Show off your Fiddlebacks and Leather

:D Please post pics of the Bushfinger in the new sheath when everything is done.

I will for sure... Phil is working on something I am quite excited about!

Here is one I made for an Arete a while back:

Very nice! I miss working with leather. Suppose I am young enough to have hope of doing it again someday!

Look good newyork!

My Hunter finally got some pants. Heber leather with the firesteel from schmittie. Second Fiddleback I bought, second to last to get pants. Kephart is that last one that still needs some, and that's on my Christmas list :)

Does anyone make a Kephart specific sheath, or are they all generic for the bushcraft knives?

Also, how's the retention on those? I like the idea of not having a retainer strap, but I plan to edc with a dangler. Cannot have it falling out.

That reminds me, I've never used a dangler. Is that the way to go for edc in your opinion? Does your sheath pull up with the knife when you remove it? I ask because I'm trying to figure out the best choice for retention, comfort (like getting in and out of the truck), but also for convenience. I've never edc'd a fixed blade and want it to work. I'd hate to find that it's too much trouble. I'm pretty laid back though so I doubt it'll be a problem.

Sorry for all the questions. I want to buy once, not have to go through two (or more) to find a good fit.

Rick Lowe makes a nice Kephart sheath. I'm not sure if he does dangler attachments though. They have a medium strength retention. Not to hard where you have to really pull, but your blade's not going to fall out either.

In terms of a dangler sheath, they are very comfortable for getting in and out of the truck and not snagging. Heck just wearing it, to me is much more comfortable than a belt sheath. Out on hikes, my belt sheaths have a tendency to push the butt of my knife into my side on uneven sitting surfaces.

The more friction fit your knife is to your sheath, the more your sheath will rise when you pull it. I like my knives to fall into their dangler sheath and for the butt to stick out about an inch or so out of the sheath. When standing with my arms down, my knife rests in my dangler right by my palm. No reaching up or down for my blade, it's right there. If you have a pop in friction fit knife with a dangler sheath, you may need two hands to pull your knife or you'll be pulling your knife way up high near your collar, not too cool.

Great answers my friend.

So you find that a medium retention is the compromise between not falling out and ease of removal. That sounds right. I guess every sheath is going to fit a bit different, but I'll be on the lookout for a sheath that exposes about an inch of the handle.

This may be more of a question for the makers, but can you kind of loosen up the sheath somehow if it's a tight fit? I imagine a little water and the knife wrapped in plastic wrap would do it but that may be a bad idea.

I'll let you guys get back to the topic. Thanks again Joe.

Strig, one drawback to danglers, is some craftsman make the dangler attachment detachable with a screw or bolt. If you purchase one, you have to remember to tighten that screw/bolt every time you wear it. If your hiking a long distance, check it several times. My wife's bolt came loose and the whole sheath and knife hit the deck chipping her Doublemint G10 and scratching her sheath. It's a good thing we heard it fall. Had we been on a hike a not heard it... I don't want to think about that.
