Short Story

Am I the only one who doesn't care about the coating wearing off?

Last week I got a new RC3 and a new Izula on the same day, and can't wait to get them scuffed up...Same goes for the RC-4 I've got coming soon:thumbup:

I once sent a knife in for a blade replacement to another great company here on Blade forums and they sent me a brand new knife instead of just fixing my old knife. I broke the tip and offered to pay for it but they went ahead and replaced it any way under warranty! I was very happy with their great service, but I kinda liked the well worn look of my old knife. It was a user and I didn't mind the scratches and wear marks. Hell the knife earned them! Oh well cant complain about a new knife, Its just a tool that I cant live without.

This is also why I will buy my fixed blade knives from Rat Cutlery for their good honest attitude and great warranty.
I'd even be interested in a folder if there is ever a Rat folder produced.
You can call it the RC-F1. :)

I learned a lot on this thread and I have never been happier to own a RAT. I'll be buying more in the future.

NO! You are among the 50 that don't, and not on the side of the the one who does. Have you read this post? ;)

I just want to know if I beat the crap out of it maybe even put a chip in the spine or blade and wear the finish off, if Rat will make it like new again. Or do I have to break it? I think of Strider, well everyone calls it "the spa" and Busse pretty much gave my SJT a spa treatment. I just want a clear answer. Will Rat or Rowen or whoever FIX not replace a well used knife? I wont send it in on a whim but if I break a slab of micarta I will want it replaced...

You want a CLEAR answer? Then the answer is NO! I could just tell you yes like we do with most folks but that would generate another 500 nit-picky questions from you. So, I would rather you just go away mad and tell everyone our warranty is useless than have to answer another round of questioning. Jesus Christ, dude what are you expecting for less than a 100 bucks? A pristine knife every time you decide you want your knife to look new again? You want me to come up and use the knife for you also? How about I go camping with you and help you set up your tent and when we get finished I'll make sure all the dirt is cleaned off and stored away neatly wherever you tell me you want it stored? Need your car washed? How about allowing me to paint your house for you? :D :D

In all seriousness, if you will send me your knife back I will give you your money back + 10 percent if you will promise me you will never buy another RAT Cutlery product again. We will then take your knife and give it away to someone who uses a knife and understands that our knives are made to be used, not to be be kept pristine.

Sorry about editing within your last post, I meant to quote your post and screwed up, but then again what do you expect from some idiot who's warranty sucks on their knife :D

I think it's important to remember that knives get scratched and messed up. That is after all the NATURE of things. As this doofus said once before...

My favorite post ever...

Leave nature alone.

...or maybe he'd rather dazzle us with an argument of how much longer lasting farm raised knives are?

I dont think you would want it back. I've used the shit out of it already. A real tough knife I might add. Put it through some real hard core knots and not a chip or dent in the blade. I could care less about the finish, my orignial question was more along the lines of If I sent it in for handle repairs or whatever would it be re finished to the best of Rowens abilitys. I wasnt demanding it be refinished just wondering if they would do like what Busse did.

The knife was not under 100 bucks, it was a fair price for this tough little beast though.

Fair enough. And as we have always said, use the knife and if you tear it up or break it (including the handles since they are part of the knife) then we will replace it - no questions asked. Our warranty is pretty clear: You break it, we repair or replace it. We didn't hire a lawyer to write it and tried to make it pretty simple so anyone could read and understand it. Sure we could have put every potential thing that could happen and the warranty would have been two pages long and a boring read and waste of bandwidth. We have never turned anyone down on any type of warranty work. Our name pretty much speaks for itself.

I was already sold on Rat before and after reading through this madness, am even more so. I have the TAK and my wife has the RC 3 ordered for her 72 hr kit. I disagree completely concerning the knife destruction testing. I believe it to be worthwhile, for instance I would want to know before I paid more than 250$ for a Reeve "survival" blade that under normal use it freaking broke in half. The RC4 did not fail until much later at less than half the price. I like to know things that could save me and my family hard earned money. I purchase things to use and if SHTF it is important to know that what I trust with my life and the lives of my family will hold up under hard to extreme situations. I have faith that Rat designed and Rowen manufactured products will. I'll dismount the soapbox now.

sal paradise,

We don't claim to make the best, toughest or prettiest knife in the world, because it's a purely subjective statement. We DO CLAIM a warranty and customer service second to none. And there are others who do the same thing and we praise them for it. Busse is an example of this.

I agree with your post and we want to make sure that any customer of ours is getting not only a quality product, but also their money's worth. In each knife we sell there is a part of our integrity built into that knife. It is VERY important to us that the knife performs to the level of the integrity that made it.

Again, RAT Cutlery has the best customers in the world.

Good Lord what a pile of hypothetical crap!

Jeff you have much more patience than I have when dealing with folks.

For my two cents I thank you for producing a great quality product at a great price and then backing it up mwith a tremendous warranty, which you keep with integrity.

I purchase knives to be USED. I couldn't care less if they stay pretty. I dont own and never will own a safe queen. Hell I'd have to buy a safe first.

Keep up the good work.

This thread is an exercise in futility. :D

Hammers, shovels, pliers, pry bars...we expect these tools to get scuffed up with use. So why must knives stay pristine?

I have a small handful of knives that I may select from if I require a knife for dress occasions. The rest of my knives are expected to handle anything I may need them for. I don't abuse them and use them in accordance with their designs, but I'm not going to be at all upset if they develop a bit of character as a result. ;)

ROFL! If a company offers me money so as not to get my business, then there must be something terribly wrong with myself! I haven't saved enough money yet to buy a RAT, but I'm VERY tempted to buy one if I get a chance in future!

Great thread, if only to show the business ethics of a great company...

See, everything comes back to how great the RAT people are in general, and how not-so-great some people can be when they know absolutely nothing about the product at hand.

And I didn't find it, sadly. We got 4" of snow today as well, so it was nearly impossible to look today.

Oh well, all is well that ends well.

you have me sold! ive been browsing around the forum tring to find my next knife and just based on what you said you have a new customer! when my tax return comes in im getting a RAT(from RC)! its custom knife service from a non custom manufacture...now the question is what should i get? RC3 or RC4 or maybe ill go for the big dog and get the RC6

Jeff, your "CLEAR" answer was great. I couldn't stop laughing. I already have three, plus one LEO version on order, RAT knives. Even if I wasn't already impressed with your knives and customer service, I would order another just from reading that.
