Shave of the day?

When I was still using cartridges, I once got an 8 pack of Bics. The first time I used one, I got nicks and cuts all over my face, even on the flat sideburn areas, and this is all with the grain. Thinking it was a fluke, I tossed that one and tried a second razor. Same thing.

So I just cut my losses and dumped the rest. Cartridge is bad in general, but Bic is definitely the worst of the worst.

PS: It's really easy to say that you're happy with what you have if you've never tried anything else before. If you don't know what you're missing... why would you ever be dissatisfied?

Here's a European slant on the cost aspect of cartridge chuckaway v DE blades

This evening in a discount shop a packet of FIVE Mach 3 is 17.95 Euro or 3.60 euro per blade.

I can buy SIXTY Feather blades with postage costs from Poland to Finland for 33.50 Euro or 0.56 Euro per blade! Mach 3 won't last longer than a Feather and Feather are the most expensive DE blade by a long chalk, but the Mach 3 is six times more expensive. That's no small difference I feel. No cartridge can cut like a Feather (at least if it's your face you want to shave...)

I've been a little under-the-weather these past 2 weeks so this picture is a perfect symbol of how I've felt...

I brought my Solingen strait (stainless scales) to Afghanistan with me along with a travel badger brush, a boar (my favorite), three Belgium cuticle traveling wet stones (small, for honing), and my kangaroo hide strop. So far the blade has been working great. Just need to take the time to maintain it.

Very nice. I'd love to see a picture of it.

Preparation: Hot shower
Lather: DR Harris Arlington hard soap
Brush: Merkur Futur-style
Razor: Merkur Futur (f/3.5)
Blade: Feather
Aftershave: Cold water rinse and alcohol splash

Two things are significant which cause me to make a new report.

First, this was my 90th shave on this cake of D.R. Harris soap. Ninety shaves... and my weight measurements and visual observation predict that there are 30 more in the bowl to go. So, I'm expecting 120 shaves from this one cake of soap. I want to emphasize too that I am not doing anything miserly with the soap. No. I'm getting a good lather and a great shave.

Second, several weeks ago, I opened my Futur up to f/3.5. That may seem like a small change, but keep in mind that on most adjustable razors, the adjustment changes the gap between the bar and the edge. On some razors, it changes the angle of the blade. On the Futur, it changes both simultaneously, so the Futur gets aggressive fast. I have now used f/3.5 with Bic, Feather, Derby, Dorco, and Merkur blades with no problems at all.

Boy... tough beard if you have to use a pistol. And be careful with that. If you goof with a razor, the cut will heal. If you goof with the pistol, you may need more than a dab of stipic.

I guess this is a whole new twist on cartridge shaving.

LOL Good one
