Eastern timber rattlers. Rock ledges and outcroppings are sunning spots and gathering spots around den sites, especially for pregnant females. I don't hunt snakes, but last month was the season (a week IIRC). The drunk hiker picked up a rattling snake, for a better picture, because he did not like the first one he took. I also have a stream nearish that is loaded with copperheads.

Rattlesnakes are scary! I saw yesterday a guy in California was bit so bad they had to give him 54 doses of antivenom. They had to fly him to another hospital because the first hospital only carried so much...

Our first quail of the season started hatching today.

My GF and I often run into this fine girl (the GF goes on the gentle adventures and no climbing, she's 5 foot) - she's and Eastern Rat and tends to stay along a certain stretch of trail. She's about 8 and a half foot and she's as thick as my forearm.

These are great to have around. Harmless to humans, natural rodent control.

Coturnix? I did that.....they are stupid. I don't mean pointless but they are just not smart. Had to mesh the top of the brooders cause they would break their necks jumping in excitement for food. And you can't hunt 'em. Great eating though.

NEPA

A black attacked a campsite in MT earlier this week IIRC (the ladies hadn't lifted the food in a bag, but kept it in their tent) - but TBH, I respect enough then enough that blacks aren't as scary as some of the ledges I prowl (timbers are common - a guy almost died a couple years back bc he was drunk and picked it up for a better picture - the EMTs who life-flighted him showed me his pre-adjustment picture they screen shotted off his phone. I am not creul, but I laughed).
What ?

Again please , ....in USA old school English .

DocJD DocJD he clarified that already.

Welp , I'm pathetically snake ignorant , as far as proper names of .

Around here , these (below pic) are just called Black Snakes . IDK if it's the same . Largest I've seen hereabouts . Showed up on 2nd floor balcony windowsill .

I allowed this big boy to go his own way in peace, initially , as is my habit with those who offer me no harm .

He rewarded me by destroying a nest of birds in the carport . Fly catchers , been around the house for many years . Almost pets .

I was PO'd , more than slightly . I found the big Black and punished his trespass . I clearly explained to him why .

He went his way , alive though bruised . We have not seen him again .

It's easy to get attached to such resident creatures. I appreciate the natural order and respect it to a degree. But yeah I am going to make some protective exceptions now and then when I can.

This is our resident flycatcher family . We've had many generations born here . They are very welcome ...except for the poop ! 😏

2014 July nest in carport . Years earlier , but same type birds .

Beautiful birds. I have a soft spot for Mockingbirds - have loved listening to their song outside the window late at night. Just beautiful.

In the south east, black snakes eat poisonous snakes. Although they can get very long.

The Black Snakes also eat rodents in an area , which makes it less attractive to poisonous types . Or so I believe .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I normally love to see Black Snakes on the property , especially around the house , barns etc . Never try to discourage them , as a rule .

There was something creepy about that Big One . A bad attitude. I tried to gently encourage him earlier to go away from the home / carport area .

He seemed unconcerned by my mild proddings and even a bit aggressive . I let him stay in the carport , hoping he'd wander off on his own .

Then he destroyed the Phoebe nest and chics . So , I deported him . Or her ? IDK . 🙄

Old pic , from the back porch , not a telephoto shot :

We have a lot of deer come down around the yard these days . Dogs are fenced now and I never did hunt the deer .

There's old fruit trees; and good browse at the transition of woods to yard .

We sing to them . Have for many years , they know our voices .

Your deer look very much like ours , but your squirrel has a different coat pattern and color , more camo .
we have grey squirrels too. they are smaller. like 1/3rd the size of the sherman fox squirrels. these are big boys. 20 to 30 inches long typically including tail. like a small house cat, but not as heavy. maybe 3 lbs or so. these are rare here. they are on a special concern list of species....due to massive habitat loss....aka development.....

We have so many squirrels here that I never paid them much special attention . I thinks mostly grays , but we are supposedly in Northern Fox range , so IDK .

Most interesting are the flying squirrels , we have in abundance. But they are mostly nocturnal , so not often observed in daylight .

Years ago we had a problem, with them coming down inside the wood stove chimneys and getting trapped in the wood stoves , not in use .

I heard something making noise in the basement wood stove, one day . Opened the door , and out popped Rocky the Flying Squirrel.

He (or she) bounced all around the basement , from walls to ceiling , at light speed . Easily eluding my lame capture attempts .

I just opened wide the only exit door and eventually Rocky found the way to freedom ! :p

Several others were not so lucky ,and died unnoticed in the stove ashes , before I knew about them . :(

I capped both chimneys , because we don't use them anymore , except for some emergency situation . Problem solved .

We have some very large Russian Mulberry trees , we planted long ago that attract much wildlife of all sorts .

They happen to be in an old , now unused , horse paddock , that I converted into a dog yard .

The dogs naturally go after anything that comes into their space . Sadly that includes flying squirrels . Such is life .

i get the flying squirrel issue......got my own story like that kinda......when i was a little boy...I was at my grandfather's house one summer. old place he built himself. anyways.....I didnt want to go upstairs to bed cause I heard something banging on the window in the stairwell. so im standing at top of the stairs and my momma is on the landing and she screaming at me that nothing is out there and to quit being a baby and go to bed......as this is happening a huge bat comes busting through the screen and flies right at me....course im a little boy and its dark and I cant see what it is....and im thinkin flyin monster......so i go running towards my momma and about knock her over and bats right on my tail and down the next set of stairs I go and I keep running....

course this bat flying towards me the whole way. I make it down the hall to my grandfathers room and before I can shut the door, in comes the big bat. hes half asleep in his bed. he pops up and gives me a look like this will be the last day ill ever see.....but then bat flies right into his face almost. he pops up and slaps on his jeans and goes right after that bat. up and down the hallway with a pillow case or something hes chasing it....finally catches it and lets it go outside. he looks at me and says go to bed, just a bat and quit being a baby. I sulk back upstairs past my momma who is still standing there on the landing and all she said to me was...dont ya dare say I told ya so.....get to bed.

ill never forget that.....
