Seriously, What do you do with your knives??

I'm a gear whore, plain and simple. Knives are a biggie for me, but gear in general is something that makes my ears perk up. Bags, Guns, Flashlights, Fire starters, the list goes on.
Sometimes, the wife thinks about trying to talk me out of the next knife, but she knows that by the time my eyes glaze over, and I start drooling and mumbling incoherently, it is already to late.

Out of curiosity, is there a term used for someone who has an addiction to sharp objects/blades???

So much of my purchasing has been chasing the 'ideal' loadout. I just can't bring myself to get rid of all the stuff I've accumulated up to this point. Most of my gear has been fairly well used, it all just tends to get bumped from the rotation earlier than they really need to.

i have a modest stash. i have maybe 10-15 traditional slipjoints, one good quality modern folder, and 2 fix blades. the set up i have is...
90% of the time i edc my spyderco, carry a traditional when a modern knife would be uncomfortable or be awkward, and use my izula as a dedicated garden knife because i hate cleaning the gritty dirt from the pivot on a folder.

oh and i got a few mutitools for fixing or destroying shit.

The best way I've found to determine what my pack loadout should be is reverse engineer the whole concept. Instead of trying to anticipate what you will need or what scenarios will have to be done simply carry everything you think you want out there, then take detailed notes of what you used. Do this for about 30 days of being in the field and you will know quickly want to take off the team and what stays.

Most of my knives are larger, and I like to baton/chop with them as much as I can. I also use them in the kitchen, and at work. There are certain knives that get used much more then the others, but if I don't use a knife, I don't want it. It would be useless to me.

last year I sold a bunch of knives that hadn't seen the light of day for close on to 20 years -- then bought a bunch of new ones and some gear -- so I could try them out and see what I like.
Recently I picked up a couple of customs to see what the deal is with some of the makers on the forum.
Pretty soon I'll be selling more stuff to pay for different gear.

Once I get my load out set up just the way I like it, I'll keep buying, because "want" outweighs "do not actually need" more often than not. (and it's always good to check out new trends to see if they're actually more efficient)

I'm afraid I treat my knives like I do my guns. I can always justifiy buying a new one, but never see the need to get rid of any. :D

I'm an old fart (50) and have been buying knives since I was a kid. Never sold any and only lost one.

One of my proud moments as a father was when I was a Scout leader and we were doing the section on knives.

I decided to take my knife collection for show and tell. I had no idea how many I had until I started gathering them up in a duffle bag.

When layed out on display they completly covered the top of an 8 ft folding table.

I talked about each one, knife safety, etc.

After class while I was putting all my knives away I heard one of the kids tell my son that "He wished he had a cool Dad like his". :D:thumbup::thumbup::D

i think the question really is what can't you do with knives! i collect some, use and abuse some, and just fondle other in my collection.

Right now I'm at a good spot because I have one nice knife to carry all the time (Izula) and one nice knife for going outside and messing around (ESEE 6) so at this point I don't feel any urge to buy anymore knives. But, in a couple months, I'll get bored and decide I want something new.

I don't think I'll ever sell any of them because as soon as I get a knife I end up playing with it and that always leads to some kind of superficial damage.

Some aren't so lucky. :D

I admit I am just a gear whore. I love knives, always have since I was a boy. My collection has improved since "growing up", meaning I know more about what makes a good knife and I love have a bunch of them to play with.

Unfortunately, I'm selling them all at the moment. I've unloaded the majority of my slip joints. As much as it's killing me, keep your eyes open for a 3 and 6 possibly soon. This damn economy is killing my toy collection. Boat = gone, dirt bikes = gone, great slip joint collection = gone. Why the hell did I get into construction management again?

Some of it is collecting, but some of it is upgrading. I have quite a few folders just hanging around that I don't use any more.

No harm in buying a knife, deciding that another might be better, and just hanging on to the old one…

I just like playing with sharp things. :D

I use my knives for various things, but the larger ones only come out to play when i hit the trails.

sorry to hear the economy is forcing you to sell all your toys but those are all superfluous stuff anyway. the more i hike the more i realize i'm happier the less i have - running water, heat when i want it, etc. is so sweet when i come home from the woods. sometimes trying to keep up with what's the latest and greatest toys can be a job itself.

I only have 4-5 knives at a time. I usually use one for a few years tell it is descrepid, then pass it on to a less forunate friend or family member so I can get a new one. :D
