Shave of the day?

4 days growth
Hot shower
Williams mug soap with cheap ebay boar brush
Red personna on third shave
Merkur Futur on second setting
3 passes
2 applications of Musgo real.

Not a bad shave considering I rushed it but I did nick myself a few times. Probably time to ditch this blade it's almost a couple of weeks old.

Excellent tube for holding shaving-sticks! Very nice design indeed, also that open comb catches my eye. Really tasteful set-up.

No shave today, letting the targets get bigger.

Thanks Buddy, that's my "Keep It Simple" set-up.

Its been awhile since I posted here, simply because I have been limited with what I have to shave with so every shave has been basically the same. Well today I tried something just a little different.
Soap: Poraso Green
Brush: Lee Valley Badger knot in custom travel handle
Razor: !949 Gillette Rocket
Blade; IP Red
Aftershave: Old Spice Clasic

The difference is the AS. I have never used a splash AS, I have always used a balm. The shave was average at best, but the aftershave was a wake up for me. I was expecting a little bit of a bite because of the alcohol based splash and it did have some. The wake up was more the flood of old memories of my father and grandfathers. While I may not make the Old Spice a daily user because I like the soothing feel I get from the balms, it is a nice change from the norm and its fun to stroll down memory lane from time to time.

Now its out to try and find that New Standard razor at some of the local shops out here.

2 days beard:
dovo straight razor with ebenholz (ebony) scales.
bond street cream
thiers issard badger brush
latigo strop, about 30 runs pre strop ( I tend to do more these days, it really helps. I was in a rush today)
2 passes to get it pretty smooth
proraso after shave cream
30 after shave strop runs

Catching up a little here...

I really need to get my shaving stuff here, along with my tripod so I can start posting pictures as well. And do you really have to keep teasing me with that New Standard:p

What can I say, it's my favorite razor. I said over on another forum that I was going to have to start using my "non-favorites" just to add a little variety to my photos...:p:D

I won't even mention that I just picked up another one, the Bostonian in my last picture, same razor but in a neat little silver box.

Arrggg yet again with the New Standard, and all this time I have been stuck with my single ring and 40s Rocket:grumpy: but tomorrow that changes I just got a nice little Red Tip in the mail this afternoon:D

Pre shave: long hot shower
Blade: Israeli Persona Red
Soap: Proraso green
Brush: Lee Valley Badger knot custom travel handle
Razor: A4 Gillette Red Tip
Post shave: Musgo Real Aftershave Balm

After getting confirmation yesterday that my belongings were finally being delivered, I spent the day cleaning the garage so I would have room for everything and a place to set up my grinder and other tools. The garage was a mess BTW because my mother's house had the roof let go so while they basically replaced the front side of her house due to water damage and mold, they put everything in the garage and never sent anyone to put things back, my mother is 70 years old, diabetic, and still works so she never got the chance to move anything back.

By the time I finished it was pushing 6:30 pm, and I was tired and my elbows were killing me. After a long hot shower I mixed up some proraso loaded a blade in the Red Tip and dove in. While not as aggressive as my Aristocrat, or any of my open comb razors the heft of the Red Tip is noticeable right from the time you pick it up. I don't have my scales here yet but the Red Tip is listed as being 65g. In comparison the EJ89L comes in at 63g and has a much longer handle.

I did a 3 pass shave and things were going great till right at the end of the third pass, due to my being tired I let my angle get off under the nose and the blade dug in just ever so slightly. I could see a bit of curled up skin, but amazingly almost no blood. I gave my face a good rinse took care of the nick and put on the musgo. for the first time ever I got a little bit of bite from the balm:confused:. It woke me up enough to realize that I had managed to get a bit of a sunburn on my face.

End Result a DFS with only the mentioned nick and no irritation even with the light sunburn.

Verdict on the razor, its a keeper for sure:thumbup:

Hot flannels on face etc.

Merkur 38 Barber pole

Vulfix Badger

New Feather

Used a new cream that just arrived. CELLA olio di Mandorla Almond oil. Smells very good indeed, the 150g tub is much more compact than the equivalent Taylor of Old Bond St, a denser substance I thought. Encountered problems with it: seems like a cross between soap and cream-although it says 'crema' on the tub. Lathered poorly and I live in a soft water area, razor did not perform well at all, lot of dragging and drying out.Dismayed by this, washed it off and whipped up some Taylor's Eton College. Totally different results, smooth ultra close shave without any nicks or problems.

I must be doing something wrong, this Cella probably needs more water and I will persist with it as it as a good scent. I still find English creams to be the best, Proraso from Italy is extremely good but I'm not fond of the smell too much. Taylor creams are outstanding performers from my experience better than the much hyped and vastly expensive Castle Forbes, Vulfix Lime is a strong citrus cream that also works superbly, very strong citrus scent though, zing!

Finished with L'Ocittane Baux a nice balm. Quite an international array: Japanese blade, German razor, English brush, Italian cream then English, French balm!

Thanks Mark.
Interesting, useful links and a fair bit of healthy controversy too.
I'm certainly going to try out a modified approach, the Cella smells excellent and I'm sure will deliver.

Cella, the soap you eat with a spoon.
Disclaimer: Don't eat Cella, it's soap.

I have no doubt you will find success with Cella!

(I don't exactly use any of the methods in those threads either, but I just wanted to show you that Cella and the other Italian soaps do work. ;))

PS- If you like Cella, try Valobra and Razorock. I have been rotating the 3 of them lately and I love them all. I even really enjoy the Valobra Menthol. While I am not a menthol fan at all, the Valobra Menthol has such a subtle hint of menthol that, to me, it is just sublime and a real treat.
