Shave of the day?

Nice Swaty. Very nice.

Thanks. I found one that had been kept in a custom made wooden box, the thing is immaculate. Hard to believe it's over 100 years old...

...

I also broke down and bought a New Improved today after close to a year of trying to find one in the wild. In a couple of weeks I wont have to feel razor envy of Mark's every time he shaves with it. I may have paid a bit too much for it, but after looking for as long as I did and not finding one in the wild the price was worth it to me.

Woo-hoo! Christmas came early for you!
Looking forward to seeing some pics and hearing what you think.

Preparation: Luke-warm shower
Lather: The Gentlemen's Quarter hard soap, Lime Margarita
Brush: Merkur Futur-style
Razor: Merkur Futur (f/3.5)
Blade: Feather
Aftershave: Cold water rinse and alcohol splash
LOCATION: Approximately the California/Oregon Border aboard the Coast Starlight ex San Diego en route to Portland
SPEED: 55MPH

I decided to use up the last of my TGQ soap since it is no longer needed as the "gold standard." I threw it into my travel bowl and took it with me to San Diego for the Art Knife Invitational show.

I decided to add some extra interest to my AKI trip this time by making my way back to Portland aboard the fabled Amtrak Coast Starlight... sleeper service... parlor car... diner car... observation car... I loved it. It was so relaxing. The scenery was just spectacular. You start out with the pacific ocean seemingly within arm's reach outside your window. You climb to over 4250 feet through the Cascades... 1300 miles to sit back and enjoy.

Alaska Airlines, famous for their on-time performance, got me to San Diego about 2 1/2 hours late. Amtrak, often synonymous with late, got me back to Portland a full 1/2 hour early... and I felt cheated in both cases.

And so it was that this morning I set out to shave in a dimly-lit bathroom smaller than a typical phone booth (for those of you who can remember phone booths) aboard a moving train at 55MPH.

The result? A perfect shave.

It's not something I would recommend for someone who is not experienced and steady-handed with his razor. The train tried to cut me several times. But I prevailed and then presented myself in the diner for a delightful breakfast.

This picture is not up to standards for which this thread as become famous. I'm sorry for that. But, that bathroom was poorly-lit, the train was moving, and the iPhone isn't the greatest camera.

Oh, and you will be happy to know that Amtrak is DE-Friendly. Aside from the fact that you can bring your DE razor and blades aboard with you, the bathroom have convenient blade disposal slots... handy for me since this was the fourth and final shave for this blade.

Hi,

My shave today.

Hot shower face prep
My trusty Gillette Slim
Crystal Blade
Still using the VDH Boar Brush, (I got to get an Omega, come on Christmas! ;))
C.O. Bigelow Creme (first use)
Vintage Old Spice After Shave

I have to say the Bigelow creme was kind of fun. The menthol and eucalyptus oils were fun on the face and the scent was refreshing. The shave was good, but I think I prefer a soap over the creme. Still, I can see keeping a small tube on hand for the change up.

I've got an acrylic handle but it badly needs a new knot, any places I can buy one?

Nice to see American railways still have slots for disposing of DE blades! Long time since I've taken a sleeper or long distance train. It is relaxing though.

This afternoon: Hot shower and flannel treatment. New Feather, the previous had done 5 and that's it with them, starting to pull and drag, uh-uh.
Omega Boar, Merkur 39 Barber Pole , Taylor of Old Bond St. Almond cream. Nivea After Balm. Result? Very good indeed, can almost face the coming week...

My thanks again to Mark and Jack for their formidable photography, must take a long time to set it all up! Much appreciated gents.

It really takes me no time at all. After my shave, all the stuff is out anyway so I just grab my camera and shoot. I am glad you enjoy the shots, that's why I take them. ;) :)

I have purchased several replacement knots from http://thegoldennib.com/.
