Show me your custom camp knife/chopper.

Feedback....Ooooh yeah.
When I designed that,I was trying to use some of the influence from some
Phillippine pieces without directly copying......hopefully to come up with
a blade that would bite well, and a handle that would still be comfortable
and easy to control when the hand was tired..
I tested it on hemp rope, walnut saplings, and finally laid heavy into some
well seasoned Osage....

Roger, Thanks for the review...

Mine arrived and I have a slightly better pic of it now... its around 9 inches of A2, 3/16 thick. Very comfy micarta handles. Not too heavy but plenty of heft for any light chopping that needs doing. A very handy tool for around the garden or campsite from Scott Gossman.

Roger,

If I didn't mention it before, I really dig this knife, great work, Russ !!
I usually don't go for guardless big blades, exception being comp. cutters, bolster/choil area looks perfect.
Flitz'll fix it, not that it needs "fixed" if you ever decide to...:)
Thanks for the share.

Doug

Thanks for making such a terrific knife Russ.

Doug - I also generally prefer a guard on my knives just on principle. But I have now used this blade pretty extensively - in the cold with a gloved hand, and in soupy humid heat with sweaty hands. The handle design is really superb in terms of blade retention and orientation. And it is generous enough in length that even with my large-ish hands, my index finger sits just back of the Damascus spacer/bolster/ferrule/notsurewhatyoucall it - which acts as sort of a warning track before you get to the integral blade bolster. And even moving past there, the smooth choil provides a natural buttress before reaching the actual danger zone of the cutting edge. But even in hard use, I rarely even get to the warning track. Very good design here. Thanks for the comments.

I think you'll be very happy with your purchase, congratulations! Scott is a very fine craftsman and a very nice guy. I was fortunate enough to meet he and his wife at this past Blade show. He had a table not far from ours and we basically had to stare at eachother for the whole weekend. On the final day Todd and I thought we'd better introduce ourselves. We walked over and were greeted with a warm smile and great conversation (neither of which I get from Todd usually:D) . Mr. Grossman puts out a great product and that particular knife really caught my eye.

On point, I'm still toting 'ol #1.

here is a pic of the knife i use i came up with the design and i had Brian breedan make it for me. i call it the B.A.S.K Backwoods Armageddon Survival Kleaver it is a 12 long by 3 wide blade with a 6 inch handle. to give you a idea of how big it is that is a breedan tracker on the bottom.

Here's my newest and prettiest, lol. This mini beast was made by Joe Calton and is one hell of a blade with good balance, weight and a very comfortable sized handle.

LOL, My Breeden cleaver is 2nd from the right in my group shot. Brian's prices are hard to beat and the convex edge he put on mine is the sharpest thing I've ever felt:eek: For exampl when I first got it I knocked it off my coffee table and it barely grazed my foot yet it went about 1/4" deep and 1-1/2" long and it severed something cuz for about a 1 inch diameter around the cut it has no feeling anymore, but I still love it:D

Largest Tusker I've made so far. One on the left has a 12" blade, 17" overall, 1/4" thick by 2" wide. The one on the right is a standard 8" blade Big Boar Tusker.
