Seriously, What do you do with your knives??

I've sold or given away most of my knife collection in order to hone my outdoor system to what I use and prefer. I may get a new knife now and then but it's to narrow down further what I like in an outdoor blade.

All personal preference, of course. ;)

I have a several that I use for diffent occasions. My edc normal folder, my folder for when I was working in an office and had to wear dress pants. ESEE-3 in my edc pack. Small collection of folders I have received as gifts over the years. Right now they are waiting for a display case. Some I have picked up because I was interested in how I would or would not like them. Some I pick up for the unique design or feature.

I've been trying to figure out the same thing. I really have enough firearms and was getting tired of spending the amount required for one and then realized...what the hell am I doing?! I don't have any REAL knives. But that just started a couple months ago...I do intend to use them evenutally. I already have more than I really need. It just happened so fast. :D

With my ESEEs, the Izula is in my pocket (when legal to do so) for day to day stuff, the ESEE-4 goes on my belt when camping. I only recently became interested in what I would call "knife guy knives" and did a lot of thinking before settling on the two I have. I think I made a good decision, as I don't have a "strong" desire now to accumulate more and they fit my needs perfectly. Of course I do want more, because hey, knives are cool. There's just something to be said for appreciating a well made tool. At least it's a thing to collect that you can actually use. My other "collecting" hobby is pipes (tobacco). Same thing: I love their beauty, functionality, and appreciating the level of craftsmanship that has gone into them.

As far as other knives that I use regularly, a SAK stays in my back pocket at all times, and sometimes I carry an Opinel as well when the Izula is illegal (grrrr...). The SAK is mainly there for the corkscrew and bottle opener, LOL. Other than that, I don't have many knives, just a few that I don't use much and stay in various spots around the house, and older pocket knives that have sentimental value (gifts, inheirited, etc.).

sorry to hear the economy is forcing you to sell all your toys but those are all superfluous stuff anyway. the more i hike the more i realize i'm happier the less i have - running water, heat when i want it, etc. is so sweet when i come home from the woods. sometimes trying to keep up with what's the latest and greatest toys can be a job itself.

JV3 you just nailed my thoughts. The wife thinks I have lost my mind lately. I think I’d be just as happy (or happier) in a house about half the size, open floor plan on a few acres instead of a double lot in town (albeit a very small town). The things we work so hard for are pretty pathetic because it’s become “the norm”. I have a room in my house dedicated to a washer and dryer to clean the closet full of clothes I rarely wear most of. I have kitchen cabinets jammed full of enough pots and pans for a professional chef and use about 4 of them.

I commute to work and all the time hear "don't you hate that drive". Yes, but I also work to live, not the other way around. If there were work in the sticks, you wouldn't see me here. I try to enjoy part of life, I don't want my headstone to say "He Worked".

Sorry for the sidetrack OP.

Constantly buying knives to find what works and which I like best. Some are kept and put into rotation and for different uses, most are resold to buy others if not given away as presents. Most of mine are users. I think that's what they're intended for no matter how elaborate, artistic, or costly.

Also when I'm bored with firearms, or low on funds, I switch to and buy knives for a while.

My name is easy and I have a problem. :p Meh, it could be worse buying booze.

bought two 30 dollar shoe cubbies on Amazon to organize all my blades. Pretty much failproof for blades up to about 10 inches but it does take up alot of room. Other than hanging I haven't found a great way to organize my bigger blades and axes yet.

I use my izula daily at work.
My 5 stays in my truck in case I drive off a bridge and need to break my window to get out.
Camping/hiking/biking - 4 or 5

if i could handle knives first before i buy, i probably wouldn't own half of what i have now...and my taste is changing (i'm currently moving towards scandi knives) and i'm always searching for the most ergonomic knife for me. it's kind of a hassle though to sell knives so that's why i have more than i actually use now. i'd really like my collection to go down to just 5 or so (i'm the complete opposite of a pack rat) so maybe i'll sell the others as a group to minimize the selling hassle.

yep I've bought one or two over time and hated it when I actually used it..

The best way I've found to determine what my pack loadout should be is reverse engineer the whole concept. Instead of trying to anticipate what you will need or what scenarios will have to be done simply carry everything you think you want out there, then take detailed notes of what you used. Do this for about 30 days of being in the field and you will know quickly want to take off the team and what stays.

this is the ticket, I have a short term thing going lately so notes are most useful:thumbup:

Pretty soon I'll be selling more stuff to pay for different gear.

Once I get my load out set up just the way I like it, I'll keep buying, because "want" outweighs "do not actually need" more often than not. (and it's always good to check out new trends to see if they're actually more efficient)

Yep the ever evolving annual thinning of the herd.. think my turn is just around the corner again this year..

I'm afraid I treat my knives like I do my guns. I can always justifiy buying a new one, but never see the need to get rid of any. :D

I'm an old fart (50) and have been buying knives since I was a kid. Never sold any and only lost one.

One of my proud moments as a father was when I was a Scout leader and we were doing the section on knives.

I decided to take my knife collection for show and tell. I had no idea how many I had until I started gathering them up in a duffle bag.

When layed out on display they completly covered the top of an 8 ft folding table.

I talked about each one, knife safety, etc.

After class while I was putting all my knives away I heard one of the kids tell my son that "He wished he had a cool Dad like his". :D:thumbup::thumbup::D

Great story !!

as a musician we sometimes use the term 'less is more' and I've found it applies to every realm of life as well..

I use mine to build things,

To carve things,

To prepare food,

Lately to help me drink,

And self defense,

I wouldn't consider myself a collector. Every knife I own I use, if it doesn't get used or doesn't have a purpose it goes. Most of the time I won't even buy a knife or axe if I can't think of a reason for having it or a void that needs filled.

Lost Viking is that a Cold Steel Trail Hawk? If so, is that the standard length handle or is that one you put on yourself. If not a CS who is the maker?

Just did a rough inventory. Almost 100 knives.
Out of that I rotate about 20 of them , mostly Esees , Beckers , Kabars and Cold Steel.
My most used fixed are an Esee 3 , 4 and 6.
I use them for everything from opening mail to bushcraft use.
I never say I carry a knife for defensive purposes because that intent is illegal here :D:rolleyes:
Blade size has no limits though :D

I always said variety is the spice of life. I like to have different knives to suit me from day to day. I'll never know which knife I want to carry until I get up each day.

Seriously? Most of mine are sitting in the vault of a bank about 10 blocks from here. The rest are users.
