Sharpest knife?

The two Spyderco ZDP-189 models I have, the Calypso Jr. and the Delica 4, have been the sharpest. The Delica is surprisingly sharp. I went to test it out on my forearm hair, and ended up taking off skin instead of hair. My cutting technique needs to be changed whenever I use that knife.

The san mai blade (VG-10 core, I think) in my Mcusta Katana folder was hands down the sharpest out of the box. First thing when I get a new knife, I try cutting a thin piece of paper to get a feel for the sharpness. When I tried the Mcusta, I let out an involuntary OMG -- and I have Spyderco's, Protech's, etc.

The 2nd sharpest is a tie between my Kershaw Nakamura (VG-10 clad with 420J2) and Spyderco Volpe (N690Co). The Nakamura seemed to be a little more precise, but the Volpe cut an old Sports Illustrated completely in half with a single uninterrupted stroke.

CRKT K.I.S.S. out of the box also caught the wispy hairs above skin level and sliced them clean off.
Spyderco any VG-10 again popped hairs without leaving a rash on my arm from pressure. Odd that so many of us knife nutz use our hairy appendages for judging the out of the box sharpness of any knife we buy.
I admit it. I try with each and every knife I have ever bought, even a flea market Kukari that I knew was dull as a 30 year old Axe head. Still lashed it across my arm to test. Being a half a century old you think I'd develop a better grading system by now.

Peace.

Spyderco Endura, vg-10; the S30v native was right there with it. M2 Ritter Grip was plenty sharp as well.

My Bradley Mayhem (s30v) was wicked sharp. Fallkniven A1 (vg-10) gets razor sharp and hold an edge very well

I will agree that it is likely spyderco
My vg10 models are sharp. My BG42 millie was unreal

My 2 Buck Custom 110 with BG-42 wins hands and pants down...:D

No competition at all.. they were ridiculously scary sharp, much more so than my spydie VG-10 and obviously tons more than my BM

My CRKT S-2 comes close to the 110 but still streets away... my 110 cuts news prints smoother than hot knife going thru butter.

When I first got it, I tested it in the usual way, by running my thumb perpendicular to the edge and it took enough skin off to cover the width of the blade.. scary scary sharp!!

I had a Spyderco Ronin that was the sharpest. It has that sharp pointy end that is just waiting for the opportunity to cut.

Sharpest VG-10 Spyderco out of the box...Karambit hands down.

A real surprise for being able to take a hair splitting edge. G. Sakai Clutchlock...AUS-6 I think.

Exactly the same. Especially the BG-42 Millie, and Perrin Street Beat.

In addition the sharpest one is Calypso jr, in ZDP-189.

But, very sharp are also Salt 1 with H-1 steel, and BM 710 with M2.

CRKT can get real sharp, if you're lucky. cos of the polished edge. but use it for awhile, and Spydercos beat the shit outa them. Spyderco edges are "crispy" - they're real sharp but not polished. they'll shave / pop hairs, but they'll also cut wet rope or layers of cloth easily. try that with a polished edge....it won't work.

my sharpest knives outa the box has always been Spydercos, whether VG10, BG42 (yes, I agree that was SHARP), ZDP189 or S30V.

but the sharpest ever so far has been a zero ground Emerson followed by Bob Dozier's edge (and they were both "crispy" edges, not polished).

cabon steel mora. these things can be made amazingly sharp. I also just sharpened up an O1 steel knife I made and was amazed at how sharp I could get it.

My sharpest is a SE Dodo closely followed by my good ole' carbon steel Mora.

A truly SCARY sharp blade I had was a Fehrman ....the hair fell off before the blade even got to them!!! I have had many that shave hair, but that blade was SCARY!!

For sharpness out of the box
1) Spyderco
2) Buck
3) CRKT
4) Victorinox

(In the 1980's Case was #1 in my opinion, but now no longer even in the running.)

Just my 2 cents
