Sharpener said my Spiderco Delica VG10 is cheap steel & hard to sharpen

After 7 pages we still have no clue whether the said knife is a fake or not. BTW, fakes do not automatically mean soft.
Hi Sharpedge,
Please hang on if you can. I have learned a Lot from all of your answers. I also see that as in so many complicated things as in
life that there is not always one set exact answer. I am waiting for a second response from Spyderco, will update when I get that.
Does anyone here have a Delica 4 / vg-10 that they can take a close look at ( with a loupe or a magnifying glass) because I notice that looking from the side you can barely if at all see the ridges of the jimping with the blade open and laying down ( is that normal ?? ) Fom the top of the knife its very obvious of course, .... also the G on the vg-10 engraving is squished-like and looks more like a figure 8 or something. and the V is narrow and almost like a Y

Depending on how you look at it, the stamp on mine also looks somewhat like "Y8 - 10", and the jimping is not very visible from the side view. Mine is very definitely real and I purchased it from regular US-based knife merchant at the standard price (it has been about 6 years since I bought it, I don't recall the vendor - either CutleryShoppe or Knifeworks).

I had a Spyderco Endura that appeared to have V8-10 stamped on the blade.

The older Delica 4's VG-10 stamps did look like 'V8-10'. Those were real Delicas. The stamps on the newer models have been updated and actually look like 'VG-10'.

I think yes he did 1 or two knives before and they were fairly sharp.
I dont think he is any great sharpening guy and will not use him again...
But keep this in mind out of like 20++ knife sharpeners here using a search in Yelp for "best knife sharpeners"
I went to the best one ( according to the results of that search) and they have some double wheel machine that
got things sharper, but I could feel roughness and burs and even said something like it needs more, finishing, then leather strop etc.
I dont think the guy knows much about that. I wish I had here in my city and old time guy that takes it through different
levels of grit, etc, strop at the end. Note I had two offers on here for sharpening and may take them up on that.

Go to a local high end Sushi restaurant (if one exists) and ask the sushi chef who sharpens his knives. You may be able to find a good local sharpener.

The Golden Diarrhea Dragon Japanese Chinese Thai fusion restaurant is not a high end Japanese restaurant.

Custom knife makers using a Sharpmaker? Gonna have to red flag that.

On a knife the edges are already set and with a Sharpmaker you are following that edge and maintaining it. It's snap to do.

Someone who says they're making knifes with it is either pulling your leg or worse.

If the blade was ground thinly enough it wouldn't be too bad. Something that's nearly zero ground would only take a few passes to sharpen from naught.

I bought this new and paid a lot for it thinking I had some great amazing lifetime knife.
I just bought a knife for ten dollars that is much sharper than this.
What kind of logic is that? A blade from a disposable razor will be sharp as hell. Same with an x-acto knife disposable blade. They are not "lifetime" blades. Sharpness has nothing to do with that. Plenty of knives that cost more than the 25 cents those cost will not be as sharp. Does that make them bad?

that is a very nice offer. I may do that, please pm your contact info. I found the best sharpener on yelp here in the city. I will try him first, after I upload a picture and see of its even a real spyderco delica ( im suspecting it is not or one of those guys may have ruined the edge)

First things first, make sure it's a real Spyderco. No sense having you waste postage sending it to me if I can't do much with it anyway.
I'm available. Feel free to message me, or throw up a smoke signal by posting on my profile page. I just got done sharpening my own Delica and it is shaving like a champ. The wife asked if I have mange...

I wouldn’t consider VG10 as dirt cheap either and I can’t imagine Sal Glesser openly announcing such a thing potentially harming his business and reputation. Not that I’m accusing Ganzofan of lying, more than likely he misinterpreted what he read.

It is FAR more likely that Sal said Ganzo knives are dirt cheap, but that's how this guy intrepreted it.

Didn't read every thread but first it may not be todays super steel ... but any professional sharpener that called it cheap junk was either drinking on the job or doesn't know his a** from a decent steel ...

and VG10 will an extremely good edge ... sharper than many and is very easy to sharpen.

just my 2 cents worth ...

You mean a pull through sharpener? Like a thing with a short handle and a wide slot where he pulled the blade between the two wheels?
Separately, I'm curious what metro area this is, if you don't mind.

Sounded to me like the sharpener was using a bench grinder or something similar. Do ya think careless sharpening could be causing the steel to overheat, ruining the heat treat and causing a “chippy” blade?

In my experience, a lot of local “knife sharpeners” (who mostly seem to do kitchen knives, scissors, etc.) are absolute hacks who have no idea what they’re doing. At least that’s just what I experienced in my neck of the woods.

I'm surprised that anyone who belongs to Bladeforums wants to hire a knife sharpener. You need to learn some basics that most knife owners know. Here is a video about cutting edges. Watch it, spend a few bucks on a Sharpmaker, and with a little practice you will be an expert knife sharpener producing a knife edge suitable for 99% of most knife cutting tasks. I'm hoping you will become an independent and self sufficient knife owner and great member of the forum. The fellow in the video started in the knife business by selling the Sharpmaker, transitioning into knife making after seeing and sharpening thousands of poorly made knives. His first knives were made for craftsman in the trades that used their knives every day. I hope you enjoy it and watch all four parts.

For sure anything is possible.

The way it was written it sure sounded like folks were trying to grind out blanks on one.
