Shirogorov Neon ultra lite arrived and I'm a little annoyed...

bad link, try doing it when you're on the product info page, then copy what's up top from the address bar :)

Keep an eye out for Koenig! Love the Arias and fit and finish is on par with shiro. Have one and a 95T and do like the 95T a little better but I should at 2x the price but it’s not $600 better.

Sorry about the huge pic I still havent figured out how to edit size.

nice WE :) but I just can't get into titanium on 1 side and g10 on the other side... why do they insist on these designs? am I the only person who dislikes them?

I do have some issue with it but generally I'm ok with it I love my Lil Lionspy which is a half Titanium half G10 scales. I would prefer all G10 with liner or G10 inlays but as long as the knife still looks good and functions well I can't really complain.

I am not a fan of the two different side materials. I think I own one knife like that.

Anyway, curious to hear what the OP says about the WE.

When it arrives I will definitely post my Impressions.

You guys all have to remember that I'm completely new to this higher end knife thing, so my tastes may rapidly evolve.

At the moment I actually do like/prefer the showside scales having some sort of mild traction, and the other side I am completely fine with being titanium, so much so that I expect the shiro hation, for my own personal preferences to be an improvement over the Neon.

I understand rapid taste evolution for sure. I had a lot of that once I got into this. Still do a bit. Usually I don't know something is "not for me" until I bought it. Occasionally I can figure that out before I buy, but mostly I learn the hard way.

I like traction as well. I just don't visually like the show side/lock side material difference.

If you like the detail work on the Neon Lite, wait till you see the internal milling on the Hation. The weight difference is pretty crazy.

Playing with this shirogorov this morning, I have not yet taken it out of the house in case I like the hation better and decide to keep only one because of the price, but subjectively, somehow this has the magic special secret ingredient that makes it feel 'much' better than anything else. Is it twice as nice as the ZT 0450c? Yes, to me it is.

Given the price the shirogorovs (bought the elmax neon ultra lite version for $750 ((Yes I know I overpaid a bit, but it was available there)) delivered from RusBlade), I'm likely to just keep one of them, probably the lighter carbon Hation (because I have a thing for ultra light, and I like textured carbon) and send it to Josh to shorten the blade to an everywhere legal 2.95" and give it a professional wicked mirror edge from the start :). Then I will sell the other here on the forum. I don't know yet which I would keep. Yes the Hation will be lighter, but honestly, at 2.93 oz on my super accurate scale, the ultra lite neon feels damn near perfect in balance and it feels light enough, it certainly does not 'need' to be lighter, and maybe would not even benefit from being lighter. They really nailed it with this design.

I will also keep something else like the we 803 and zt 0450c for taking places I am more likely to loose it (fishing etc.) because they too are really nice, just not as nice.

The We Blade Company "rectifier" 803 arrived today. It has a lot of potential, but is just not quite there yet. Fits well in the hand, g10 grips not too grippy but just right. The fit and finish are pretty good.
I am not going to keep it because neither I nor my wife could get it to flip reliably. There is just a bit too much resistance for the lightweight blade. It just does not inspire confidence. Also, the flipper tab is a bit excessively "pocket peckery." I think the flipper tab needs to be as long as it is because it needs the torque and leverage to flip the blade given the light weight and a bit too much resistance of the bearing system. Fortunately I bought it from BladeHQ which has an excellent return policy and excellent customer service.

After having the Shirogorov and the ZT, I know I do not have to settle for a flipper that does not inspire 100% confidence as the ZT and Shiro both do.

So, instead, I am going to just have the blade of the ZT 0450c cut down to slightly less than 3" and make that my going into the bushes camping/fishing/ more likely to loose it knife. I'll use one of the Shirogorovs for most of my daily uses.

So it is decided:
The ZT 0450 carbon cut down to just under 3"
And
The Shirogorov either neon ultra lite or Hation cut down to just under 3" for most days use as my EDC

I'm still waiting for the Hation lite to arrive from Russia. Then I plan on deciding which to keep, then I'll be sending one to Josh at Razor edge knives to re grind it to look like this photo. It is not that large of a change. We will just shorten it just over 1/4" so the local PD can't decide they would rather have my knife in their collection.

Please remember that the hation lite and neon lite blade are full flat grinds, so it will look less different than the knife in the below photo (which is not a simple full flat gind.)

It is just a piece of steel. It is not like this is a one of a kind work of art. These are production pieces. I intend to use this as my daily edc. I hardly think shortening the blade 3/16" qualifies as destroying it.

I collect watches too. I remember calling Patek and asking what they would charge to swap a certain set of gen hands from an gen ultra thin Patek to another gen ultra thin Patek and it seemed like the question was so blasphemous to the person on the phone that she would go have to take a shower after hearing such a question. hah. As if the watches still belonged to the designer after they were sold, and again, production pieces, not one of a kinds.

I look at it this way. My money, my item, production piece, therefore I can try whatever I like. It doesn't matter to me that this mod might make it unsellable again as I plan on using it as an EDC tool.

Tastefully (or not) removing ~1/4" of blade is not going to stop someone from confiscating/stealing your knife. This is CA, not NYC or London, you can have a 3.25" folder in your pocket.

Not true in Berkeley, not in Alameda, not in Oakland, Fremont, etc. In each of these cities there is an ordinance against any 3 inch or longer folder blade and they potentially can take it, even if it is only to add to his own private collection.

In these cities, which I visit, Three sixteenths of an inch is the difference between being in compliance with the law versus being afoul of the law, with all the consequences potentially attached.

If the blade is less than 3 inch though, they will have to deal with following the law, and my brother is an ex local Chief of Police, so I would be able to navigate getting my knife back and causing some serious grief or whoever stole it from me. Wearing a badge or not.

Completely serious question: Are folks really concerned with getting knives confiscated by the police?

I mean, A: You'd have to do something or be in a situation where the knife would be noticed, B: In a traffic stop you are not getting patted down, gernerally, or even asked to get out of your vehicle, C: If you are getting patted down or asked out of your car, you probably have bigger problems. I just never understand the seemingly very real concern some folks have over the size of folders. I've lived in CA for 14 years and had exactly one encounter with the police.

Just curious. I live in VA so we can carry pretty much any length folder, outside of a few places.

I guess I would just not grind down a Shiro on the very very off chance I am in a situation in a couple cities/counties and end up having to deal with law enforcement.
