there is this bubble-type behavior.. and I understand the basic economics behind it.. and I do agree with most everyone here; this comes down to consumer spending habits and very personal "needs/decisions".

I don't mind too much. I can wait a bit or find another quality knife... In the end, as with most markets, we will find a balance and begin to see some of the makers prices drop tremendously while others just a bit as people find new sparkly objects to covet and realize that many knives are not created equally great.

What is a fair going price? What the insane market will pay!

Now where is that $800 PM2! Apparently someone got took O_O

oharal, I clicked my PM notification, saw it was you, then the PM disappeared right before my eyes as I tried to write down your address. Apparently I'm not supposed to receive PM's unless it's from one of the principal's. Can you post it?

It wasn't a PM, it was a notification that he sent you a visitor message. Check there.
