SG2 steel Red Flag!

It is funny you mention that it is marked XXX for being "slightly assymetric".
I recently gota 1725SG2 from a internet dealer, not marked XXX. The blade is so badly assymetric even a non-knifeaholic friend noticed it.
Matter of fact, I have 5 Kershaw knive, every one of them is noticably assymetric.
Black Boa
Random Task
Black Leek
Junk Yard Dog I
Junk Yard Dog II Ti/SG2
I have begun wondering if Kershaw knows hiow to make a symetric grind.
Also know I will not be purchasing another Kershaw anytime soon.

Can I have the ones you already own. :D

All my Kershaws are perfectly symmetric - can you post pictures of your assymetric knives? It is hard to believe that your 5 non marked XXX knives all assymetric. Also why do you keep buying those assymetric knives one after another - five in a row?

Thanks, Vassili.

The grinds on mine look pretty symmetrical - I am just really concerned about the thin hollow grind - I think I am going to see if I can get an extra regular Sandvik 13C26 blade just in case the origna lblade gets damaged - the tip is just SOOO thin.... Otherwise, the knife is fantastic, and I intend to do a pimping job pretty much the same as Jim Smyth did to his.

Sorry for your seemingly constant problems with our pocket cutlery.

I guess I would have to ask why you kept the 1725SG2 if it has an issue, or the others for that matter?

Tell you what, you package all 5 of those Kershaw's you have, put them to my attention, and Priority ship them off (no worries I'll even refund the shipping charges back to you). I'll personally inspect them, and replace them all with brand new knives (same day) that will hopefully meet your expectations.

Be sure to send them with a tracking #.

BTW, we do know how to make even grinds...promise.

Now I'm not entirely sure your general comments about our factories abilities were necessary, but I can understand your frustration.

...I am liking Kershaw and the folks working with them more and more...:thumbup:...( Thomas W. showing about 300 times more patience, restraint and understanding than I'm capable of...:p:eek: )

Patience/restraint are not my strong suit Darryl, just ask around. 300 times...man you must have a real hair trigger.:D

Have to keep the customer happy!

This pisses me off, and this was not the intent of my post... to start a f- bash fest. I just wanted to help others not screw up their blade through misuse like I did. Getting so you can't say anything on here. Anyone else need a break? OUT.

OE it's all good. Happy New Year!!!! Heck you just won 2 Kershaw's in the latest contest!!

You beat me to it, Thomas. I was going to tell him to send them to me and I would give him his money back. Always could use a few more. :)
As I mentioned earlier in this thread, my 1725SG2 is holding up perfectly, and I haven't babied a single one of the the knives I have gotten from Kershaw, what would be the point? They're for using.
Hope you had a good Christmas Thomas, Happy New Year and all the best in 2008 to you, your family, and your Kershaw family.

Rik

I have a brain like an elephant.
I knew I heard this story somewhere else before.

I have 4 Kershaws, and 3 of them have assymetric grinds. THe grind lines are not the same on both sides. I just live with it, figure no one else will notice. My Random Task is pretty noticable, the hollow is larger on one side than the other.

My black Boa is the same, the hollow is higher on one side than the other.
My black Leek is the same.

My Junk Yard Dog appears to be the first perfect Kershaw I ahve owned. Cannot detect any dis-similarities from either side.
Hopefully the 1725SG2 will be thw same.

OE, I just bought a SG2 JYD II and I thank you for the heads up. I know how fast things can go down hill in a thread. Take a breather, have a legal adult beverage and we'll see you tomorrow.

OE was definitely doing everyone a service by pointing out that he damaged his blade by using it in a way that it was not intended. The arguments and concerns people are voicing regarding the expense of the SG2 JYD and not being able to use it as a multipurpose tool are exactly why Kershaw tends to avoid very thin grinds in most of its regular production knives. You just can't count on the general public to use knives only as knives. The limited production SG2 version of this knife attempts to fulfill the desires (as I mentioned earlier) of the many darksiders here screaming to get a ultra fine, very hard edge for cutting/slicing. I think this knife definitely fulfills that desire.

The standard version of the JYD II has a more appropriate grind and steel for more all-around use (of course don't forget knives are still really meant for cutting). :D

I think HoB made these points quite succinctly.
I very much doubt that this has anything to do with the steel, but rather with the grind. And the grind was made so thin because the steel supports an edge this thin. Just goes to show: never use a slicer to chop and never use a chopper to slice. Nothing to do with the steel.

No surprise that the regular JYD held up fine. Nothing to do with the steel, it is ground differently (and from the pictures I've seen, significantly different).

In any case here's a pic of the edges of the SG2 and 13C26 JYD II's from the tip, to give you an idea of how big a difference there really is.

And before anyone asks, the blades are straight and the grinds are even, there is just a bit of distortion due to the proximity of the subjects to the lens.

Hope the pic helps.

thats an eye opener KD. yeah. i wouldnt want to use a knife that thin for chopping (OE, you already made the point of not using it properly. not saying anything bout that).

as for everyone else, these pics should say alot.

Can you post thickness of you blade at the failure point?

2 cbxer55

Can you post pictures of your uneven grinds?

Thanks, Vassili.

P.S. I understand that ThomasW rushing to make customers happy, but I really like to see those five unevenly ground blades.

and I'd guess they're ground thinner than the Ti JYD2. Same with my Byrd Cara Cara reprofiled flat to the primary bevel for an inclusive angle under 15 degrees before microbevel.

I am not so sure about that. The SG2 JYD is pretty thinly hollow ground. Especially further up the blade. Since the blade deforms, thickness behind the edge or edge angle is not the issue but rather complete profile of the blade.
