SHOT Show 2015

The Apex "borrows" heavily from the French Baladeo knife, made popular by mountaineer Conrad Anker.

Which video has the Selkirk?

The Compadres look better in video than static images. Wish the knife was flat or scandi ground though.

The video on the tacticals. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pAuYYY8l_ms

Okay, saw the handle on the Selkirk in the video and I'm in for one. Looks like one of the most comfortable outdoors knives on the market right now with that beautifully rounded micarta. The steel snob in me wishes for something a bit nicer than 420HC, but I can live with that.

I can't seem to find the video that shows the Selkirk?

It is lumped in with the tactical models @11:50 into the video:

Thanks Oregon. I like the looks of that even more now!

Yup. Catalog pages left me completely unimpressed, seeing it in someone's hand made a huge difference. There are far too many knives with ergos that make little sense for any kind of extended use, this one looks like something I could lean on all day with nary a blister. The more I use knives the more important the handle seems to me and I'll tolerate the steel to get a really good handle.

My pleasure. I love this stuff.

Leather stacked handle 119! :)

Here you go BCCL:

Here is Blade HQ's video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?list=UUZIIkzJ6XQiNeJkha6Ais5g&v=ltGdVXiNjqI

At the end of the video is an imported flipper that was not in the previous videos on this thread.

Terrific work rev. Thanks a million for your work on this outstanding thread. You are all right.

One more interesting video with good conversation is here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=z88f2Hq4V5I

At the end of the video the Buck rep mentions that there are over 30 new Buck offerings in 2015. Perhaps we have not seen them all yet. Looking forward to getting my 2015 Catalog from BCCI.

My personal reflections after this week of SHOT Show Buck videos for 2015:

- I will probably get the boot knife, although the MSRP seems slightly high ($120). Been waiting for this knife from Buck.

- I will buy none of the imports.

- I will not purchase the two new assisted openers. Personally, I don't like the size of the Pocket clip--too wide (cf. Vantage). I also have not missed the lock on the spine that was on the Rush as well. Even though it now fully disappears when the blade is open, it's still a manual process and adds a step. I was hoping that this safety on the spine would go away for good.

- I will not buy the auto. Again, my personal taste is not in line with its pocket clip. And for the MSRP of $200, I would likely move to a more experienced USA automatic manufacturer like Benchmade. Don't get me wrong...I'm foremost a USA-made Buck guy. I just appreciate Benchmade too. Interestingly, Kershaw broke into the auto scene this year at SHOT too. But I'll still stick with USA.

- I do hope that there may still be a few surprises in the 300 Series in the 2015 catalog. New handle material options?

- After seeing most of the new 2015 offerings, I have decided to order the 2014 Vantage Pro with G-10 inserts. It will be my ninth in my Vantage collection. I was holding off on it until I saw the 2015 offerings. For now, I desire it more than any of the new folders.

Just my personal opinion. Knives are like music--you like what you like. ;)

Long live our hobby.

Or is it an obsession?

Im really digging this years lineup. I think Buck has stepped up their game without forgetting who they are. Great Job BUCK !!

These are cool... As a game changer for the fishing line, the Splizzors have been reinvented to include a saltwater version. The multi-function 031 Saltwater Splizzors conveniently combine the use of scissors and pliers to create a versatile tool designed for any fishing task. Upgraded blade steel and the Cerakote™ coating add additional corrosion resistance benefits...

I've always wanted hand tools that cannot and will not rust. H1 is the only stainless steel that doesn't rust AFAIK. The bottom of my Father's aluminum tackle box was often coated in rust after Alsea Bay fishing trips and had to be cleaned and the tools oiled. It would be terrific to have a tackle box that could ship saltwater without rust developing on something/everything.

In the video Buck says that they poured acid on these as a test. I wonder if they put them in a bucket of saltwater for a month or two? The Sandvik replaceable cutting edge is exactly what steel? Is it absolutely rust proof? What is the screw that holds them in place made of I wonder? They sure look the business.

The Selkirk is imported.

Buck's website statement: "
Named after the rugged Selkirk Mountain range beginning in the Northern Panhandle of Idaho, the 863 Selkirk is a midsized survival knife with added features to help maximize survival in rugged and tough conditions. In addition to the 420HC steel blade, the Selkirk features a Micarta handle with steel bolsters (rear bolster can be used as an improvised hammer), and a heavy duty belt sheath that can be configured for horizontal or vertical carry. Included with the sheath is a fire starter/whistle tool. MSRP: $85. Imported."

Sorry, does not say what country.

If you watch the video, it says "China" on the side opposite "Buck" 12:22 on the video above in this thread.

The sheath and the spider web kill it for me. I'd prefer a simple waffle checkering.

Well, Darn! still a lot of made in the U.S.A stuff coming out from Buck, plan on picking up several pieces from the 2015 knives coming out.

So far the Selkirk is the first thing jumping out to me. I can take a guess that it's intended to get into the market of the Gerber/Bear Grylls and Camillus/Les Stroud knives, which like them or not, have been real money makers for both companies. The Selkirk does address one common complaint I hear about those knives, by doing away with the gaudy colors.

Only thing I see that I am not sure about, is the hammer pommel have a cant to it and not being flat in line with the handle.

I've had a few knives that were like this, and when hammering tent stakes etc...they tended to want to glance off what ever you were hitting.
